Course Preview: UCI World Cup Round 2, Cairns

Apr 23, 2014 at 3:32
by Red Bull Bike

With the second round of the 2014 UCI World Cup just days away, we felt it was time to send our pet test pilot, Claudio Caluori, for a quick GoPro preview run. When racing gets underway, the Cairns track will be new to everyone. But will the world's fastest racers get away with some of the sketchy moments that Claudio manages to wrestle back into line?! We doubt it.

Be sure to keep in touch with all of Claudio's crazy goings on on Facebook and Twitter. Tune in to redbull.com/bike this Saturday 26 April to find out just who can tame the Cairns track once the riders start arriving into the finish arena.

"Hit the deck like an old lady on a cruise ship"

Nothing much else to say!
  • 14 0
Haha sounds like Claudio is just as scared of the Australian wildlife as I am!
  • 26 9
That DH course is about as flat as a deck on a cruise ship.
  • 18 5
apart from 2-3 sections that would be a blue, easy black run on most mountains.
  • 9 0
Hes brilliant, sounds like Marvin the Martian on hard drugs.
  • 15 0
"Where is Crocodile Dundee when you need him haaaaaaa"
Claudio the clown cracks me up every time!
  • 12 4
What he needs to do, is join the crew at Rampage and take a line... would love to hear his thoughts on that "course"!!!!
  • 1 0
I would love to hear that it would be brilliant.
  • 4 1
Pretty boring finish line , this is a rough ending to a tough race , everybody better save some gas for the end
  • 5 2
rode Cairns DH course on a hardtail in 1996 just weeks after the World Cup event, you know the course with the crazy timber helter-skelter up the top, and the insane finishing shoot that came out next to the school playing fields!

f*king frightening riding that course solo, crashed about 1/2 way down, sitting in the bush surrounded by slithering creatures...
  • 23 13
Fuck you skeptics of this track. If you have a look at the track walk photos you'll see the pros are looking baffled! I'd love to see you huys try get down here with any sort of speed
  • 3 0
This course looks rad. A little bit of everything, wide open, single track, off camber, WHOOP SECTION?! This looks like a great course for putting everyone to the test physically, and still technically, although it may not be as extreme as some trolls seem to think.

That was the best part!! Half my soda went up my nose and all over my face when he said that. Hahaha!

The Stig knows two facts about ducks, and both are wrong. Claudio knows two facts about the Cairns world cup track, and both are wrong.
  • 9 2
There are no snakes and the roots are not slippery?
  • 9 0
 Coincidence? Possibly...
  • 64 0
Now the world knows why us Aussies are so fast even without the the big mountains. We have to go fast so spiders don't jump on our backs and snakes don't eat us.
  • 8 0
you guys have to survive from snakes and spiders before debut to world cup ... that's such a man thing! .. good luck Aussies!!! .. of course SikMik is im my dirt fantasy team
  • 9 0
Don't forget the kangaroos. Sam Hill has proven this to be very possible.

here's an example of the wonderful spiders of Cairns he's talking about:

"Where's crocodile Dundee when you need him?" Haha, that was beautiful but having been up that hill and seeing what looked like hundreds of beehives in the trees I can understand his concerns about the local wildlife.

 LMAO you'd never be late.
  • 20 0
Mmm, a course for the little dudes me thinks! Hart, Hill, Brosnan etc should tear it a new one ...(I don't think an XL V10 will actually fit through that corkscrew?).......but that flat bit at the end could spoil it for them!?
  • 8 0
A very two faced track, should make for good racing!
  • 2 0
I dont know man, I think it balances out with all the pedalling involved so the bigger guys probably end up being even
  • 20 5
Downvote if you will, but I don't like this track (at least from the video, no disrespect to Claudio he's funny as heck). It looks better suited to an enduro bike, just like South Africa. There are 2, maybe 3 sections where a full DH bike would actually be faster. Most of it is smooth, bermed, flat, or even uphill. No big gaps, one steep area, and it even looked like asphalt in places.
  • 23 2
That track looks like loads of fun to ride. I would love to make it down there someday to check it out and all the other local trails. At the same time, as a spectator I'd prefer to see tracks that are so full of gnar that my mind is blown by the riders' ability to rampage down it at full speed. This looks easy enough that most of us could ride the same line at a slower pace. Bring on the tracks where we wouldn't even think about hitting the pro lines at any speed!
  • 6 0
 Yes! This ^^^^^^ !!!!
  • 5 0
Can we get more Andorras please!
  • 3 1
i agree that it's not super gnarly (unless wet?) in most places, but Claudio also skipped some of the burliest sections and all of the gaps. no offense, Claudio, you're a legend and a better DH rider than I will ever be
  • 5 0
Well at least the track walk article has straightened out all you critics. Haven't seen one complaint from any actual riders yet, only people mentioning how knarly it is, apparently full of big gaps and tricky sections. Hopefully it beefs up just a bit more for next years worlds though.
  • 2 0
Is the race from top to bottom with no climbs? then it's a DH race.Seen the courses from the 90's? that was DH and those bikes had less travel than most trail bikes... Forgetting one thing here... The WC overall is won by an athlete not a bike, so let the ATHLETES use whatever suits them... tracks like this add variety to the season... This is not NASCAR
  • 2 0
Spark24 I'm under impression DH is becoming sprint version of Enduro. Just my preference but would be more interesting to have tracks where flat pedals, long travel and 26 wheels are actually advantage. Nothing against 27.5s, I run them as well, but not on proper DH trails.
  • 1 0
I did qualify my comment when I said "at least from the video"

