Is Retallack Lodge on your Bucket List?

Spencer dropping in off Reco Peak

You are now in the West Kootenays of BC surrounded by the Selkirk Mountains. Almost there. The mountains appear to be growing out of the lake before your eyes. A reclusive road splits off the highway and takes you deep into a secluded valley. "Where am I?" you ask. In the distance a sign for Retallack appears, followed by a turn off across a river. Down the dirt road, a luxury 11,000 sqft backcountry lodge comes into view and your mountain chariot awaits.

Arriving at Retallack lodge for dinner the night before, you are greeted by friendly lodge staff and the faint sound of a river fills your room. Downstairs the bartenders are mixing drinks while the good times roll on... There's no wait at the bar either. The dinner bell soon rings and you are treated to a three-course gourmet meal. After dinner, you migrate to the many après scenes the lodge has to offer. Neglin at the bar, Indo Jenga, hot tub, sauna, ping pong, archery and an 18 hole disc golf course are at your disposal.

You've got the whole place just for you and your friends. The lodge is yours. In the morning you wake up to a gourmet breakfast with a variety of options and locally roasted coffee. After a safety briefing, you load into the retrofitted military vehicle (aka "War Baby") and depart for the first lap. It doesn't matter what bike you are on or how advanced your skill level. The trails change and conform to your style whether you're riding a 29er hardtail or Kona Supreme Operator. Take your pick. The 150mm enduro seems to fit nicely and Kona Operators are available for rent. The trails have incredible flow and options with sight lines reaching far down the trail and no matter how many laps you fire off, you aren't feeling very tired.

You experience perfectly crafted hand-built singletrack at all elevation bands. Each trail has a unique flavour that blends perfectly together. You stop for lunch in the front of the lodge for a refresh and then load up, or just chill back for a bit. It doesn't matter. The vert is starting to add up; 5-10,000 ft before lunch 10-20,000 by the end of the day. The final lap ends creekside for a cool down with nachos and refreshments. What just happened? you ask. No worries, you'll repeat it again tomorrow. Maybe a couple pints on the disc golf course before dinner.

You wake up knowing a little bit more of how the program runs and what to expect, but you've really only just got your feet wet. Today is when things really start to kick in. You're getting to know the trails that you replayed in your head last night. You load up and head to a freshly crafted trail and are shown new lines and options from yesterday's lap. It feels like you are in an alternate universe at this point. You start even higher this next lap.

Retallack Lodge

Retallack's guiding staff keep the program running smoothly and the bike loading process is systematic. Any issues with beating up your truck to get to the top, annoying retrievals, friends missing out on laps, or where to go don't exist out here. Everything has been taken care of. You can feel safe knowing they are extremely well trained with the rescue equipment used and are professionally trained in backcountry rescue. There are two guides for every group and all bring their trail knowledge of flow, sneaky lines, and guidance. Riding with them brings a whole new experience for you and you feel like a better rider with each lap. They show you skills and tricks that open up the floodgates of your inner shredder.

Retallack's aprés bike scene is an experience of its own and as the final night goes on and the festivities ramp up, the feeling of having to leave this place and head back to reality starts to fill your mind. The rest of the crew tells you to forget that because you are all going Heli biking tomorrow. Remember? As unreal as the trails have been, the best is still yet to come. Huge enduro descents that define what mountain biking really is are on the list for tomorrow's agenda. The cool night replenishes the dirt's thirsty need for moisture.

You depart the lodge to get a couple of laps in before the flight and get a friendly buzz from the flying chariot as you descend to the staging area. Once down, the guides begin organizing and going over safety measures to make sure everything operates smoothly and efficiently. With the bikes loaded up, you start the ascent to any of the many peak trails. One is like riding a high-speed alpine pumptrack that never seems to end and rips along the most prominent ridge. Long and low doubles, off-trail slashers and natural airs are everywhere; you barely have to use your brakes. Another one, Texas Peak, presents a bit more of a challenge and rips along the ridge to an alpine berm fest into a bit of tech, then fires you out on a machine-built trail that almost rides like singletrack, but with an overwhelming amount of options. Maybe two laps are in order...

As you rip the last lap back to the lodge, it all starts to sink in that this was the best bike trip of your life. This place really provides a service like no other. Everything that you could imagine in a bike resort. The whole operation is a well-oiled machine, exceptional in all aspects. The service, food, lodging, guiding, trails and transport are next level. All you can really think about though, is how good of a time you had riding. Getting up each day with your friends and riding bikes without a care in the world. Maybe you should add another day next year???

@bluntaaronr: dude the place is amazing. you better do the heli day. Texas for Breakfast!!!!

@Krzymndyd: We did do Texas Peak and it was absolutely surreal. Reflecting back on the trip as a whole, the amazing trails were simply a bonus. What made it so special for me was the staff and how it is all about having a good time, whatever that may mean for a particular individual, they just make it happen. Riding behind Mike Kinrade was a whole new kind of drug that I was immediately addicted to. He even granted my request for staff laps on the last day! I got at least one lap with everyone on staff during my trip except for Colin (because he was nursing an injury) and Aisha doesn't ride bikes, but she still took a ride in the Rock Shox cab with me. Words don't exist to adequately describe how sacred and refreshing the Retallack experience is....

