A first look at the new downhill track in Szczyrk, Poland where the second round of the UCI DH World Cup will take place this weekend. It won't be this smooth for long, right?

This felt like a loading screen of the level I'm about the play in a video game
  • 7 0
They should have put some GTA music over it, with photos of riders in the corner of the screen. Also, hi Tor

Yeh, but not in a good way. Hard to understand the track just an irritating tease, don't waste our time until track walk videos from the teams.

People right now: What is this? A pump track for ants?

People after the race: DH racing is too dangerous, they are not paid enough for a track like that.

Haha. Did you all learn nothing from Loudenville last year? As John Hall said on the Vital podcast: this fresh style of track lets the downhill “artists” (pros) create a track in all the fresh sections. They will burn in the lines and ruts and it will be a completely different track by race day.
  • 9 0
 100%, can't wait!
  • 9 0
I think we can count on some weather-related fun too.

Will be interesting to see how many ruts develop on all that wood.
  • 3 0
Definitely looks like there are a quite a few natural sections in the instagram photo reel. Those will get chewed up nicely after a few practice sessions.
  • 5 0
@jayacheess: There are, all steep places are natural. The camera does not do it justice really.
  • 1 0
My first thoughts as well when I saw images and video of the track, that will be destroyed after first practise

Honestly guys, I have seen this track in person and this vid shows nothing. Judging the track based on it is impossible. The wooden features are mostly in wet places, there are little springs here and there and there are places which are wet 365 a year. Especially the finish wood is really a bridge over a swamp, it just had to be there. The jumps and berms are on the flatter sections and all steep sections are natural currently covered in loam since they are 100% fresh just leaves removed from the ground and some stumps trimmed. In my opinion they used close to 100% of the slope's potential. Of course the place is not alpine-steep but is close. It will be good.

@lkubica: is this new track based/has a common start with Bestyja? I think the preview shows parts of that trail, but I'm not entirely sure.
  • 3 0
@transportguy: The very beginning is Bestyja, but later they are close but mostly separate, except few spots.
  • 1 0
 @lkubica:

Well said..!

Can't wait to see the first guys come down the mountain!
  • 1 0
@lkubica: thanks for the insight, looking forward to it!
  • 1 0
@lkubica: Do you know the approx length of the track and elevation loss?
  • 2 0
@reks: 400m, 2.5 minute track according to Downtime podcast
  • 1 0
@BenPea: It's 400m indeed, pity I forget to turn the strava on when walking it so I do not know the distance. Most probably below 3 min.

I love how the UCI shows it as “Round 002” at the start of the video. I can’t wait for round 100. It’ll be a doozy.

They will come out. Just give r time.

 @rockyflowtbay: it’ll be like A-line in August.

@paulwatt: those are bomb craters more so than rocks. Unhappy hands....

just watch BK’s latest video for sooo much gnarlier tracks in Czarna Góra. It would be better perhaps if WC was held there…

A DH race it will be...don't fool yourself. The track will be uncovered by Sunday. Can't wait to see what the rubber traffic unearths. That being said...if you don't have a full quiver of DH skills and can't jump with the best of them, you're out.
  • 16 3
Looks like was built by the backstreet boys

It will be needed to stay out of the craters that will form in the main line of most turns.
  • 5 0
Okay Poles, how do you pronounce Szczyrk?

And what was this video? I might be spoiled by the content produced here by Pinkbike and by, ahem, past broadcasters, but a First Look with no narration, no commentary, no signs of human life? I know there were trail builders, can't you interview them? Context is obviously lacking when you show a bunch of barely panning images like the welcome video on the television at your ski resort vacation.
  • 6 1
 translate.google.com/?sl=pl&tl=en&text=szczyrk&op=translate
press the speaker button on google translate to hear. Rough approximation: shchirk

In regards to the video, we've been asking the organisers for a proper course preview for the past few weeks on social media, but to no avail
  • 3 0
Sh-ch-ir-k, with "ir" pronounced like in dirt should be close enough
You can find the whole track here

  • 5 0
Mate is mid-track walk currently and yeah there's park stuff, but there's rocks, loose sections, trees, etc... there's even a tree in the middle of the track where you can land left or right of it...

