Video: 4 Different Lines Down Squamish's Iconic Gouranga Trail with Remy Metailler

May 16, 2019 at 11:04
by Rémy Métailler

Gouranga in Squamish is an iconic mountain bike trail. Towards the bottom of the trail, there is a long rock face that gives trouble to many riders. It's not an easy one as you can go way too fast down to it or pick the wrong line.

In this video, I will show you and explain the four different lines I ride on it. From the regular one that challenges lots of people already to the more advanced ones that only a few riders know about.

 1st line, could try that, second one - only if girls are watching, 3rd and 4th, count me out, Jesus Christ...

 Hey Waki, I'm always looking forward to see your comment whenever an article pops up on Pinkbike. I'll be in Sweden end of june, and I hope to see you there!

 @remymetailler: would be great! where in Sweden? I am going to Hafjell around 20th
  • 11 1
 @WAKIdesigns: I land the 30th, going to Are for the bike festival till the 8th.

 @remymetailler: Please report back. Curious if WAKI actually rides bikes, or just spends a lot of time online talking about riding bikes.

 @WAKIdesigns You've commented your way right into the industry. Well done! That said, I think a "Waki follows Remy" video on a trail of Remy's choice is now a future Must Watch. Please don't disappoint.

 @MTBrent: That would be awesome!

 same

 @remymetailler - considering it’s a week after my trip to Hafjell I doubt my wife will let me do a double weekend pass. But I will do my best. I guess you will land in Stockholm. If it’s Malmö or Gothenburg though... it shall be arranged. Åre is further away from Gothenburg than Alps Smile i’ll try!

 @WAKIdesigns: I get it, happy wife, happy life..

 @MTBrent: I followed Makken on Rollercoaster in Hafjell. That wasn’t good. He went 20% slower whipping and landing smooth As hell, while I cased every single jump. I stopped following after the upper part of the trail. No point. Then on another occasion same bike park, different trail, Bouldreloypa, I saw Kovarik getting off the lift as I started rolling in. He caught up on me half way. He made up at least 20sec cruising along within no more than 200 vertical meters. I am aware of my limitations... me following Remy would be a short video

 @WAKIdesigns: ..."but honey, it's REMY F#*$ METAILLER!!!!"

 @WAKIdesigns: Waki, everything is possible. We will make it work. Don't worry buddy.

 @WAKIdesigns: If you're at a point where she'll leave you if you go ride with Remi then the relationship was over anyway. If she truly loves you she'll understand, at least that's what I tell myself lol

 Check about 2:33 into the PB coverage of last year's enduro if Remy didn't convince you to control your speed:

 My wife says our life insurance is paid up, so I'm free to try any of those 4 lines. She insists I do it in the rain, to add to the cinematography effects. Excellent ride and video, Remy Metailler!

 If you see this in real life it's tens times as freaky. The pro line he took is insane!
  • 5 0
 Rode (walked my bike down) this trail two days ago in the rain, totally agree. Very little room for error or else you get a serious tumble. Video never does justice to the steepness.

 Looks fun - just not with SRAM brakes...
  • 20 1
 Good ad for my Hayes Dominion A4

 @remymetailler: I have 4 friends on those brakes. They all say their the best they've ever tried. Not cheap, but the best.

 @remymetailler: You're welcome!

 I was blown away and then I saw raindrops and my head exploded.

 I followed Remy down A-line at Crankworx having never run A-line before and I definitely had a couple “OH SHIT” moments LOL.

 So basically you have Hard mode, Expert mode, You're Sick! mode and Death Defying mode ?

I've got sweaty palms just by watching the video.
  • 2 0
 That dude’s got some serious skills and makes it look so easy... Which could potentially be a danger to people willing to try! Pretty sure that if I attempted any of these 4 lines I’d be f*cked...

 @pinkbike @remymetailler
Good quality video.
As a local rider and builder don’t think this is the most responsible way to show off creativity and riding skills. The promotion of braiding/destruction of local Squamish trails. I am very surprised to see this!
Cheers

 Hey @chossyballs I assume you could have built Chossy's Slab? If so I love this trail.

To reply to your comment, I try to be as careful as possible at not damaging existing trails or nature in general. When trying to push the limits of how a bike can be ridden sometimes this happens. On that particular video, I'm riding done a rock and have not made any modification to the existing trail, I use a different entrance and do not cause or encourage erosion. Also very few people can actually attempt those so the traffic will be very minimal.

 Last time I was up there I rode the slabs on the way and including Boney elbows and also in and out. That one freaked me out a little because it was so long. I couldn’t bring myself to do these rolls on gouranga but want to next time because I don’t like the idea of picking up that much speed. Can you go any slower? Or is it just that way like the last move of boney? I have the skill, but not the guts.
  • 4 0
 You can go very slow on the first half (I ride it pretty slow!), but the second part is gonna accelerate ya for sure.
  • 4 0
 @paulwatt: is right. Having said that the second half has a good runout.

Be aware in mid summer the first bit accumulates ball bearing-like gravel so cook that speed off before the second bit or learn to enjoy going sideways

 Hi Steep chutes are a mental thing you got to trust your brain to not to use too much front brake, the rest is easy?
  • 2 0
 Watching an artist paint is amazing, they make it look easy. Remy is an artist. BC trails all look awesome but some of the features look frightening, still, lifting ones game is always good.
  • 4 0
 This trail is gnar. Dont let his go pro fool you.
  • 3 0
 How about I just climb up on that rock and just hammer throw my bike off that rock and walk down whilst sucking my thumb
  • 2 0
 My god!! I don't think I would even ride the first one!!! Third and forth, wow, that's where you can see the difference between us and pro bikers!!! :O
  • 2 0
 I don't think I'd ever have big enough balls to try any of those lines. Looks incredible though.
  • 2 0
 Hey Remy have you ridden dieselwolf ?
I built it. Would be cool to see you riding it
  • 2 0
 Hey man, yes I did rode it, my bike even tumbled down the trail! I'll ride it again this year. Do you want me to do a video of it? Please reach at me on IG.

 So this is the type of video we were expecting from Yoann Barelli but didn't get i.e not just gopro footage. I hope Remy Metailler does a few more of these.
  • 1 0
 Technically Yoann will improve his footages, but Remy will never provide the spirit and the good mood that Yoann can give us. It`s rather funny but I was imagining Remy Metailler kind of like that: a bit too serious and boring.
  • 2 0
 @Franzzz: Personally I find that Yoan is trying too hard to be the next Cedric Gracia. I agree Remy isn't the most exciting guy out there but I got a much better idea of how to ride that section of trail than I did from Yoann's vid.
  • 1 0
 Would've enjoyed this even if it was just footage of riding, but the analysis makes it GREAT.
  • 1 0
 Why do I have a feeling that other french cat that shows the hard lines pulled up to the spot right after this was filmed.
  • 1 0
 His trail dog is much more educated than Yoann Barelli`s Jaxon. He can film! Well done Smile
  • 1 0
 Not much to it, is there?
  • 1 0
 @remymetailler What kind of a pack are you using in this video?
  • 2 0
 Camelbak chase vest! Does not move, does not bothers. I love it.
  • 2 0
 @remymetailler: Thanks!
