Shorter Stem

May 12, 2014 at 14:42
by Ruairidh Sharp
I'm looking to swap out my 70mm stem on my Trek Remedy 8. It has 150mm of travel and is fairly agile at speed. Im looking to swap out it's stem for something tougher and shorter.
Do I go 35mm length or 50mm?
I ride uphill for my descents and find myself doing lots of laps. I think 50mm would be perfect here but 35mm would improve the downhills? (It will need to be tough)
PLEASE ADVISE!!!

Thanks.

Depends on how youre liking the sizing of the bike I suppose, I ran 35mm on my old am bike because it was a bit big for me and it sorted the sizing issues but I always felt much more comfortable and faster running 50-60mm stems even when descending so unfortunately this is just one of those experiment and see what you prefer situations without messing up the sizing of your bike too much, 50mm would probably be the safer bet though

Thanks very much. Asides from the saddle its the only ride changing upgrade that's being made at the moment so it's a big decision for me! Thanks again, Ruairidh.

No worries, I dont know what stems you've looked at so far but kore repute stems are so nice, stiff, very light and not too bad on price at £40, look sexy as well and come in 35 and 50mm

Thanks a lot, what's their strength like?

no issues so far, plenty of people running them on their dj and dh/fr rigs, way stronger than any stem that ridiculously light has any right to be!