One of the boardwalks is like a 3 lane motorway Big Grin
  • 2 0
 Trees?? Are they crazy?!
  • 11 2
Most of these comments won't age well! ;-)
  • 4 0
If we cared about aging well, we wouldn't be into downhill
  • 2 0
I am going to enter on my road bike and prove you wrong.
  • 1 0
@EliotJackson: Didn't see you out there ............ Leogang?
  • 12 4
Looks like it'll be umm... how do I put this nicely... fast?
  • 26 3
The idea is that the track is soft and raw, so it gets rutted in and shaped by the rapid onslaught of traffic it's about to get. By Sunday it will be a totally different trail.
  • 2 0
@drakefan705: It looked very loose in some shots, like it's ready to get blown apart. We'll probably have a different track half-way through practice. Rain coming too, going to be fun...
  • 1 0
@gemma8788: Those steep sections are going to turn into "trust the rut" sections real quick.
  • 1 0
@drakefan705: So you're saying this track is a work in progress. They just need 300 riders to pitch in.
  • 18 11
I recon someone could win this one on an enduro bike.
  • 21 10
 I recon your wrong
  • 4 0
Maybe Martin Maes will give it a go?
  • 3 0
 I'm thinking slope bike ftw..
  • 2 0
 How'd that prediction go?
  • 1 3
@Point1Athletic: apart from about 30 seconds in wood it wasn't good. Even a flat square 90 turn with hard pedal out. Sorry that's what I'd call enduro, it's not steep enough to call it DH.
  • 1 1
@bat-fastard: ;-) you're more than welcome to your opinion my friend!
  • 1 0
@bat-fastard: did it not have the same average gradient as Fort William!
Steep rewards riders with free speed from mistakes whereas some flatter turns rewards riders who can turn well. 3 to 10 pedal strokes rewards riders who have been on the pedals on the off season.
How many crashes did we see from riders trying to find and carry speed on lines, remove the free speed and the timing becomes more interesting. Bruni nearly won because of a mistake into a flatter section which cost Ronan his 1 second advantage (you can see the mistake in his helmet cam run).
Personally I like a good mix of steep, rocky, loose, bike park. Leogang next, it's probably the same average gradient and has some very groomed bike park stuff so must not be downhill either.
  • 1 1
@betsie: don't really rate fortbill either tbh. Can't wait for Champery to return, hopefully get another day at it in 6 weeks time but there's race in August so hopefully not closed.
  • 1 0
@bat-fastard: some boy not liking DH tracks. Must be tough being you.
Champery is European champs this year.
Must sort out my passport.
  • 1 0
@Point1Athletic: nope, fussy bugger at my age lol roll on Les Gets WC and pleney steeps Smile
  • 6 0
hopefully itll be another loudenville situation but im not massively confident
  • 2 1
Won’t be as good loudenville or
Snowshoe but it will be a good one.
  • 2 0
@bulletbassman: haha those two tracks are very different. Loudenvielle is great and snowshoe is shit (hated by just about every rider, but oddly loved by biased American fans). if this one lands in the middle it'll still be better than Fort William
  • 1 0
@davetrumpore: always made for good racing. Lots of different winners, interesting line choices by top riders, often shook up the standings. Sure I’m a bit biased towards east coast rocks and spectating in person but as far as racing goes it was a good stop that will be missed. Venues like ft bill and snowshoe are sick because they are so different in terrain, culture, atmosphere. Loudenville was just probably the most interesting new track we’ve had since champerry.

I ride this place every summer and it's fricken amazing. Fantastic bike hike and uplift and superior singletrack XC across beskidy and downhill runs from the summit. they will also be holding event across the mountains in Bielsko Biala at the Enduro Trails which is also a superb network of trails. Cant wait for the racing!
  • 4 0
With all the rain forecast and a fresh track a lot of mud is going to be dragged on to all the timber features. Seems a bit of an oversight?
  • 5 1
Looks like a fun track and deceptively smooth right now. Rain in the forecast so it could be a other fest...Chicken wire on the wood I wonder?
  • 3 2
 Wire made out of chickens??
  • 4 0
@beermtb: That sounds metal as f*ck
  • 2 0
Roughed up or scored with a chain saw?
  • 6 1
A ride park that is a DH course, glad I experienced DH in it's early decades was much more interesting and raw.
  • 5 0
As the Doom Guy would put it: Rip 'n' tear.
  • 16 11
Looks about as gnarly as a bmx track
  • 11 1
Be my guest and jump a few doubles on a modern day BMX supercross track…..

