Why is front suspension needed for this? My only conclusion is that it is marketing, because without front suspension those can't be mountain bikes right?

yeah and had rear suspension. these guy bikes look like they are from the dark ages. they need to get with the times. that track looked terribly bumpy but with rear suspension and larger wheels they would hardly feel it.
