5 Things We Learned at the Mont-Sainte-Anne World Cup

Aug 11, 2018 at 15:40
by Sarah Moore
Amaury Pierron kicking up dust.

1. Amaury Pierron has won the World Cup overall

With 1088 points to Loris Vergier's 781, Amaury Pierron has cinched the 2018 World Cup overall before wheels even hit the ground for the final round in La Bresse, France. He started off with a 16th in Losinj, but followed that up with three wins and two more podium finishes, including a fourth place at Mont-Sainte-Anne despite a massive crash in practice.
What a day for Amaury Pierron. Taking the top spot in a crazy race and being joined on the podium by to fellow Frenchman and close friends.

2. Little wheels can still sweep the Top 3

Rachel Atherton, Tahnee Seagrave and Tracey Hannah were all on 27.5" wheels, as were Loic Bruni, Troy Brosnan and Danny Hart. Amaury Pierron was the top rider on 29er wheels in fourth place.
Tracey Hannah ended up in 4th albeit a second or so off 3rd placed Myriam Nicole but it looked like she had some issues in her run.

3. The youth are taking over

Rob Warner and Claudio Caluori told us in the Mont-Sainte-Anne pre-show that the average age of winners is five years younger this year than it was in 2017. In 2017, the average age of race winners was 28.7 years, and in 2018, the average age is 23.6 years.
A very popular win for Loris Vergier and equally popular return to the podium for Brook MacDonald.

4. The French are unstoppable...again

Three of the top 5 men who finished on the podium at Mont-Sainte-Anne were from France. In addition, the last five World Cups were won by Frenchmen. Amaury Pierron won Fort William, Leogang, and Val di Sole, Loris Vergier won Andorra, and now Loic Bruni has won Mont-Sainte-Anne.
A very similar photo was taken here in 2015 when Loic Bruni won World Chamionships. Today it was a similar embrace between two childhood friends but this time to celebrate Loris Vergier first World Cup win. These two guys have been through it all together and have and shared in each others victories and defeats. And always with a touch of class.

5. Rachel Atherton now ties Sabrina Jonnier for a record number of wins at Mont-Sainte-Anne

Sabrina Jonnier won the Mont-Sainte-Anne World Cup in 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009. Rachel Atherton won in 2008, 2012, 2015, 2016 and now, 2018.
Rachel Atherton is up some 14 seconds on Myriam Nicole but has 2.5 to find to catch Seagrave tomorrow.

Other tidbits:
• Gee Atherton has started 100 World Cups.
• Aaron Gwin is still in the top 10 overall despite missing 2 rounds, and Myriam Nicole is still in the top 5 overall despite missing 2 rounds and flatting in today's race.
• Rachel Atherton's winning time was 20 seconds faster than her qualifying time, and Loic Bruni's was 9 seconds faster.
• Battling with pain from past wrist injuries, this was World Champion Miranda Miller's first top 10 of the season.
• Angel Suarez got his first elite top 10.

What did we miss? What stood out to you this during this weekend's race?

Miranda Miller was 45 seconds off the pace. She is definitely not performing at her best. Perhaps she needs some rehab and time off the bike? I hate to see someone with her skills and work ethic suffer like that. It must be hard.
  • 17 13
looking at her resaults this year and the world cup resaults from last, there had to be a massive messup with the timing at last years world champs, and I not talking about Miriam's run
  • 17 2
@ictus: Did you see the race? Rachel DNS due to a broken collar bone from practise. All the other top women had crashes. She was lucky but there was no mistakes in timing
  • 8 1
I've ridden with Miranda, until four turns in at Whistler and I couldn't see her any more. She's fast, and can certainly compete. Would love to see her pushing the leading times at every race. Would love to see 10 girls competing for first place, rather than three. Kind of wish Emmeline Ragot still raced

FSR is still winning. The high pivot and 29erds are better suited for euro style bike parks. Sal Massholekadonk can kiss my horse's ass.

@karatechris: no mistakes??? what about Miriam's time??
  • 2 3
Miriam didn't even have a watch on, she has no idea what time it is.
  • 2 1
She's suffering big time with her wrist atm. I follow her on insta and she's been getting tonnes of treatment for it but every ride this year has been tough. Hopefully she'll have a good off season and get it proper sorted.
  • 2 4
I'm sending her a Casio watch with the calculator on it, I heard they are the best!
  • 5 2
@Waldon83: lol maybe you are slow
  • 4 3
 @makripper: this.

I love when people say "I rode with x and they dropped me, they are fast."

We aren't all buds in real life, so wtf do we care if you got dropped by someone. It doesn't have any meaning.

@nvranka: haha that's basically the point of racing. Takes the talk out of it and makes it black and white
  • 2 1
@fecalmaster: please stop telling one bad joke after another, thank you!
  • 2 3
@florianschreiber: No , will never stop me. Love it or love it.

I'm sorry but the average age winner stat is not a good indicator. The average will be significantly different when you have a young rider like Amaury win 3 races, and racers like Gwin/Minnaar out with injuries. Today we saw Bruni, Brosnan, and Hart top 3...and they have more than a few years of racing under their belt. I think we will continue to see a good age mix on the top steps in years to come.
  • 8 0
I imagine the average changes quite a lot when Greg wins as he is such an outlier in age. Greg won a few in 17 and has been injured for a lot of 18. It would be interesting to see what the difference is if you remove Greg's wins from the 17 average.
  • 12 0
average is a terrible statistic that you see in all sorts of places!!
  • 2 1
@friendlyfoe: it's not too bad actually in this case. Averaging via taking a mean falls apart when you have disparate limits from the median on the dataset. If you consider "peak" riders as late twenties, say 27ish, than +/- 8 years is 19 and 35, both of which would be damn surprising to see win a world cup. Greg skews it slightly, but not too much.
  • 4 0
@catweasel Don't forget Gwin... he's 30. When the two most dominant racers in modern history are healthy, they will for sure increase the average winning age.
  • 1 0
 Brosnan and Bruni are young
  • 1 0
@catweasel: pretty sure it's because of Greg and Gwin being out. 31 and 36

 Great job Angel Suarez!
  • 8 0
So happy for him, he has had sone rough times, but the pace is there. Solid result in the longest, toughest track of the year. Bring Angel to the fantasy league please!