 DH Velodrome
  • 5 1
The track picks look pretty sweet. Can't wait to see how beaten up it gets and how wild it really is at world cup speed.
  • 4 0
Riders on track walk saying don't listen to PB comments from folk not there, the track is seemingly looking sick.
  • 4 0
Did I see wood to wood jump - that is a new one. In the wet it will be rad.
  • 1 0
yea, saw that. sheesh. def a wood drop to slippery wood berm/takeoff of the next thing, followed immediately by another wood thing.

get your tweezers out, gonna be pulling splinters!
  • 5 0
All the wood on this track is on places which are notoriously wet/swampy. So they had no choice.
  • 2 0
It's pretty difficult to know how this track is going to work until people start riding it. Would look better with dirt jumps instead of wood but it's cool that it's a new track
  • 7 2
 Nice bike park.
  • 3 0
The same bike park and blue flow trail that Loudenvielle was last year?
  • 5 1
Looks great for a mountain board track/tobogan!...
  • 5 1
Nice, world cup race down a black jump line...
  • 2 1
It's not really my cup of tea for a WC, but I guess it gives all the riders a chance to shine on a different course style. Maybe it will pull in a few more punters as jumping is more exciting to watch then rock smashing.

5 rocks and 9 roots, sweet.
  • 6 0
I don't think you can count...CLEARLY there are 6 rocks... lol

This kind of comments never age well
  • 5 2
How many single crowns we gonna see?
  • 5 1
 SlopeDH
  • 7 4
Poles know how to get it done. Great track.
  • 6 4
You guys sound just like my entitled 5 year old nephew - it's good no one in here pays to watch anyway.
  • 3 1
I hope it cuts up, because right now it looks like a blue trail with some black features on.
  • 3 0
I wonder if Phil Atwill will have a go at it on a Hardtail.....
  • 4 1
Nice park/jump line, but where is the DH part?
  • 1 0
The same park line/blue flow trail that Loudenvielle was last year?
  • 1 1
Any tips on how to access the broadcast in ways other than the official overpriced streaming options? Heard a rumour some handy link had been thrown around but can’t find anything.

Looking pretty mellow, maybe we will see some riders on a single crown?
  • 4 1
Single crown i dont believe… but enduro bikes with double crown 100% maybe
  • 4 2
Somebody ordered pancakes I just sip the Szczyrk
  • 2 1
I´d expect this kind of track in Austria, surely not in Poland, but I guess it will develop a lot during the weekend.
  • 3 2
So the course doesn't feature any of the rocky sections BK rode in his video? Snoozefest....
  • 3 0
He rode in Czarna Gora, which is about 4 hours away. Probably the gnarliest bike park in Poland
  • 1 0
@pooceq: ah cool and yeah made fort Williams look like a blue run! Smile
  • 2 0
 Loam Style
  • 6 5
 Lame style
  • 4 2
@neimbc: bet ya its still way to hard for the likes of us, we don’t understand just how steep these trails are and how fast these guys are hauling.
  • 3 1
 @gabiusmaximus: you’d be surprised dude
  • 2 0
@gabiusmaximus: the other day i went on a trail that was hardly steep at all and i still made it up to 45mph in no time so these guys being crazy as they are are going allot faster on these huge jumps.
  • 1 0
@Cooper09: I would be surprised. Cos I know the hill and it's not that steep compared to some other wc tracks I have ridden (slowly)
  • 3 0
@Cooper09: Sure, but watching people send huge jumps is what darkfest and rampage are for. I wanna see dh racing.
  • 5 3
 Yeah! Bike Park races!
  • 2 1
I wouldn't JUMP to conclusions yet
  • 4 2
 looks kinda flat.
  • 1 0
movement of a subject in video is nice
  • 5 3
 Hardline for U10..
  • 1 0
Random question. Is John Hall still Aaron Gwin’s mechanic?
  • 2 0
No, I think I saw that he works for Intense now in some expanded role (not simply wrenching for the pros but also doing R&D and product management, or something like that), so he stayed with Intense when Gwin left for Crestline.
  • 1 0
@thekaiser: I forget which off-season interview I hear where AG basically said he tried to lure him away from Intense, but couldn’t match what Intense pays him, John has mouths to feed, etc.
  • 1 0
Anyone know if the finals will be Saturday or on Sunday this weekend?
  • 4 0
 saturday - qualies + semis
sunday - finals
  • 2 1
I prefer natural tracks, without too much work on curves and jumps
  • 1 0
The start hut kinda looks like a big outhouse. She’s a beaut Clark.
  • 2 0
 Wood Cup Round 2
  • 2 4
To all those complaining it is a blue flow trail..............................it's a blue flow trail with jumps actually.