Even still, it seems that fitness, not skill is the dominant quality needed on this track. It should be a fair balance of both.
  • 1 0
I agree, bring back Bromont and wyndham. You have to have a 26 on those tracks.
  • 2 0
from the course walks I've seen, the winner will have a mix of luck, skills and fitness. The qualifying results (everyone's sectors are all over the place) show this to be a challenging course.

DH isn't all about steepness, this track has huge amounts of off-camber slipperiness, very slippery long rock gardens, different line choices, whoops which don't appear to allow you to skim the tops moto style; all of which fit in to DH in my book.
  • 18 0
Claudio Caluori just makes videos so much better
  • 4 0
that's why he has been choosen so many times for this previews!! He deserves a spot next to rob!!
  • 20 3
I think Hannah made it look easy in the last video, that looks like a proper worlds track.
  • 4 2
Have to agree I have been pretty vocal with not feeling this track is quite at the worldcup level and while it has big rough sections its not the high speed rough we are used to but what this has is crazy tight technical off camber that riders will need to have perfect accuracy to hit this track with a winning time, there really is no room for error. Much happier with how the track is looking looking forward to sat.
  • 3 1
Should be a blast to ride in the wet.
  • 23 4
From the videos ive seen of this course it looks like there is a large rock garden near the top after about 10 repetitive berms, then not much else apart from alot of tight spots and a bit of off camber. OH not to mention some uphill stuff and large pedalling flat bits. What are you playing at UCI? Top level downhill course??? I dont think so! Are they trying to encourage people to ditch downhill bikes and eventually just having courses that small or mid travel bikes are more suited to??? How about having a 7 race series next year with steep tracks that only point down the hill !!!!!!!!!!! The track in Bright ( Australia ) one of the Aussie national tracks, looked much steeper and rougher than this one. I wish the top riders actually came out and say that some of the tracks are not up to scratch. Supposed to be testing riders limits every year with more challenging courses. Not testing to see how fast they can pedal a DH bike on flat ground or up a f*#king hill. Rant over, sorry.
  • 22 2
the conspiracy theorists amongst us would suggest that the UCI is favouring flatter/pedally/trail centre/bike park tracks as this is a 'watershed' year with the pushing of 27.5 on consumers. UCI = IOC = FIFA. all corrupt money hungry whores
  • 1 0
im joking of course. I can't see how brendawg's gambler (for example) would be any quicker on that smooth track with tight switchbacks than his genius. Maybe we'll see more crossover of bikes from now on now that AM bikes are so capable
  • 4 1
I think you are not far from the truth there dude, they def have too many tracks that call for lots of pedalling and with the big push from companies to make people buy 27.5 i dont think its a coincidence! Id love to see the riders vote for 7 courses that they would want to ride in a season. I want to see the top riders holding on so tight because the tracks are technical, fast and steep. Not because they are trying to pedal as much as possible! Wish everyone could vote for the tracks that they want to see used by the UCI. I know it costs a sh#t load of money to host one of these events, but with redbull on board and with all the other sponsors im sure the course selection could be improved and funded. What courses do pinkbike users wanna see back on he circuit??? Schladming is def one I want to see .... Suggestions anyone?
  • 2 0
It seems like they want more variation between tracks.

Can't say I really agree with this as smoother and more pedally riding is already covered by enduro and XC(E) so it seems more logical to feature LESS of these tracks and more steep/techy tracks because that's what sets DH apart.

