Neko Mulally Broke Finger in Practice at Downhill Southeast Race

by Sarah Moore

Neko Mulally has announced on his Instagram that he broke his finger on Friday during practice for the Downhill Southeast race. Mulally has since undergone surgery and still plans to race at Lourdes at the end of the month.

bigquotesClipped a tree and broke my finger on Friday in practice for the Downhill Southeast race. Tried to get it fixed in Chattanooga, but no luck, so I flew to Tallahassee and @jackeberg lined up a spot for his dad to fix it between cases yesterday morning. Should be 2-3 weeks off the DH bike, but I can keep training and get back on the bike week before Lourdes. Vibrations might be a little painful at first but I can tough it out.

So glad I got it fixed by Dr. Berg. He’s a rider, fixes a lot of the top motocross guys, and knows that I need to race. He cut the pins short so that they are under the skin and I can ride with them in, something that probably wouldn’t get done by another doctor.

All and all, it’s just a broken finger, and I’ll be fine. Gotta work around it these next few weeks while it catches up. I’m glad the World Cup is still on. Maybe some extra sleep will be a good thing, been doing a lot!

With 2-3 weeks off the DH bike to heal and racing in Lourdes kicking off on March 24th, it's without doubt a less than ideal start to the season for the American. We wish Neko all the best with the healing process and look forward to seeing him race on his self-designed bike.

Breaking fingers is annoying, wishing you a speedy recovery, as I'm excited to see the progress on the DH bike project.

Recovery? He's conducting an experiment to compare a regular pinky vs. a high-pivot pinky!

But seriously, best wishes to Mulally. Likeable guy, good to see him enjoying himself, and looking forward to more excellent coverage of this project.

Always good to regularly practice your crashing.

I'd imagine a real crash would have broken at least two fingers.

Come to Lourdes Neko. It's a place for "miracles". Your fingers will appreciate. See U there Wink

 @Chuckolicious
No matter how much I practice, it never gets any easier!

I hope that Finger has a Bmx Background!? Heal up soon Neko and shred that wonderful Bike you built with Frank!
  • 5 2
I think you mean...Due to his BMX background, he will heal up faster.
  • 7 2
@jason475: ..a bigger injury saved by an underlying BMX background

Did he broke it on high pivot or low pivot bike? I am missing this information Big Grin

Frank the Welder sorted that pinky out for him.
  • 7 0
Any news on how the tree is doing?
  • 6 0
The pinky is really the workhorse of fingers. Get well soon Neko.
  • 5 0
Unsung workhorse no doubt, but as a guy with a thumb in a cast since January 18 I have to say dont underestimate the value of the thumb

@dkendy1: feel your pain brother, good luck! Jan 21 for me, was supposed to come off today but non-union means at least another month…

broke my pinky in that same exact location and break in august. it took way longer than 3 weeks for full heal. hoping for the best for Neko

Just get him to stop practicing crashes, yeesh.
  • 3 0
He didn't crash, clipped a tree and didn't notice the finger under further down the track.

Dang, looks like Gwin will have to take up the mantle and ride the new Trek/Intense collab Mulally bike at Lourdes!

With all the winter testing and training, I think he'll still have the upper hand in Lourdes.

Plus, what better place in the world for miraculous healings??

“So.. have you heard about Neko’s pinkie?” It seems like content so thought provoking/conversation-worthy should come with a “might want to sit down, first” warning. This is probably why other action sports won’t cover news of this caliber.

been doing a lot…true that, busy dude
  • 3 2
I hope he'll heal up in time for the big races.

Got a question though. Why does everybody abbreviate his name as "Neko" if his name is Nicholas? Where does the e come from?
  • 2 0
 Maybe he's part japanese? Lol
  • 3 0
Family nickname since he was a kid, but when he steps out of line, we sometimes call him Nicholas haha
  • 1 0
@captain23: I meant why is it "Neko" and not "Nico"
  • 3 0
Is his name Nicholas? I've only heard Neko.
  • 3 0
@Muscovir: No spell check as a kid
  • 2 0
So your saying Neko Mulally has a beard worthy of playing Grizzy Adams And he hurt his pinky!
  • 2 0
I'd give you a fist bump Neko, but...heal up and slay it!
  • 2 0
rode northstar with a broken index finger, that crap is annoying
  • 2 1
So, Pinkbike.. How long does it take to realize that there's a new edit from the Athertons?
  • 2 0
the one with the guy with the bmx background and shoes?
  • 2 0
Time to design a better hand
  • 3 0
 Take my strong hand.
  • 2 1
If he really is racing again in 2-3 weeks, that is freaking hardcore!!!
  • 1 0
Ugh! Done that. No joke on the vibrations.
  • 2 1
Suggest you run those new Tech 4 levers
  • 3 2
High pivot bike breaks fingers. Do not buy.
  • 1 0
Rest up Neko. It's going to be a great season.
  • 1 0
he also got a previously busted scaphoid and early radiocarpal djd
  • 1 0
Now let's see a review of that new Pivot bike...
  • 1 0
Just need a high pivot fork and you'll be reet.
  • 1 0
Just cut it off, problem solved.
  • 1 0
Did it happen on high pivot or low pivot version of the frame?
  • 1 0
Bummer, wonder if it was the same tree in the preride video?
  • 2 1
 what vibrations
  • 3 4
Something tells me that’s a “boxer” break of the metacarpal bone in the hand. I have that exact cast on my hand now after catching a tree with the pinky knuckle.
  • 4 0
@ERG: I had that 2 months ago, my question was what are the vibrations
  • 2 1
@bozomichael: I’m assuming he means vibrations from exercising.
  • 4 0
 Vibrations while riding the bike.
  • 6 0
Small bump chatter. Maybe he can get the finger set up more supple with coil and a high single pivot idler.
  • 3 2
The vibrations from braking bumps, roots, rocks, buttplug etc. Makes your hands hurt after a while if you do a bunch of riding after having some time off and presumably if you break a finger
  • 7 0
@ERG: The picture of the broken pinky finger tells me otherwise Wink
  • 2 0
@ERG: No it's not. A boxer fracture is the knuckle at the base of the finger. My misaligned pinky from a similar tree strike is the evidence.
