Spoke nipple colour coordination in the Transition pits.
Privateers don't have access to unlimited colour-coordinated spoke nipples.

Outside of the pro team pits and Red Bull live stream it's easy to forget about the privateer racers pouring all their own time and money into racing at the top level of downhill. We went for a lap of the privateer pits to meet some racers and see what bikes they've chosen to race the Fort William World Cup on.

How is a privateer on a prototype Canfield?! ???? I love it!
  • + 37
pretty cool huh, they must have spotted some potential, good way to get the brand out there without a huge budget.
  • + 32
Canfield dh prototype is all I saw, my eyes glazed over afterwords.
  • + 7
Without an idler at that. What trickery is this?
  • + 9
I don't know whether it's awesome or they're taking advantage of her...
  • + 6
 @Tinga: looks like a balance
  • + 4
@diego-b: headtube skull gusset... not a balance but could be a versatile model that could sport different front & rear suspension travel a la delirium...
  • + 18
How can privateers from Australia and NZ afford to pay the flights to Europe just for one WC ?? They have money printers ???
  • + 22
@RedBurn: They aren't truly privateers. They're more like semi pro. They have individual sponsorships. For ex: Someone sponsors their wheels/tires, another sponsors some mechanicals, one for gear, another for travel, so on and so forth... They just don't have full ticket rides like the big boys/girls.
  • + 5
prototype frame with 3 year old DHX shock?
  • + 2
 @m1dg3t: get it, thanks brother
  • + 2
 @Rucker10: CBF’n good stuff
  • + 18
@RedBurn: jordy works his ass off all year at a normal job to afford it.
  • + 3
@RedBurn: They are not here for one race. Leogang is next in a week. Then hanging out in Morzine till next race. #Vanzacs
  • + 3
That prototype is sweet! That skull gusset at the head tube is money!
  • + 1
@RedBurn: It's called Parents helping there kids fulfil a dream.
  • + 2
She really deserves it!Thats one traveling privateer right there!Shes everywhere!!
  • + 5
@rifrafi: that shock properly shimed and tuned works as well as any. It has likely been gutted with all the internals replaced.
  • + 2
@RedBurn: It's our winter so flights there are cheap but most likely they're either already living/working there on an OE or doing the "Let's go to UK and Europe for their summer and ride our bikes and do some races and shit!"
  • + 2
 @RedBurn: Michelle Corby
  • + 2
 @RedBurn: They're already p/t dentists!
  • + 2
@RedBurn: They ussually stay over there for the season. Just buy an old caravan and away you go.
  • + 1
 @rifrafi: That's what I was thinking.....can it be a sizing thing???
  • + 1
@RedBurn: most of them live in the uk anyway and work in every bar, pub and restaurant Wink
  • + 1
@RedBurn: Get a job, work hard, buy a plane ticket, go race your bike. Its the privateer lifestyle.
  • + 1
@jeves: what job... having a full times job unables you to train... without training racing at WC level is pointless. I doubt there are engineers , doctors or lawyers there.....
  • + 2
@RedBurn: The majority of WC riders have off season jobs and side hustles man. Only a hand full of those guys get a full “ride,” as it were.
  • + 1
@RedBurn: Personally, I work in the industry. I save all my pennies all off season, train my ass off, and then work part time to no time in the season and race all I can. This year it was a few EWS events and trips with the boys. Although it sounds like you've got it all figured out since you do a lot of traveling and racing at high levels...
  • + 1
@jeves: You are currently encouraging me to do the same Beer !
  • + 2
 @RedBurn: anyone can!!! Get it!!
  • + 79
Luke Cockburn gives absolutely zero fucks about your skin suit rule.
  • + 35
He gives zero fucks about any rule haha
  • + 16
He also looks like the biggest man alive. Either that is a weird angle, that bike is an extra small or his next career is going to be in the WWE
  • + 1
@savmeister: was concerned he’d cut his hair for a bit
  • + 3
 This guy for prime minister
  • + 2
Was also the best rider to watch at a BDS!
  • + 9
Hopefully he put on a shirt before he got sunburn.
  • + 5
@JVance: and especially kept his pants on to avoid a gnarly . . .
  • + 8
@savmeister: He gives zero f*cks about his cockburn.
  • + 2
Guys a legend, races in adidas tracksuit bottoms and a t shirt!
  • + 2
@Endurojack: Just seen the photos from FB

Yes he was wearing Adidas and and a supreme roost guard in the World Cup.

