Living amidst the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest, a day with cloudy skies and fog so thick you can't see the house across the street isn't abnormal. When Jeremy called asking if I wanted to come out filming, I thought to myself, doesn't he know that it’s December? That it’s been snowing for two days and you can't see more than 15 feet in front of you? Do I really want to leave my warm house and haul 30 pounds of camera gear up and down the mountainside in these conditions? But I couldn't say no to Jeremy’s endless psych, and I knew that if he had something he wanted to film it would be special. I layered on thermal and rain gear in a haze that morning and hauled my equipment out the door to meet Jeremy and Pat.

As we drove up the old logging road to reach the trails Jeremy had been building, it looked pretty grim. I was thankful to be sitting in a typical oversized, big-tired Squamish truck, or else we wouldn't have been able to get through the densely packed snow. We parked precariously in a snow drift and ventured into the forest, which on the coast, with its heavy coatings of moss, soaring old growth trees, and twisting roots always appears enchanted. Opposed to the road, the ground was covered in only a faint layer of snow, the massive trees successful once again at keeping the nasty weather out of our playground. Psych was high. The boys were ready to start riding.

Jeremy had built several features on the mountainside in the fall and had hit all of them successfully but one. The infamous jump had punished him in November with a crash into a tree and a month of recovery. He told me that he’d save that one for the end of the day.

Squamish has been undergoing a big shift from a mining and logging town to an outdoor recreation hub. The lumber mills and mines have been closing down and in their place mountain bikers, skiers, and climbers have been moving in. Jeremy built this trail upon an abandoned mining zone. Their bikes roll past a moss covered mine cart and old mine entrance that appear camouflaged in the photos, slowly being swallowed up by the forest.

We spent the day filming and riding above and below the snow line, in and out of the rolling fog. Jeremy was right, this trail was something special, worth the cold, wet mountainside slog to capture on film.

And the fateful jump? Jeremy hit it, landing softly in that December Loam, narrowly threading the trees. We returned to our warm houses, happy and injury-free.

I think the video player works for most phones.. maybe this is their version of that "Pinkbike App" think everyone wants haha... but yeah, it blows on computers

I look forward to seeing the vids pinkbike put on for us . Gutted I can no longer play them on my ipad. Come on pinkbike sort it out please
  • 1 0
I too am not having any problems. My guess is that those having the problems are suffering from old software or poor bandwidth; neither of which are a Pinkbike problem. Try updating all of your software; browser, OS, java and anything else. Or, just use Chrome - it works flawlessly.

I have an I pad and it works fine , only vids that don't work with me are the ones that involve flash player

Beautiful area, the problem with skidding and carving all that loam up on a trail straight down is ….extreme water erosion next year you will be able to name it the rut bin. Excellent display/film on how not to build and ride trails in the PNW. thanks for that

 ^^AMEN^^

sustainable trail building and riding just ain't cool enough for a lot of rad hardcore "builder"/riders out there...

Don't be bitching and whining cause you don't know where that trail is and don't have the skill to ride it. Stick to CBC and fawk off. Trail looks sick and nothing beats a fresh steep loan trail
  • 5 2
Totally agree andrew , for me riding down a fresh loamy , natural track is one of the greatest feelings in mountain biking... Me and my riding mates have made dozens of tracks like this , most of them you only hit a few times a year and they recover nearly fully in that amount of time. I understand that in a high traffic area this could make a some ruts but by the time it's been logged the last thing you will notice is a 4 inch rut made by bicycles.

Dont you just hate people who use the word loam! ya dude those trails were loaming hard today broby. Sustainable trails??? tree huggers get the hell outta here. Coming thru with brakes on jackin and spraying roost in your face. Its called trail maintenance. They should have built that mine shaft into a drop off. Then you could have called the movie Shaft- he's a bad motha shut up about loam. Pinky player no good on any device. Oh my devices are going crazy help meeeeeeee

Squamish is one of he best places to ride in all of BC! I do not know why they even have to say "Squamish does not suck.." I thought that was implied!
  • 3 0
Yeah, Squamish is sick! Can't wait for the summer!!
  • 6 2
just keep it quiet please, we do not need a "seymore, frome" repeat of trail "wanabegoodydobuilderf*ckers" to ride there and decide to pave it all for the good of the riding cause. shhhhhhhhhhhush. No there is no good riding there!.
  • 3 1
I agree Squamish suck.... you guys go on the shore , So I can ride relax in the week end
  • 12 2
Squamish is an amazing place to ride. I am always stoked to see a new trail. The loamers in this vid look spectacular. The pan down the steep realey captured the level of skill involved in comiting to that trail.

New player sucks. You have to wonder why they changed it, what was wrong with the old one?
  • 7 0

Great video! My frame-rate is terrible on my computer in HD or in fullscreen with the new player. PB, this needs fixing ASAP.

This is an honest question. Why should we, the mountain biking community, not be concerned about trails like the one shown in this video. This trail appears to be primarily a fall line trail with a very loose surface. It appears that this trail will create an erosion problem for the trail surface and put a lot of sediment in the nearby streams. This does not appear to have the low environmental impact we like to sell to land managers and the public. Please point out what I am missing.

This trail is an area slated for logging in the near future. Once the trees are cut, and machinery drives all over the terrain tearing apart the hillside, the impact of one strip of trail is the least of our concerns regarding erosion and environmental impact. I understand your point on a larger scale, and do agree in principal if unsustainable trails are built in fragile ecological areas. I also want to point out that much thought was put into where this fun fall line trail was built. Due to logistics of the trails location, it will not receive a high volume of traffic which really helps keep it loamy for those who ride it, while mitigating excess erosion.

I understand. Thanks for the information.

It hurts to say this.... but, I got all pumped when I saw the photos, then, nothing looks like it in the video.
I can't find those same angles in the video, its a shame, those were probably the best angles you could of shot from but no moving images from it. GREAT PHOTOS anyways, i am not beign sarcastic, I love em!
I will give you the benefit of the doubt that the shots went missing or something.
2:00 is a beautiful picture ill give you that one!
