PRESS RELEASE: BMC

We joined forces with Pauline Ferrand-Prevot and custom paint magician Made Rad by Tony for the 2022 edition of the European Champion’s race bike.

For an exceptional rider such as Pauline Ferrand Prevot only the best is good enough. So we went all-in to celebrate our BMC MTB Racing member. A collaboration with American custom painter Tony Baumann, also known as Made Rad by Tony, was worked on in secret during the winter break and allowed Pauline to let her imagination run free. Pauline explains: “To create a contrast to my bike last year, which was rather dark, this time I wanted something bright!”

Of course, she also needed the frame to match her European Champion kit but added some personal touches along the way. The result? A race machine made for a racing star. Pauline’s BMC Fourstroke arrives with a marble finish. The down tube features a blue iridescent BMC logo, as well as the name of her mechanic: “who spends as much time working on my bike as me riding it.” 22 stars adorn the top tube to illustrate the 2022 season that kicked off with a win in the XCC event of the Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Petropolis, Brazil just a few weeks ago.

Pauline’s BMC Fourstroke will be ridden for the first time this weekend at the World Cup in Albstadt, Germany. “I am super excited to think that I’ll be riding the bike I envisioned. It is an extra motivation, and I can’t wait to arrive with this bike on the starting line.” With her customized 2022 BMC Fourstroke the stars have certainly aligned already for this weekend.

First, there were e-bikes, and now there are bikes with four-strokes? When will this madness stop?

BMC has painter paint bike. Refuses to honor warranty due to repainted bike.

might hit too close to home.. but try taking a custom painted heavily modified corvette back to the dealership after hitting a curb at 70mph and see what they say... see what GM says bout that!
  • 10 5
@Chubby-tyres: I know you thought that was cute, but really lame.
  • 9 1
@Chubby-tyres: custom paint = one door is primer
heavily modified = fake leather seat covers and bolt on wing
curb = ebike

I finished the context for you.
  • 3 0
@Chubby-tyres: You ran a car into a curb at 70 mph.... and you think they are gunna be worried about your paint job? lol
  • 3 0
@Chubby-tyres: Insurance. Not GM. GM does not care if you slam a tree or a house. Insurance covers that.
  • 3 1
I know it sucks. However there are very very few companies that paint bikes well and know how to handle the carbon fibre frames. So I do understand why most bike brands are refusing to honor warranty on frames that have been modified by an unkown company...

@k-enduro: Interesting, that makes sense actually. If you're surface prepping with a power tool and aren't familiar with composites at all, it's easy to sand through a bunch of structural plies and compromise the structure without knowing it

Sweet rig. White on bikes is becoming my preference; if the splashes of colour or graphics can hit the drivetrain area to kind of sorta hide grime, really liking the brightness after the black/matte/stealth phase of the past few years. You can really spruce up white/light colours with accent/graphic approaches.

Yeah, I know not every manufacturer was goth but there was a lotta dark bikes.

Could someone explain how they got the bike to appear floating in the first picture?

Probably some fishing line, that is what is usually used for those shots.

There is a clamp on the thru axle, holding it in place on the workbench. (I think)
  • 3 0
@Exbow: I first thought so but the clamp is holding down the wooden plank
  • 3 0
@Exbow: There are two edit marks on the white lines at the back indicating some kind of string or rope
  • 9 1
Someone threw the frame in the air while the photographer took a picture. Then catch the frame before it hits the ground. They probably needed a couple of tries. /s

@browner: oh man, photoshop work there is less than stellar
  • 2 1
Probably just (badly) photoshopped out the stand and post seen in the other photo.
  • 1 2
You take a photo of the scene without the bike, then a photo of the scene with the bike suspended, overlay them in Photoshop with the bike image on top of the bottom image, and then erase the part of the top image that has the string stool or whatever suspending the bike, so the bottom image shows through. You will be left with a magically floating bike.

@browner: There are also ones above the headtube, it's a pretty bad job.

I think I would have painted the strut that connects the seat and chain stays black so it stands out a lot less.

BMC riders stated on their IG they are using 120mm travel forks on their rigs, so I am curious if they also moved to fourstroke LT frames with 120mm of travel that look pretty much the same as fourstroke frames...
  • 2 0
They probably use the same frame for both models, just different shock stroke length

Any thoughts on the performance-vs-weight of that extra linkage member between the chainstay and ST (versus how Specialized, SC, others do linkage-driven single-pivot)? (Not sure what to call this BMC layout.)
  • 2 0
The BMC suspension is superior to a single pivot In every way but the tiny weight penalty.
  • 1 0
@Clink1983: Would love to try it

Posts story of beautiful frame. Also posts no close-up photos of said frame.

 Super cool!

How do Flexstays and the one sided vertical connection between seat and chainstay go together?
  • 1 0
What if we use a gas engine, wider wheels, comfier seat, lights?... maybe we are going somewhere.
  • 1 0
Looks like an E-Stroke to me.
  • 1 0
What is the gram-age? Doesn't look super light but could be wrong.
  • 1 2
It is not light, the 2019 frame -i don't hink they have updated the frame- weighs 2180g with shock and hardware. This paintjob certanly adds more weight, so nearly 500g heavier than some competitors frames
  • 1 0
@laupe: 500 grams is a substantial amount of weight.
  • 2 0
@laupe: you're on crack dude. It's maby 200 grams heavier than the lightest single pivots, which is meaningless. When you factor in the RAD dropper the complete builds are competitive weight wise with any other premium carbon XC bikes, and the suspension works a lot better.
  • 1 0
@Clink1983: I think you are the one on crack my dude. Orbea oiz Omx: 1740g. 2180-1740=440g
  • 1 0
@laupe: the full builds on the bmcs are 22lbs, which is right in line with other race bikes. Real world it's more like 200g at most. Claimed weights=\= real weights. My pivot 429sl xl was 2600 vs like 2300(?) for my oiz. There isn't an extra 500 grams hiding there.
  • 1 0
@Clink1983: The full weight og the bmc is competetive, but since this an article about the frame i figured we would stick with that. Have you heard about the new Orbea oiz omx? thats no 2300g frame

Integrated dropper post adjusting screw I'd say