Also I think the UCI should watch out for a discrepancy between the riding covered at the races and what the general public rides; it doesn't make sense to dumb courses down while regular riders are going in the other direction..
  • 6 0
There are lots of track here in Australia that are steeper and rougher.
Its just the matter of logistics the UCi from my understanding have certain requirements for facilities and times distance/time/accessibility from the trail. Also you need to put the bid in which is a big issue again.

Bright, thredbo, awaba, coffs are all tracks that would be better on the circuit than cairns in my opinion.
  • 18 5
Another XC track. UCI when will you realize, DH races must be held on DH courses??? My local trails are more World Cup oriented than these trails. First Pietermaritzburg ( which got a bit of an rock upgrade ) than this. Simple roots and smooth singletracks. As Claudio mentioned "old school part". Yes, that section was built when DH bikes had only 80-100mm suspension front and nothing in the rear.
Real DH tracks are Fort Bill, Val Di Sole, Windham, Champery and Andorra. When did you see anyone using a 29 Enduro bike in Champery??? Oh, never. Interesting.
Someone need to knock on UCI's head. Maybe they will think a bit more where to hold DH races.

Btw. Brendan also said in an interview, that DH tracks are getting easier and he wants to good old rough ones back.
  • 3 0
We need the steepest most technical courses that the UCI can find, nothing where riders are contemplating swapping for a small/ mid travel bike that pedals well over flat sections. The clues in the name of the sport, DOWNHILL racing = DH bikes
  • 3 1
Neg prop if you must, but with such an early start to the World Cup season, most places with real gnar dh courses are still covered in snow or undergoing a lot of post-season work on them after winter, in result the courses in the Southern Hemisphere, Cairns and SA, are all ready to go.
  • 2 0
They can build a gnarly track in pmb too, just need to think a bit more. And in cairns, lots of elevation is lost with the 7-8 switchbacks. Why not a huge straight, rugged rock garden there??
  • 12 0
I raced the world Champs as a Junior on this course back in 1996 - I still have great memories of the race, and Cairns, and diving the great barrier Reef! I remember they had a sharks mouth made from fiberglass for the start hut! when it came to race day the track turned into a river from the monsoon the night before, and we all slid down the Hill on our arses! I did make it through the Cork screw though! we have it so good with Disc brakes - I raved this on a 3" travel sintesi verlechi with a Marzochi (green DH fork with ... you guessed it 3" up front and V brakes!!!

Shaun Palmer killed it here on flat pedals and almost became World champion! what a great place - and the locals are the most friendly of anywhere I have ever Been! - wish I was there now!
  • 14 0
yeh it's def mic's style but roots and rocks and off camber is what sam has for breakfast just not the pedalling part i wouldnt count hill out of a top 5 at all

all shit talking aside, I feel like i could comfortably shred this trail first lift ride up for my DH season. PMB had some 70 ft tables i would not mess with. unless the video "smoothes it out" and deceives that much, i dunno. the fittest rider will win this one!

everyone hating on PMB. this track looks flatter than anything I have seen gopro or not. he was pedalling more than at PMB. Gaps, jumps.... JC would have a field day on this Enduro line...
  • 7 0
Don't worry, us pinkbikers have enough hate so that neither track will feel left out.
  • 3 1
if anything, i no longer hate the idea of pmb being on the calendar as they have made it more of a mans track compared to last year. cairns is by all accounts an xc trail that would be best suited to a 140mm 29er not a dh bike. what use is 8" of travel on this track?
  • 7 0
It's sad to see such a wimpy course at the WC level.
These racers are the world's best MTBR'S.
Is this course the best the world has to offer them?
  • 6 0
Ya what is going on here?
  • 12 4
Again a race for enduro bikes !?
  • 3 0
My $ on gwin w/650 enduro rig again.
  • 2 0
yess this an that would be awesome..........g.win again...
  • 5 1
Yes, there ARE gnarlier, steeper, etc. tracks out there to be raced on for sure. Unless the folks at those venues put in a bid, they will not get consideration. Even if they do, they must meet more criteria than just having the gnarliest track in the world. There needs to be enough lodging, transportation, medical-assistance, etc. within a required distance of the venue as well. They are making the most out of a little and, until I hear one of the racers say otherwise, everybody there seems to like it from what I've seen/heard so far. Besides, most of the venues that HAVE the steep gnar are still likely buried under snow - thus the southern hemisphere theme the first two races since they're wrapping up their summer down-under.

