PRESS RELEASE: Formula

JUST BORN, ALREADY WORLD CHAMPION

Cura 4 is the brake that won the Downhill World Championship in 2017 in the élite men's category, while still at the prototype stage. From that race we have made great strides, making the Cura 4 even more powerful and reliable. Now Formula's World Champion brake is available for all riders.

We Went Beyond Expectations

With Cura 4, we set a very ambitious goal for ourselves. We tried to go beyond even our own expectations. Our direction was clear from the beginning: to create a brake that had no equal in terms of power and performance. One that was made of the highest quality materials and was accessible to a vast number of riders.

The four 18mm diameter pistons of the Cura 4 provide the rider with, up until now, unimaginable power. The expanded friction surface of the pads and the increased thickness guarantee perfect modulation. With Cura 4 you will be able to have maximum control over braking power. The optimized roll-back allows for reaching that exceptional lever feeling that has already made the Cura famous.

The Cura 4 inherits its quality of materials from its younger brother, Cura. In fact, it is a fully forged and anodized brake, a production process that guarantees structural quality, reliability over time, and low weight.

The lever, designed for the human factor, is our most ergonomic and intuitive yet.

Master Cylinder

Cura 4 shares the exact master cylinder structure as its younger brother, Cura. The axial master cylinder has an intuitive lever-feeling and responsive modulation. The lever, being one of the most intimate parts of the bike, was designed to serve the rider’s desire for more modulation to control the brake’s power. The large reservoir has multiple bleed ports and is positioned entirely above the master cylinder piston for simple, worry free bleeding.

4-Piston Caliper

The new, 4-piston caliper is the innovative heart of Cura 4. Four 18mm-diameter pistons attain unmatched braking power. The caliper is comprised of two pieces of forged aluminium. High quality anodizing allows friction to be minimized and reliability to be maximized. The design of the new caliper allows optimal management of power, giving a very linear and progressive feeling, while improving the performance.

Speed Lock hose -connection technology (proprietary to Formula) greatly facilitates the installation of the brake system on all frames equipped with internal cable passages. The power to weight ratio of Cura 4 is nothing short of amazing - all within a design that is deal for gravity or e-Bike use. Cura 4 brakes weigh only 379g (85cm tube, 160mm 1-piece disc and bolts included).

Mineral Oil

The Cura 4 continues Formula’s new efforts regarding the use of mineral oil. Formula mineral oil has a higher boiling point than that of other mineral oils on the market, this guarantees maximum performance in high temperatures in order to avoid overheating. On the other hand, at low temperatures, Formula mineral oil has a lower freezing point with respect to other mineral oils on the market. This allows Formula brakes to guarantee higher performances even at very low temperatures.

Rotors

Together with Cura 4 we are proud to introduce our new disc. After more than three years of development we have arrived at a design that combines the best of all the ‘must have’ features in a disc:

• Extreme lateral stiffness that guarantees impact resistance by protecting the disk from unwanted damage. A disc that’s not afraid of being abused will always guarantee an optimal centering with respect to the caliper;

• Optimized rotor to reduce unwanted noise caused by friction and at the same time providing a greater braking surface;

• A special anti-noise design which reduces the risk of resonance and vibrations with the frame being used;

• Reduced pad wear.

With the new disc, we have taken a big step forward in guaranteeing the highest level of performance. The new rotors will be available for all Formula brakes starting from 15 September 2018.

Speedlock fitting is both awesome and terrifying at the same time.
  • 57 6
It's a great idea in theory. In theory communism works.
  • 21 0
speedlock is not new feature with Cura brakes - speedlock was used also on CR1 and CR3 brakes - I'm using CR1 for few years and speedlock it's wonderful thing when you have bike with internal routing. No issues in my case. The little spring ring is a bit delicate, but as I said, no issues yet. Smile

 Take my money already!
Oh, does it come in Enduro Blue?
  • 11 1
Similar solutions have been used for decades in many hydraulic machines (industry, construction machinery etc), they were not needed for bike brakes because everything used to be routed externally but now that internal routing is pretty much a standard (and pain in the ass for mechanics) it really makes sense to introduce this sort of connectors. Reverb stealth has a fast connector for some time but it is pretty much useless because it doesn't fit through small hole on many bikes Big Grin
  • 5 3
@winko: yes, similar things have been around for decades for hydraulic machinery. Ask someone who works on such machines if there is such a thing as a quick disconnect that doesn't leak. (I even asked a manufacturer's rep of a company that made them, the answer is no). Also, a little air in a hydraulic motor system isn't the end of the world; unlike air in a brake, it will work itself out eventually.