in awe at the size of this lad. absolute unit.
  • + 27
New Canfield! I'm guessing they're got a fully redesigned line in the works. Can't wait to see what they come up with.
  • + 13
I'm totally stoked for the new Canfield. Glad to see a small PNW company keep evolving and making new designs!
  • + 8
I got one word for ya! Linkage Plates!! That is a nice looking bike.
  • + 1
Wait for full sus new bike, even if its carbon, I might consider it...
  • + 3
@dannyhuber: they are not in the PNW anymore. i typed this with sad fingers
  • + 1
@Vudu74: bet that rolls over the bumps sooooo nice. Much like what I think YT's design is for.
  • + 0
@mojopedaler: They definitely still are near Bellingham, WA.
  • + 2
So GT and Commencal add a idler pulley and Canfield removes theirs?
  • + 26
oh gingers, now people call u 'cockburn' too?
  • + 2
I'm going to check his time...
  • + 12
judging by his kit, that'll be the only thing that doesn't burn.
  • + 22
Luke Cockburn is a legend. He's going places. He's the ginga ninja
  • + 14
 No big hits? Wtf.
  • + 9
 No Kona stinky ??
  • + 12
I tjhink my new favourite rider is Luke Cockburn.....
  • + 7
How we also see privateer bike checks soon.
  • + 7
 Hope** damn autocorrect
  • + 7
Start to interview these people PB, c'mon!
  • + 3
I'm always confused with these privateer articles when the people profiled have multiple sponsors. I would love a definition of "privateer." Is it just racing solo, i.e. no "team" to help them on race day?
  • + 2
I'd say pro=gets a salary, rides for a living. Privateer=might or might not get gear from sponsors or even travel money, but needs a day job to put food on the table (or in some cases works half a year, saves up living on a tight budget and then travels and races the rest of the time).
  • + 6
Privateers that qualify for WCs are the true GOATs.
  • + 6
That Solid Strike looks dam bomb proof.
  • + 2
To bad it looks like Joshua Barth is riding a chicken. Big Grin
  • + 5
faark yeah Jordy! send it bra
  • + 1
Privateer? Damn. They all have pretty nice higher end bikes. I raced a MASS race here in PA this weekend on a 2005 30lb+ Cannondale Prophet. Not downhill more like a gnarly xc race but still. How do they afford that stuff? Jealous.

Oh and that Canfield is seriously drool worthy.
  • + 5
When was the last time a privateer had a podium or top 10 finish in a WC?
  • + 12
dunno but Sian A'Hern qualified 9th, good job!
  • + 12
Monika Hrastnik 6th in Losinj. Not bad for a privateer. Smile
  • + 3
^ ^ both awesome. How cool would it be to see a privateer podium. Totally possible if it rains mid-race. Or better yet without.
  • + 3
 @cool3: wasn't Monica factory before?
  • + 2
@makripper: Don't know, but she should be sponsored for sure!
  • + 1
Look at thr ride she is in front...doesent cry "amateur" so much , does it?
  • + 1
I wish them good luck. But let's be honest. If they made the top 10 it would be amazing and make you wonder what the pro's works kit is doing. I guess they are hoping to get into top 30 and spotted
  • + 3
Does a privatreer gain money or they,re just doing it all for the sake of fun? ????
  • + 1
I was going about to say UCI might have a problem using that surname on back of his Jersey , can picture ROB saying out loud on RB tv here goes COCKBURN ! JUST dropped in that big Gap !!Smile
  • + 2
You should do set up videos, it'd be cool to see what they have tool wise and other forms of prep.
  • + 1
Australia and New Zealand apparently kicks out all DH talent so they can go chase their dreams...
  • + 2
 Luke Cockburn, Syndicate what’s up!
  • + 2
I’m sure I saw Norman Wisdom in there
  • + 2
Isnt Harry suposed to be on his honeymoon?
  • + 1
Anyone know why Cole Lucas is running both a shimano and sram rotor?
  • + 13
Because he can. You can too if you want.
  • + 1
 That Canfield prototype looks hardcore.
  • + 1
Two Pivot Phoenix !!! Great bikes
  • + 1
 cockburn is literally a firecrotch
  • + 1
Norco and yt bars look high...i wna try a commi
  • + 1
The reach on that Giant Glory is super short
  • + 1
Is Cole lucas really tall or that cube typically really short on reach?
  • + 11
It's a cube so you do the math.
  • + 5
 @danielwest330:
Maths
English language. English rules.
:-)
  • - 1
@markg1150: Math is short for mathematics, which would be fine. Why pluralize a plural? *We heard you liked plurals, so we pluralized your plurals*
  • + 1
@markg1150: English rules... what (since about the mid-1770's)? Wink
  • - 1
@mtbikeaddict: I'm not sure people who say "tuna fish", "koala bear", and miss a whole syllable in "aluminium", should be dictating the English language Razz
  • + 3
@Lejla: Ok, fine, British English rules. In that case, according to Encyclopaedia Brittanica (and Snopes.com, but I'm keeping it British here), British chemist Sir Humphry Davy christened the element "aluminum", which was only later changed to "aluminium" by England and some other countries. Not to mention the fact that "aluminium" isn't an entry... It's an aka under, wait for it... "Aluminum". You're absolutely right. The Brits are correct. Razz
  • + 1
@mtbikeaddict: Hope you noticed I'm somewhat joking! Yes I know the history of the word "aluminium" - however, it was settled on as "aluminium".

I believe this says "aluminium"

  • + 1
@Lejla: Oops, I meant to write "Britannica". Oh well. Anyway, yes, I was aware you are joking, and English, American English, whatever, it drives me crazy too! Razz Just some light-hearted banter; this is fun. I bet I could pull up some "aluminum" references...
  • + 1
@Lejla: Not to mention all the crazy grammar/spelling rules with countless exceptions... Don't even get me started on that. Oh, and oxymorons like "jumbo shrimp", etc. English is so maddeningly entertaining. Big Grin
  • + 1
 Good luck guys/gals. Much respect
  • + 1
 Fuck yeh pigeon
  • + 1
 That is one pasty dude.
  • - 2
Uh...colour-coordinated spoke nipples are available to everyone. They even cost the same as the black ones.
  • + 13
I know approximately zero privateers that have boxes of them looking like a bazaar of colourful spices, waiting for their mechanics to build them up though.
  • + 1
@brianpark: ya same here. That kind of stock would be excessive, and most privateers wrench their own bikes.
  • - 1
Now that is the funniest comment I've ever seen on pink bike!
  • - 1
Imagine having the last name Cockburn
  • + 2
Its pronounced "Coburn" but cockburn is funnier
