Andreu Lacondeguy Out of Red Bull Rampage 2021 After Practice Crash

Oct 13, 2021 at 9:38
by Sarah Moore
Andreu pushing back up while sessioning the bottom feature.

After a first session at the bottom of the mountain on the section of his line that he shares with Ethan Nell yesterday, Andreu Lacondeguy headed higher up the mountain to test some of his new features up there. He was testing the speed on one of his jumps mid-mountain and went deep, crashing over the bars in what he says is his hardest ever hit. He's going to get surgery early next week for the broken bones.

bigquotesI wish that I would never had to post this but it is what it is. I had a terrible crash last night on my first practice for Rampage. I over jumped a technical section of my line and ended up hitting the ground harder than I ever did. Gonna get surgery early next week to get all fixed and I hope I can start moving in the next 3 days. This is one of the most painful moments of my career, mentally and physically, the broken bones hurt but not being able to ride the event after all I been through this last year is what hurts the most.

I Want to thank my team @lluislacondeguy @markmtbmcclure for all the hard work and all the help , also big thanks to @h5events and his medical team for getting me out of the mountain in one piece, also huge thanks to all the riders and diggers for the help and kind messages, I wish you all the best on the next days and I hope everything works out for you guys.
Andreu Lacondeguy

You can see a video of the crash here.

We are devastated that this means we won't be seeing Andreu during finals and we wish him all the best with recovery.

Andreu didn t blink hitting this drop and then rolled into the trick jump and boosted it to the moon. Once he finally landed he said So much fun I forgot how much fun bikes were We made his comment PG.

The Lacondeguy brothers putting the finishing touches on Andreu s line.

Classic Andreau flatspin.

Andreu or Aggy... always the most anticipated, and when it comes together its magic.

 @Sweatypants: after Brendog.

Always entertaining and always so excited to be just riding!!

 Crap me too
  • 19 0
His run in 2019 was so savage!
  • 3 3
Same here man. Fucking a that's disappointing. He looked so good in 2019 but riding that aggressively means lots of crashes. Hopefully he's OK and surgery goes well. Time to change the fantasy team lol.
  • 4 0
Oh man, I was so looking forward to seeing him ride this year, his flair and panache are unrivalled.
  • 13 8
His rusted frame must have broke on him.
  • 13 0
The way Andreu attacks the course is second to none. Full charge top to bottom. Wishing him a fast recovery!

 @slayerdegnar: Too soon bro
  • 4 0
There goes my prediction, so bummed.
  • 3 0
Likewise. Wishing you a full Recovery Andreu!!
  • 120 1
Even though my fantasy predictions are fucked... It was worth it to always stand behind this man. My favorite rider at Rampage every year. He may not have the rawest lines but he keeps it fast and out of control. One way or another, Rampage is about pushing the limits. Andreu always been right there. Heal up, legend.

Andreu all day, everyday. My fav big Mtn rider. Gutted for him.
  • 100 3
God damn it, gutted for him. I was so hyped to see Andreu ride this year. Heal up!

@pb-kg: twice though. LOL! I bet they'll start doing it just because they think it's funny now. The seal has been broken and the sheep shall follow.

I think what Andreu is most upset about is people's fucking fantasy teams.

This news is even worse than the addition of the Outside top menu.

Can we start calling these "crash during practice" instead of "practice crash"?

Practice Crash sounds like the rider helmets up, and says something like "well about that time to work on my eat it skills"
  • 20 0
I frequently practice crashing. I'm known locally as a crashing expert. Give me a Red Bull helmet.
  • 14 0
@aaronjb: welcome to RedBull Rampage... As a barometer for the caliber of athletes we will witness, we're opening up with a run from Captain Yardsale"
  • 2 0
 @focofox37: lol
  • 21 0
oh my - the the most favorite rider to watch is ou - damn and get well soon

does anybody know why he is not a Red Bull athlete (helmet) anymore?

I just noticed this too. I wonder what happened

 Rampage got robbed!

Damn it. The coolest rider on the coolest bike. Get well soon! Don't let that bike rust while you recover!

 DJ getting the call up?
  • 3 2
hopefully he doesnt get todd barbered again
  • 4 0
Was thinking the same thing. Normally I'd say it's way too late but dudes already out there and he's been digging. I'm sure if they asked he'd say yes.
  • 1 0
 @quesoquesoqueso: who is Todd barber?
  • 1 0
@quesoquesoqueso: What do you mean by todd barbered. Cmon spill the details
  • 8 8
@quesoquesoqueso: Would have watched Andreu get robbed on a winning run by politics of Red Bull. After dropping him would they actually let him win? Doubt it. It’s a shame a majority of this sport is monopolized by one brand and there motives.
  • 4 1
@InstantBreakfast: been running Rampage oh since forever.
  • 2 5
@Henary: i dont have any. im just guessing the organizer has kept brandt out.

@quesoquesoqueso: or RB just wanted to invite there own athletes to have a better success rate % to control the outcome of an event they invest millions into. Shades

@MTBthoroughbred: As a rider you have to pay royalties to RB so I wouldn't call it he got dropped
  • 6 1
@dark-o: what does that even mean? Lmao
  • 5 0
@quesoquesoqueso: DJ Brandt was at the 2019 rampage and got 16th. He was an alternate for this year (they gave the first two alternate spots to others who had better results in 2019). I don't think they are keeping him out. Hopefully he makes it to the 2022 rampage.
  • 4 0
@vesania: I think that is totally fair who they chose first. I think people are rooting for DJ because he is out there all year putting in the work to make this kind of stuff better.