Now those machines work at much higher pressures than a bike brake, so the fact that all industrial quick disconnects leak doesn't necessarily mean that this disconnect will.

What happens when you need to shorten the hose though?
  • 7 1
@doe222: Since you shorten from the lever end and the Speedlock is on the caliper end, I'd imagine the usual procedure applies.
  • 4 0
@codfather1234: Correct! You can shorten the hose from the M/C, standard procedure.

@friendlyfoe: in theory capitalism works too but you know
  • 1 1
@rideformula: What's the MC piston diameter?
  • 3 2
@friendlyfoe: in theory capitalism works too
  • 3 3
@friendlyfoe: CAPITALISM ISN'T WORKING. WE ARE DESTROYING OUR PLANET.

Why would you provide weights with 160mm rotors? Who runs 4 piston calipers with rotors that small?
  • 10 3
 Trail riders.
  • 5 1
 DJ bikes?
  • 5 0
I'm running Zees with 160mm on my little hardtail.
  • 9 2
More pistons = less need for enormous rotors
  • 15 0
@codfather1234: more pistons plus biggerer enormouser rotors
  • 6 0
@seraph: i run 203mm front and rear on my trail bike
  • 1 0
 smaller rotor = better modulation
two calipers = better modulation
  • 2 0
@RedRedRe: Can't agree. I couldn't decide which front rotor size better suites me so I have bought both 180 and 200 (Centerlines with Guide RSC). There's more power and also modulation / controls on the bigger one, that's for sure.

It's full of bold claims, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for 'em!
  • 4 4
The way this press release was written made me lose my appetite.
  • 2 0
 Comment win today sir!
  • 16 0
"(...) giving a very linear and progressive feeling (...)" - am I wrong or is that a contradiction in itself? ????
  • 1 0
Yeah, that doesn't make a whole bundle of sense, unless I'm completely misunderstanding.
  • 6 0
Maybe the effort to pull the lever is linear whilst the braking power increases progressivley?
  • 18 1
 Looks like a sess........sorry i meant Guide!
  • 12 1
The speed lock is on the wrong end. It'd take a while to trust that, but I'd want it at my levers so I could take my bar off to put it in my bike bag.
  • 7 3
I think you'll find that it is on both ends. The rubber boot on the lever has a bulge in it in much the same position of the grip ring is on the caliper.