@luckymixes: I'm confident Pinkbike will put a lot of effort in improving the FL in 2019!

 1) Rachel Atherton is still amazing to watch.
2) Smaller wheels are more nimble than bigger wheels.
3) Bigger wheels may be faster in a smooth course asphalt DH drag race.
4) DH MTB is not a smooth course drag race.
5) Bike industry needs to stop trying to force short people to ride big unwieldy wheels on MTB.
6) Loic Bruni agrees with points 2-5.
7) Loic Bruni shreds!

God damn this stupid wheel debate. To each their own. Personally, I love the fact that WCDH allows such freedom in uses of technology. Complete opposite of FIS Ski Racing, whose goal is to make the sport as little fun as possible.
  • 3 1
I hear you. I'm almost 6'1" and feel like a large (from most companies) on 27.5's is the ultimate in roll and playfulness, and loved it when I heard Bruni say he was bummed he thought he might have to ride 29 to win because he loves 27.5. I ride pretty fast and pretty big, but nothing compared to the big boys and to hear him sing the values of his favorite size was all I needed to stick with my favorite

Those who Instagrammed video clips of riding motos prior to MSA did really well.
  • 9 0
Whoa, Brosnan, Bruni, and Hart were a whole different level in that tricky right-hander--and they all took different lines from each other.
  • 10 0
 20 seconds faster
  • 15 0
Right... that run was vintage atherton. All there when she needed it. Last round gonna be exciting for the ladies.
  • 9 1
She was mad as fuck lol that was so sick to watch
  • 3 0
Such a sick run. She was full gas attacking.

She was unfortunately and I had to hear and smell her flatulent's at the finish line.

one of the best runs of the year, M or W
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: the DSQ totally screwed Seagrave out of the overall, no way Atherton isn't going to take it. Not all that exciting
  • 2 0
@src248: pretty sure it's till really really close man. Like 80 points between them. It most definitely will come down to them in the last stop... whoever does better wins the overall.

Technically speaking, Tracey Hannah is still in it. If both Seagrave and Atherton have major issues and she wins it could get real interesting.

Men... with Gwin. being down no one has been within reach of Amaury for a while. Crazy to think that if Gwin wins the last stop he could finish in the top 5 with essentially missing more than half the season. Him healthy it's a much more interesting result. Next year is gonna be sick.

Gwin, Amaury, Greenland is really looking great, Vergier just keeps getting faster, Minnaar will be back healthy and pushing really hard, Shaw is due. Brook is riding like a wild animal per the usual but he's right there too. Etc etc etc. The mens class is wide open right now. I think Gwin comes back and wins 3 next year. Minnaar will probably win 1. Amaury and the rest will fight it out for the other 3. Sick.

And the women's field has a legit top 10 now.

Next year gonna be sick.

@onemanarmy: there's 110 points between them, Rach only needs a top 5ish to get the overall... She could do that with a crash, there's no way she isn't getting it short of dsq or something going HORRIBLY wrong
  • 1 0
@src248: Where'd you see 110? I can never get accurate numbers from the UTI.... I mean UCI website. it's horrible. I think Redbull's might be one event behind.

Either way. It's still pretty close. Bad qualifying. A crash or mechanical or even just a poor line choice and she could drop that far. But I really think she's going to win so it won't really be up for discussion. LOL!
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: UCI is horrible, I'm looking at Eliot Jackson's website. I know qualifying isn't worth any points next round but I'm not sure if first gets 200 or 250 points, which probably changes things. If it's 200 she just needs to get 6th to take the overall and her worst result this season is 3rd.
  • 1 0
@src248: I'm pretty sure no qualifying points but it's 250 for a win.
  • 1 0
You get 25 extra points for racing naked this round.
  • 5 1
If anything this just proves that wheels are more of a height thing. Line choice and a bike that can handle the abuse are more important. With that said I will be choosing 27.5 for my next bike because I love hitting transitions and do not have that monster truck style. I am also not a racer just a guy that cannot skip a jump when I see it.
  • 8 1
Trust Martin Whitely to choose an up and comer..If Angel continues to improve - watch out.

He's managed a few guys who ended up in the midpack for life.

Too bad for Kirk McDowall who came in 12th place last year. Tagged a tree on his race run.

Gwin, Pierron, young, old - glad to see stats like these included amongst the ‘big ones’:

“Angel Suarez got his first elite top 10.”

 Greg’s massive huck…

Amazing race, just hope Greenland is back fit for the next round

Valentina Holl's time would have been 6th in Elite women... and was 45 second up on all other Junior Women... oh, and she let another rider borrow her bike... that rider finished 6th in Elite Women... just a minor note...

27.5 faster. I made the right choice

I might consider getting a 27.5 front wheel after hitting all those 275 holes with my 26 today...

And didn't we already know #3 and honestly, #4, what records hasn't Rachel matched or crushed?

Is it just you or does Brook McDonald's look hilarious in his race runs. I just wait for it knowing a hilarious get off is destin.
