Sea Otter Classic Announces Cancellation of April Event with Plans to Reschedule

We have received official word that the Sea Otter Classic won't be running as scheduled in Monterey April 16-19, 2020. Organizers say they will announce new dates by the middle of next week.

After a thorough review of the coronavirus threat, we’ve decided to reschedule April’s Sea Otter Classic. Additionally, People for Bikes and Sea Otter Classic will reschedule the Bicycle Leadership Conference.

We are coordinating with local authorities to determine the best dates to host the 2020 Sea Otter Classic and Bicycle Leadership Conference. We anticipate announcing those dates by the middle of next week.

Information regarding registration refunds and rollovers will be posted on our website once the new dates have been finalized.

Thank you again for your understanding and support during these challenging times.

 Excellent. Was thinking the same thing (I'm in Monterey). Vendors just set up along the road, people can still demo bikes in Fort Ord / Toro Park. We contact CCCX and see about doing the races anyway...

 Unbelievably on these dates, I'm driving down the west coast, staying in san jose twice , and my daughter's looking at a uni near Monterey . Didn't even know Seaotter was on ..

 It was a good marketing choice that try didn't continue the color schemes from the D3. I guess 'Corona Red' wouldnt have sold very well. (Yes, that was actually a color for the D3)

Ya’ll should probably cancel all future events and sit inside while ordering pizza to be delivered by the autonomous Domino’s van. Theres plenty of shitty shows to keep you entertained.  There's talks about it already. EWS as well. It's tough when athletes and teams are trying to travel and they may or may not be allowed to re-enter their own countries or be allowed in to countries where races are. I honestly would be surprised if they DON'T cancel races at this point.

 When one of your biggest sponsors says they're not coming this is kind of the only option beyond just canceling it. So I guess I'm glad they're not canceling and just postponing. There's talk of canceled races as well. People just need to wash their hands.

 @toesonthenose2: I never usually drink them but have been enjoying the 24oz 'Familiar' cans and even some quart bottles. The font and color scheme is exquisite and the beer isn't as horrible-tasting as I used to think. I don;t F with those clear fratboy bottles tho. It's just great to be alive, virus-free for now, and drinking cold beer! On the street because the police have given up on enforcement around here.

 I wonder what happens with the trailer camping spots if it gets canned for a while? Getting a spot for this year was insane. I logged in at 9am to the website and by 9:03 they were sold out.

 I would vote for cancelling all 2019 reservations with a full refund. Open camping reservations for 2020 in June as usual. I didn't get my usual spot this year anyway so I might be a little biased. Sooo far away from the hot water showers.

 The numbers are low right now due to the fact so few cases and you get full medical care. If mass cases show up your quality of medical care will drastically go down thus death rates will go up. No worries it was created to eliminate the old and weak and slow climate change. Just look at the pollution levels dropping in China.

 Smart sauce. There's a difference between panic (bad) and precaution (good). It's unclear what things will look like a month and a half from now. It takes a lot of planning and money from all involved to make something like Sea Otter happen, and making the call now rather than later allows brands, teams, and event organizers time to plan.

 @jrocksdh: Nah they're actually cancelling a bunch of concerts and events. The issue is that healthy people can contract the virus and walk around with mild symptoms or no symptoms at all and spread it to sick or elderly people

 If people really think this is blown out of proportion they should really consider what is going on worldwide. They closed access to Mecca. Think about that. For the Muricans, Mecca is like the Super Bowl of religion minus the Bud Light commercials. So yeah not as good as your Super Bowl but maybe more popular.