@handynzl: I hope so! They should definitely clarify that. Whoever is in charge of these PR things should wake up and learn their product!
  • 23 1
@nuttypoolog: Hi, we put that information in the specs. Speed Lock is available for caliper side only. Thx a lot for your question.
  • 12 0
i was just about to buy some Hope V4's but now that this is here i have a fat fucking dilemma
  • 4 2
No dilemma. Hopes will never let you down, and you’ll never regret getting them. Proven, solid, good looking.
  • 4 0
"Available in Sept 2018". That help with your decision?
  • 2 1
@Abacall: But DOT... Hope please make Mineral Oil brakes!
  • 2 0
Got the "little Cura" and they have great power, I'm sure the four pot version is legit. No issues in a year of use. I'm British and not a mega fan of Hope although spares are readily available and they tend to last-avoid the braided hoses though...
  • 1 0
@slyfink: Shit didn't read that part. Hopes it is i guess. Cant wait to see how they feel compared to my saints. Although its hard to find spare parts for either brakes here.
  • 2 0
@NotNamed: I have both, and prefer DOT. The only extra step with DOT is disposal, which I do at the local auto parts store. DOT lasts longer, and generally has better braking properties.
I don't love the eco-part of it, but between two bikes I go through a cup a year. Pretty minimal impact.
  • 8 0
Want 4 pots. Though I know I only need 2 pots.
  • 3 1
Would love to try these and compare them to my saints. Of bleeding of these is easier I may consider them for my next build. Price is not a huge factor on these and only sit a margin over current offerings from other brands. If they hold up I could see these as a great alternative to the standard rsc’s currently being used on many a steed.
  • 3 0
Both SRAM and Shimano use different sizes for the leading and trailing pistons. This is done to get an even pressure distribution.
What are the reasons behind using equal size pistons here ?
  • 3 0
When are these brakes actually going to be available to the end user? You cant just tease us n then not let us buy em... Blank Stare
  • 3 0
The way that press release reads you'd think they could stop a war and bring world peace!
  • 2 0
@rideformula Any idea when the brakes will be available for sale? Same time as the rotors in September 2018?
  • 5 1
@Zaff: brakes and rotors will be both available starting from 15 September 2018. Cheers.
  • 3 0
Oh that's gonna be a long wait Frown
  • 6 0
@rideformula: but how are we suppose to stop until then?
  • 3 0
@Aziegler: just keep on riding Smile
  • 9 0
@Aziegler: stick in the spokes will do too, but lacks modulation :/
  • 1 1
@pinkbike - How about a brake calliper comparison? These brake look and sound well thought out. I like the detail about the brake levers being compatible with Shimano and SRAM shifters
  • 3 0
Wow...Formula PR showing us Cura 4 Love
  • 2 2
All I need to know is when you bleed them, will they still work properly... I have always liked the look and power of Formula brakes, but they have always proven to be inconsistent after bleeds...
  • 2 0
Easy to bleed, I just pushed fluid from the caliper into a Shimano bleed "bucket' on the master cylinder.
  • 2 1
@lance-h - here you can find a video tutorial for the bleed procedure bit.ly/2jQ7BBG
  • 2 1
@rideformula: I was referring to your all of the previous generation brakes that used DOT4 fluid. The lever feel before and after has been very inconsistent to say the least. Just as a reference, I have worked in shops for 15 years, bleeding thousands of brakes of all levels and manufacturers. Most times using proper bleed procedures resulted in brakes that dont allow for any pad gap of lever throw. Pistons not retracting properly to the point where we sent the brake to a service centre for Formula. The brakes would return in the same, non functioning order and that was enough for me to say no thanks.
  • 1 0
Ordered these in August. Brakes came in, but still waiting on rotors. My LBS cannot seem to get ahold of Formula. Any chance Formula is here and listening? Help.
  • 1 0
Is it specific formula's shape pads or a standard such as shimano (saint?) or sram (guide?)
  • 1 0
give it to me!!! I am curious as hell about that magic loss-free connector!!
  • 2 0
It's a good idea isn't it. i was wanting some similar fittings for the front calipers on my car but they are around £80 each so it isn't a cheap job. But very useful!
  • 2 0
The new rotor "guarantees impact resistance"... sounds like a challenge
  • 1 0
Evolving into shramano . Not a bad thing as long as they take all the good points of both ,
  • 2 0
Looks pretty sick and well thought out to me. Will keep them on my radar.
  • 3 2
Might be just what it takes to brake back into the market
  • 3 0
 They've been stopped before...
  • 2 1
 Finally ! I ´ll take 2 please !
  • 1 0
Is the lever same as on two piston version or different?
  • 1 0
@Kubajz84 - Hi, The Cura 4 and the Cura share exactly the same M/C.
  • 1 0
@rideformula: so why write Cura4 on the MC then? I was thinking of blending a 4 pot upfront to a 2 pot rear. Would have been nice to have identical MC then, also optically I mean.
  • 1 0
@EnduroManiac: We don't sell M/C and Caliper separately.
  • 2 1
If XTs and guides had a baby...
  • 1 0
On the day I bought 2 piston curas, they announced 4 piston version...
  • 1 1
what material is made of the pistons?
  • 3 0
@QWERTY1234 Hi, same as the M/C, forged aluminium.
  • 1 0
@rideformula: the actual pistons are Aluminium? Are they not a phenolic material? Also is there going to be a Centre-Lock version of the new rotor? Thank you
  • 2 1
@ollypack: The caliper i s forged aluminum. Yes, they'll also available with center lock.
  • 1 0
 Gimme!
  • 2 3
Are this black rotors? Or is it the light?
  • 10 0
Yeah it's the light: turn it on!
  • 5 6
 Please stop.
  • 18 2
That's usually the point with brakes.
