Video: Jackson Goldstone's Red Bull Hardline Course Preview with Commentary

Feb 21, 2024 at 8:54
by Sarah Moore

As if the course wasn't hard enough without talking the whole way down! You'd almost believe Jackson Goldstone was riding a regular track based on how calm he is throughout.

For year one of a hardline course, I think the dig crew has nailed this one 100%. It’s so different than wales but still way rowdier than anything 99% of us could check off. It has its unique hardline personality, that’s what makes this series special. Insane work dig team.

Nice call. I too am very impressed with this course.

Agree. The full course preview puts it into better prospective. I'm sure the tech sections near the top of the course would be wild in person

Yea I think people forget how much the Wales course evolved over the years. The original track from 2014 looks nothing like the current version. If they keep coming back here I'm sure the same will happen with this one. Nothing is ever 100% perfect on the first try.

I think you might be giving 1% of us too much credit

The keyboard warriors complaining at the start that its to park like. The speed in the middle and last section is insane, I would love to see said keyboard warriors ride this course.

In all of the content from riders and spectators all you hear is how much the riders love the track. The fellas are going MACH CHICKEN up top, the ladies like Gracey are fully sending. It’s so cool to see.

It's got the Maydena bike park twist to it. Gnarly, big jumps, and a few extra spicey bits in it.
  • 1 0
Its wild how varied the different parts of the track are. Think it gives it a neat feel.

Agree with this. Seeing the t2b made me change my mind about it. The speed is high, its got a bit of everything, and a few of those drops are much bigger looking than I thought from the side shot videos. I initially thought "this course is small for hardline" but this changed my mind.
  • 1 0
It also looks much narrower than a lot of pro DH tracks I’ve seen, which must make it more difficult as well

@CustardCountry: hardline seems to be as much about riding "the" line well instead of a wide find a line style racing. Both are fun but the size and seriousness of the hardline tracks are really more exciting to watch. I'd love to walk one and really understand how monsterous these things are. Got to respect the riders that can hold it together down these size obstacles.

@cougar797: I think we also have to keep in mind that the best riders in the world tend to make even big gnarly things look fairly easy. I know its Hardline, but making a course that actually looks "hard" to these dudes (and ladies) would probably border on irresponsible.
  • 2 0
@sino428: Ooh 100%. Things that scare these people are just different not even remotely close to my idea of riding my dh bike. That's why I said want to "walk" the course not ride.
  • 1 0
@cougar797: All the corners are gone now so the 'main line' is no longer the best for racing.
  • 1 0
@sino428: if you watch BKs video about testing the track few weeks ago you will see the riders suggested some changes to make the track safer and the crew made it happen and if Im not mistaken there were no injuries so far with the exception of last jump testing which was eventually also shortened.

Jackson: *complains about blown out berms*

Also Jackson: *Schralps every corner*
  • 22 1
He's not complaining he loves a blown out berm!
  • 18 0
I wouldn't call it complaining, but I did chuckle when he mentioned that the berms were getting blown out.
  • 15 1
Reminds me of a joke I say when someone complains that it smells. I say: “it wasn’t before you got here”.
“ Jackson, berms were fine before you got here”

 Just an observation WWWAAMMMP !
  • 1 0
I said out loud "I wonder why?!" hahaha
  • 60 1
Going to one of the biggest jump in the world and throwing one of the sickest whip is a whole new era of talent! Jackson you are THE MAN! Big respect!
  • 11 0
When i saw how sideways he went on that, I just thought for sure he wasnt gonna be able to pull it back and keep it together. Insane
  • 25 0
@sooner518: maddest talent in a while. Already the world's best currently. Would have won the WC sans appendicitis.
  • 6 1
he's the James Stewart of MTB, can just make the bike do whatever he want's!
  • 5 0
@BenPea: he is one crazy talent and so young too.
Can't wait for 24 season.
So many riders back and Asa racing juniors, maybe already the next massive talent. 2,1 up against Jackson at 16 and doing backflips!
  • 1 0
@sooner518: I had to replay it a few times, would love to see it from the side.

@betsie: It should be such a good time for the fans right now in DH...if it weren't for a giant elephant in the room

@gnarnaimo: I am willing to give discovery more time. They put in place some good stuff last year, some not so good too, they also showed willingness to change and adapt, admit they had some things wrong.
Having 2 ex racers and those responsible for the success and boom of enduro right high up can't be a bad thing.
Rob was amazing and raw, the new crowd are trying to bring more sponsors into the sport with a slightly less raw approach. Let's see how they get on in a couple of years.
  • 3 1
@betsie: uhmmm... Jackson double backflipped when he was 15. So...
  • 1 1
@HeliumSoda: He sure did and had more skill than most of us by the time he was out of nappies!
2 young rippers, its gonna be interesting for sure.
Really cant wait for this season, so many racers hungry and the top of the mens field looks stacked, the Frenchies keeping their powder pretty dry in the off season.
Really cant wait for Fort William.
  • 2 0
@betsie: Jackson, Williams, and Dunne are all U23. Crazy!
  • 2 1
@HeliumSoda: Oisin O Callaghan is 20, Ethan Craik and Jakob Jewett are 21.
Pinky, Hauser etc. The top 5 juniors at Pal Arinsal last year would were quick enough to beat the 20th place Elite.