They need to make like a ring or a plaque or something. Something nice. Goes to every athlete that's there every year. Crash out. Get injured. Whatever. Doesn't matter, you still get the plaque. Like NFL players. They still get super bowl rings even if they don't play. You're their you earned your way there one way or another. It's amazing to just get the invite. These guys should all get something to put on the wall. This isn't your local amateur dual slalom race. Just saying. Heal up dude. You're definitely going to be missed. Hopefully the breaks are clean.
  • 7 0
Bummer, he is one of the funnest to watch, but I'm glad the injuries weren't worse considering how hard it looks like he hit. Will they still be pulling in the alternate riders, or is it too short of notice?
  • 5 0
Every time I see reports of a pro rider crashing with videos, or every time I watch the Friday Fails, I hope for an insightful discussion and analysis of "what went wrong" in the comment section, in order for us amateurs to learn and prevent - even if it's just a little bit - big crashes and to further build a body of knowledge on riding technique.

I know that's wishful thinking to see anything intelligent stemming from Pinkbike's comment section. But hey, I'll give it a shot a see where this goes:

Is this a text-book overshot ? Too much speed, resulting in being to far stretch at the end of the landing ?
Suspension setting for freeride being so stiff they absolutely need to hit the landing's sweet spot ?
Or no matter the suspension setting the speed and heights of that overshot was irremediably leading to a crash ?
  • 6 0
He overshoots, lands back-wheel heavy as a result of said overshoot, and then gets bucked forward for not landing evenly. And at that speed / height, the buck is so much force that he gets pushed over the front, almost holds it for a split second, but eventually goes OTB in catastrophic fashion.
  • 1 0
@Jvhowube: That's the sort of comment I would like to see every time Pinkbike post a video of a pro-rider crashing. Thanks.
  • 7 0
Man Andreu must be so bummed. The wounds will heal, take care of your mental health man, we all support you!
  • 4 0
Crazy some of the crashes these guys are subject to. I just had a stupid slow motion crash on flat ground yesterday riding over a pile of leaves. Front tire washed out instantly and I was down. Have some pretty bad pain from it today. I wouldn't want any part of a crash at Red Bull.
  • 3 0
Man...he's one of the guys that makes you go WOW. He and Brage were on my must-see list. I'm also perhaps not surprised, this guy goes REALLY hard and really fast into stuff that others don't. He crushes the whole "Amplitude" category. Hope he's ok, sounds like its not good.
  • 7 0
 Tom Pidcock will replace
  • 2 0
So bummed to hear about this. Andreau is such a hard worker and I know a lot of people were ready to see him another one. His riding has been so dialed the past year. Heal up solid buddy!
  • 1 0
NO!!! That was an absolutely savage crater hit on the ground. Hope you heal up quick man. You are a fan favorite and one of the very best to ever ride Rampage. Lacondeguy for the win in 2022!

Posts here, or anywhere for that matter, should all be positive, healing vibes. No negative comments, all positive things for A.L.!

Regardless of whether people regard him as a favorite to win or not, I think many think he is a rider who could pull out a victory at any time. He is one of the more courageous & creative riders.

"Andreu is always sending the biggest lines and is exciting to watch and we hope he has something special planned for this year's event. For third place, we're going to go with Kurt Sorge. He didn't have success in 2019, but last time the event took place at this venue in 2017, he took the win. With a great line to work with and tons of practice on his backyard dream jumps, we have a feeling he could put down a special run. "

2 // Andreu Lacondeguy
3 // Kurt Sorge"

You did this Pinkbike... you did this. With your 2nd place vibes out there in the world. May this shame be forever on your head.

Dang that sucks for him..... And no more Zeb for me. I had him in 2nd.
  • 6 9
Someone is going to die at rampage and they need to have thought about it already and decided whether they and we as the audience are okay with it.
  • 6 1
we see these comments every year. we obviously all hope nothing ever happens seriously to any of them but these are extremely talented professional athletes who live to push their limits, this is what makes them happy, this is why they do the sport. taking away the event wouldn't stop anything.
  • 1 0
Remember this is their choice. They want to do this. If they die it's on them. We all accept the risks when we get on our bikes, these guys are just riding at a far more intense level than all us average Joe's.
  • 4 0
@ThunderChunk: Ultimately I get that and I share the admiration for the riders, I just feel like there's also a sponsor pressure to go a bit more than you'd normally be comfortable with, etc. It's not Tippie and friends filming themselves pushing the limits in Kamloops in the 90s, it's a sponsor event which is commercially driven, generates needed monetizable social media content, it's basically a rider mill for money. Hoping everyone has a great event.
  • 1 1
@TrevZ: disagree. you don't think those big youtube riders aren't pushing themselves? they're going bigger and bigger for an edit.. that's how they're getting and keeping viewers and ultimately how they're getting sponsored. Getting in your car and driving to your favourite trails is probably more dangerous in the scheme of what we do on the trails in comparison. You can't live in fear of what /might/ or /could/ happen
  • 1 0
@TrevZ: I disagree, if you watch interviews from the riders they are pushing themselves for their own personal reasons. If their sponsor is pressuring them and they don't like it, they can drop out or refuse the Invitation.
  • 1 1
there goes my top 3 Frown

Man, the crash didn't even look that bad. Its nuts how physics works.
  • 3 0
he was absolutely rocket-propelled into the ground though, which is what likely did the damage. Agree though, that sort of drop is totally in his wheel house.
  • 4 0
well he dropped from like a 5-8th(?) floor, one suspension hit and then complete stop in like 2-3m.
Heal up well!!
  • 3 0
Didn't look bad?! From my planet it looked f#cked!!!
  • 7 9
 was he a bit Rusty?