That being said, Mik should be considered a favorite as well as Gwin. I think a rider like Bryceland, Hill or Thirion could disturb the order come Saturday - Atkinson is my dark-horse for this one...go Bryn!!
  • 5 0
Yeah I think wel see the prototypes out again unfortunately. That is one huge pedal at the end, shame it's got no jump to finish!
  • 2 0
Vital has a pov of sikmik riding it way fast doing 70-90k an hour on off camber as the commentary explains in the sikmik vid got 2 fuckin charge it over the 60foot jump before the last straight 2 keep momentum up I think claudio was goin alot slower so it lpoked worse as he had 2 pedal alot so that could be a make or break 4 som e riders mik also picked gnarlier lines dont know bout all these arm chair critics but id be sliding down on my ass on this track or straight lining it into the bushes! !!
  • 2 0
Rockhampton council take notice. Mt. Archer IS over 600m in elevation and IS steep. Stop shooting your tourism opportunities in the foot and let us build world class downhill track(s) here! (Rockhampton is only 15 hours drive south of Cairns)
  • 1 0
Rocky would tick all the logistics boxes etc. to be able to host a WC event as Mt Archer is basically in town. But Capricornia isn't exactly a tourist destination unless you're coming in from the coal fields, and the council/community certainly couldn't be described as open minded or progressive. At least not when I lived there.
  • 1 0
I totally agree. However like all councils, ours talks a lot of crap. Of which making Mt Archer a top tourist destination was one pun they rolled out. It even made the newspaper. I read the headline and laughed. If they're serious about it they would help, not hinder us in building a 400m+ DH facility with shuttle access. Downhill is big here and back home in NZ, but in rocky it practically doesn't exist.
  • 7 2
i dont think i like the course that much
  • 5 1
I want Claudio to commentate ALL of the course previews!! The guy is MONEY!
  • 4 0
"The further you go the more roots you're gonna get" Claudio you sly dog haha.
  • 1 0
Looks like everyone has figured out this track from their computer chairs again. Enduro bikes and one single line. Even though all the teams are running their downhill bikes and the riders are still guessing which lines they will take the people on pinkbike know better.
  • 1 0
I just watched "This is Peaty" before watching this and said, HEY I think that's Claudio, THOSE GUYS and their shenanigans, sure enough, I watch this video and there they are as usual on Claudio's feed, throwing mud, water, and full-moon's. Good job Syndicate Crew!! Hahaha...
  • 3 0
what's with the steel post just before the finish line? someones going to die!
  • 1 0
To stop all the bogans. Be taken down on race day for sure.
  • 18 14
Excuse me, where's the DH curse????
  • 10 4
Remember when DH tracks used to have big natural drops and steep chutes all over. Don't worry Windham is coming in another 5 months.
  • 26 3
Have you ever seen a GoPro POV of your familiar home tracks? Everything's smoothened out, I'm pretty sure this track is appropriate. Hopefully not cursed though.
  • 4 15
flag mhoshal (Apr 23, 2014 at 4:49) (Below Threshold)
Isn't smoothing out the tracks defeating the purpose of downhill biking. May as well ride xc all mountain bikes there is no need for 8 inches of travel when you smooth stuff out
  • 16 0
He meant the video smooths the track out. Tracks never look as steep as they are in footage.
  • 14 2
I dunno where the DH curse is, but you should probably ask Gwin what he did with it, he had it last year.
  • 3 2
plenty of elevation by the looks of it but super smooth - tracks will have to catch up with 27.5 as if its sposed to smooth out tracks then surely we're looking at most guys taking their PMZ hybrid bikes over. maybe Fort bill we'll see the DH bikes get dusted off.
  • 3 0
dh curse is currently with sam hill. i'm sure many of us would like to see him win again.

@kerberos so true and so annoying at the same time

track is shit ! sorry for builders but you aren't in the right direction. Wait a little riders, Meribel is the best track this year
  • 2 1
Are they trying to DH CUP turn into ENDURO ? After South africa another XCDH track ? Where are all those fast and gnar tracks ?
  • 1 1
That's the point. Have you look at the medium speeds at PMB? Close to 70km/h, was it ride on asphalt??? I would like to see riders to show skills on the rough stuff and tight turns, not people pushing on clipped pedals as they are sprinting at the arrival of a flat stage of the Giro d'Italia...
Waiting for the real DH tracks.
  • 1 0
Love the course! Not steep enough but cool the see the pro on that one. Isn't it a very easy track? Seems not that steep to me and not much of a real rock garden.