The crew at Retallack is awesome. They are super chill and their customer service is crazy good. Last year a group of 12 of us from Montana went up there and our guides, Smoke and The Dude, treated us so well. And they can party! They were always the last men standing. So yeah, it's on my bucket list - every year.

Lame question but what does tipping the guides look like? Trying to figure out how much this will cost to do right? If you don't mind sharing, what did the trip cost, roughly, for everything? Did you drive or fly? Love to know so i can save and do it right.
  • 3 0
 @dwmetalfab: THIS^^

The price seems pretty reasonable so I keep thinking there must be some hidden costs haha
  • 3 0
@dwmetalfab: Tipping is totally up to the individual. We drove. I never felt it was expected. I'd budget about $250 for incidentals. That is about what my wife and I paid for our bar tab, a hoodie, hat, coffee mugs, and tip.
  • 1 0
@rmx1: It is reasonable for what you get.

@rmx1: For $425 a day , I think I'll go to the French Riviera instead.

@DJ-24: or whis or Swiss Alps or Thailand and live like jesus

 @RichPune:

So about 1400, not including gas to get there should feel pretty comfortable. 300 for the first two days and 450 for the hell-bent day and a couple hundred for boos and tip.

Sounds fun, I'm going to need a another year to save for that. Hope my bike holds out... She's beat.

Retallack is a "bucket list" must check off. We went on a whim last year, with the USD being strong. The drive up to the Retallack, via Nelson and the lake is worth it alone. Such a beautiful place.

Mike has the show running sooooo smooth. The best part about it is that even though he's no BS, his peeps love him....absolutely love him and it shows as they guide, cook and party with you. Rylan (his 1st mate) is solid as well as the the afformentioned "Dude" and "Smoke" The Legend himself. Kia (House Mom) and hot as hell, is so sweet and keeps the boys in line, but don't let that fool you she'll run you over on the trail.

The trails are immaculate. No brake bumps, no gravel at the bottom of the turns and they'll let you drop 30K+ in a day if you're up to it. After riding the fun begins. Slacklining, frolfing while enjoying apres. The nights are fun as hell...the challenge being to stay up with the crew. (Don't let Mike get you going on the Nailen game, you'll be pounding some beers)

Accommodations are phenomenal. Food is 5 star and unique...they cater to your wishes - vegan, vegetarian, etc.. There is so much more complimentary stuff to say. Just know that you're riding where the Hoff Series is held and your being guided by one of smoothest and craziest Red Bull Rampage Legends that there is. Ask him about his Graveyard jump.

In other words....GO!!!!!

Launching the Maiden at Retallack a few years back was an absolute blast. Epic trails, epic people, and the perfect way to introduce people to a new bike. Also, it turns out that Simmons is pretty good at Indo-board Jenga whisky tasting.

When I decided that I had to take the trip to Retallack this year, I told myself that I'd be fine on my Evil Insurgent. Browsing all the videos tagged "Retallack", I of course came across the Maiden video again...There is now a Maiden in my garage waiting to be melt my face off with smiles in BC.

I think the only appropriate answer to the question asked in the title is "does a bear shit in the woods?"

The need for cat/heli skiing lodges to diversify with increasingly unpredictable winters will lead to more awesome places like this for us mountain bikers. Would love to do a long weekend at a place like this.

It was on my bucket list for skiing before the trails, now i want to ride it before I ski it

 Best trails in the world.

The price is much more reasonable then I thought it would be! Dang!

I had a brief taste of some of the trails during a BC Enduro race there a couple years ago and it was awesome! I can't imagine how great it would be when you don't have to hike your bike to the top!

I believe wrestling is also a post-ride activity there.... no? Big Grin

With Viktors and Colin from trail crew around, I would hope the hell not.....

Retallack is on my bucket list. You know what else is on my bucket list? Finding someone to fund my trip to Retallack.
  • 2 1
The phrase "aprés bike scene" reminds me of a joke I heard about upper middle class people.

All cynicism aside, I'll take simply heading out by myself or with few friends under our own power any day over this. So, not on my bucket list - too damn involved. But that don't mean that it isn't worth it for someone else or that I wouldn't do it under the right circumstances. More power to those who dig this kind of thing as there are plenty of trails for all and I'll talk about bike shit with anyone.

I loved everything about my trip to the lodge. Amazing people, views, trails, food, fun. Everyone is so chill and nice. Its a perfectly run, perfect weekend to experience.

My bucket list is starting to overflow. Like, I need a dump truck list or something.
  • 3 0
Basically cheaper than whistler with meals / riding / lodging boom! What a deal.
  • 1 1
It would be nice if you could opt for a 1 or 2 day option instead of having to commit (and pay) for a full 3 days. I would be there for sure to stay a night if this was the case.

I'm starting a Retallack fund right now. See ya next summer!!
  • 3 0
thats exactly what i did, put some cash per week away during the winter. Boom i'm there this summer Bucket list stuff mate

Interested to know how they get along with the local trail builders. It seems tempting to ride outside of their gate and then not reciprocate.
  • 3 0
The trails are built by Retallack - it's not an area you can exactly just drive or hike your bike into, so they had to custom do all their own stuff.
  • 2 0
Absolutely on my list and it is top on my LUST LIST. Def over the next 2 years.

Going back in July. No place like it.
