Video: Brendan Fairclough Rides A Crazy Steep Rock Slab in a World's First Descent

(Riding at 11:15)

bigquotesSomething completely different for you this week. Riding this insanely steep rock slab I spotted as I was driving back from the World Cup last month. As we found out, this thing is beyond what is possible to ride down. There was just not enough grip to ride it in a controlled manner.

I had such high hopes that we could climb it and get some of the most amazing drone and Go Pro clips but it just never happened. The weather was not on our side. We had fog and rain, the two worst possible conditions we could have come up against. Rain to make this insane slab one more slippery and fog to screw up all our amazing clips.

All thing aside, it was still such an amazing experience and adventure, no regrets at all. We still came out with a smile on our faces and some pretty good clips for the gram. haha.

Only 50 seconds of riding (11:18-12:08 ) in a 15+ minute video is a total slab in the face.

Seems like you’ve lost your marble — this video rocks!

A 50 second slab in the face - and a mighty slab it was. Yikes!!!

I would like to see more adventure videos like this from Pinkers as well as the pros

You kidding? That was the gnarliest shit. What a maniac.

@brianpark: Kinda trippy that you mention Tippie — I just referred to him in my Pinkbike / Crankworx MTB rap-poem yesterday, saying:

“I awoke the next morning to an extra chipper Tippie,
We hopped on the gondola, the peak was kinda nippy,”

The full lyrics can be found at the link below...just make sure to read it to an old school hip hop beat. But maybe I’ll just have to record it soon for the full and proper tall-skinny-white-guy-engineer-rapper effect =P : www.pinkbike.com/news/tech-briefing-a-helmet-holder-linkage-protector-new-apparel-and-more-september-2022.html

@brianpark: Uhhh, woooosh? “lost your marble” was a play on “lost your marbles”, jokingly referring to disagreeing with Tippie’s sarcastic/spoof comment...also referring to marble ‘slabs’ per Tippie’s slab comment. Marble slabs are also mined extensively in that exact area of the Italian Alps. “This video rocks” was likewise a play on the slab of rock he is riding down.

@brianpark: Sorry, I guess I’m on another level of refined subtlety in word play, especially when it comes to rocks. I’ll try to dial it back next time and pick rock puns and sarcasm that are more obvious, while chiseling away at the advanced geology rhetoric, all in an effort to be more inclusive — especially as inclusivity is the bedrock of Pinkbike and its comments section. If I’m not inclusive, just remind me in a gravelly voice. Hey, see, I told you I could do it! (pick rock...chiseling...bedrock...gravelly...) =P

this isn't a riding video. it's an exeriential video. You don't watch it like a shreddit, you watch it to see what it really takes to ride something like this....and that is a fuck ton of sweat and effort for a very short, very difficult descent. anyone that has built a trail by themselves understands the ratio here.

I liked it. It takes you through how the whole thing unfolds. Not a 20 second video on Instagram. I wish more bike videos or Team videos during the world cup had more storyline like they used to.

Super sick!!! Looks remarkably similar to a rock I rode half way round the world in Washington. I know how scary that feels and how hard it is to make it look good on camera. Mad props! www.pinkbike.com/video/543439

At risk of being not very hip, I can never understand why these riders always seem to wear crap, inappropriate shoes for climbs, track walks etc. Shirley a suitable hiking shoe or boot was obviously needed here, not a pair of flats? They didn’t just stumble across it, there was a plan, of sorts.

…..I’m 52. Do please excuse my looking at this from a practical point of view.

@dolface: I left that in there hoping for a comment. Just waiting now for an outdoor/wilderness article referencing beavers, to pay homage to another spoof film.

The rubber on a lot of flats is the same as approach shoe rubber, which is what climber use to approach climbs.
  • 5 0
Yup 5:10 shoes started out with climbing rubber on soles I believe. So while flats not good for trail hiking very good at slab walking.
  • 5 0
Anecdotally, my Freeriders are my preferred shoes for working steep roofs when my work boots don't have enough grip.
  • 13 0
I can indeed confirm that there was no plan. At all. Only to get to the top and get a drone shot
  • 1 0
@beneyh: at least the thick mist and sopping rain gave the footage a sense of atmosphere. . Although I suspect you’d have preferred that hike in dry, clear blue skies. I did wonder when you slipped how far you were going to go down that slope!

Pretty sure that's not a world first. It looks remarkably similar to the slab Rick Astley rode back in 2018... http://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ

Just a matter of time before someone works out a toprope setup and starts working fearures like this for first cordless descents.

Matter of tine until someone builds a shitty tabletop jump on there

Most rock climbers use ropes! I guess this could be labeled free bike soloing or something. Looks like it's definitely 4th class terrain (can be hiked but ropes recommended since a fall could be fatal) if you go by the grading scale. My brain can't help imagining if the brakes picked that moment to have an unexpected mechanical failure.Truly terrifying.

A dropper failure would also be another interesting challenge

I love this...so many times when you travel, certainly when a passenger you can see more, or train...you see places "I'd love to ride that, or see someone do it" and he did it, super cool Brendan!
  • 7 0
This was awesome! Brendog captures the freedom of doing what he wants on his bike. He always puts out quality and sincere riding.
  • 7 1
Guys bike tumbled a hundred feet down the slab into some shrubs and he goes and pushes it back up and rides it. Scott bikes tough as nails

I was gonna say, such a testament to the durability of that bike set up!