The sport is in such an interesting and exciting place just now.
  • 5 1
@betsie: I was 100% in the same boat as you, until the new subscription announcement happened in December. If us Canadians have to sign up for the same subscription we are talking paying $35 a race if we can pay per month, or $60 a race if the subscription is annual. It's just gone too far. The subscription to GCN+ was reasonable and I would happily pay for that again. But $35-60 to watch a a single, very questionable quality, broadcast on a screen.. That's absurd.
  • 2 0
@betsie: And Asa Vermette could be troubling top 10 senior times before too long. There's something about that kid.
  • 1 0
@gnarnaimo: In Europe it'll cost 40-50 for the whole shebang. Not too painful. But for North America they've really f*cked it. I'd shout conspiracy if it wasn't clearly just madness/stupidity.

He is a hell of a commentator - had me laughing with him at the end! Damn fine job gentlemen!
  • 23 0
He is amazing. Ridiculous to think he is only 20!
  • 6 1
This kid might just amount to something after all!
  • 42 2
Saw more of the track in that 4 minutes than the past 17 hours with BK!
Thank you Jackson and Laurie tup
  • 41 3
 Looks like a flow trail.
  • 5 0
Oh yeah, just keep it open to the public hahaha
  • 1 0
hahaha amazing comment from the bike park themselves
  • 32 0
Whilst id like to say BK for the win i think JG is going to take it.
  • 2 0
There's a lot of fast folks at this one! And it's a interesting course that might suit a heavier rider vs. a light one (given the need to maintain speed and scrub jumps). I'm curious to see some times!
  • 15 0
such a rush to watch those guys rail those corners and take flight with ease. so stylie....just catching my breath now
  • 12 1
Has anyone notice the whip at the last jump!!!?? Seriously, that was absolutely insane. How can you be that confy at that speed and with that huge gap!!! Goldstone is pure magic on a bike.
  • 7 0
it could be that for these guys doing a whip is more comfortable than simply straight airing. When your in the air that long its hard to stay balanced. I know from snowboarding that for most people adding some kind of grab or even a spin for even more skilled riders is easier than a simple straight air. The whip for these guys is likely similar to a safety grab for snowboarders.
  • 3 0
@sino428: agree, as a very amateur jumper ie. freakin scared, I find tweaking a little sideways helps me fly with a little bit more balance. When I try to jump straight, I just end up dead sailor and landing awkward.
  • 1 0
@sino428: thats actually the best advice i got when i was actively trying to do jumps i was uncomfortable with. even just doing a little turn of the bars forces you to be looser, which is exactly what you need when you're scared
  • 13 1
...can't believe I've watched little dude go from Strider bike to what he's become - amazing job Jackson. Amazing job Dad.

What about mum, she must of done something?

My office chair armrests are worn out from brake checking every corner and every jump!
  • 4 0
Haha I was tucking my chin into my keyboard Big Grin
  • 3 0
I'm sure I looked awfully silly to my office mates with my head leaning from side to side with each turn....
  • 9 0
Thanks for sharing that. I enjoy both head cam and the follow cam. Great footage
  • 9 0
 that last jump is insanity
  • 8 0
Wow, it looks like something out of a video game, great.
  • 2 0
Exactly. So good. The race is going to be batshit.
  • 6 0
Finally a T to B video that does this rowdy track justice! Leave it up to the party bois to make it look easy.
  • 7 0
Knowing that he's operating at about 80% the whole way down is amazing.
  • 6 0
That open part is a dream

last jumps = BUTTER
  • 6 0
Knees weak, palms are sweaty after watching that.
  • 5 0
If you only had one shot?
  • 1 0
 @gnarnaimo: Mom's spaghetti
  • 2 0
If it was dry and dusty in that video it's going to be even drier tomorrow. Max temps today at Maydena were close to 35 degrees, and the wind was insane, gusting over 70km/h when I was riding home from work.
Tomorrow should be a cool 20 degrees, but the forecast westerly wind of 25km/h would be blowing rider's left to right across the last big gap. Fingers crossed some rain arrives, but the forecast is only a 25% chance of less than 1mm.
Race day conditions look perfect, sunny, 24 degrees and low wind. The hardest part is going to be deciding where to spectate @maydenabikepark haven't made the uplift access very clear. I can see that bike uplifts are booked out (boo!) but is there separate spectator uplift?
  • 1 0
@dsut4392 how's it look today? Any overnight rain and if so did it make it through the canopy?
  • 2 0
@Mitchvg: It's all done and dusted now Smile It got a reasonable amount of rain on Friday, mostly up top, and was still a bit greasy in practice on Saturday. The bottom half of the course was a complete dust bowl.
  • 4 0
Definitely one of the best course previews. I can't the speed they hit those corners on Baxters highway. Insane!
  • 2 0
Very different character to the Welsh track. It seems very fast! It looks a little tamer ( I’m know it’s not! )More chance burning your arse a snowball than me ever riding something like that. Where’s the blue run
  • 1 0
The blindness of the jumps and drops on this are insane. You have to be fully committed or die...
  • 6 0
 He's WAAAAAY too calm.
  • 4 0
 Baxter's highway looking faaaaast
  • 3 0
I love when he starts yelling over the wind noise!

Generational talent. He continues to deliver the goods!

Wow, Hardline gets more extreme every year. :-)
