Samsara made me ashamed to be human.

The sad disgusting realities of a rapidly expanding over-populated glutinous world. Eat up folks - lots more where that came from - just don't have a conscience or care in the world, about yourself or this planet.
  • 12 0
@neimbc i hope you don't mind, i had to share this video and i couldn't think of a better description so I used your words. It truly is a sick world that we live in. I try to find the beauty in it but sometimes it's hard.

 i think i'm vegetarian now

How can those people work at hellhole like that? Shit, this kind of a factory farming thing is disgusting. The food can be produced much more ethically... There are just too many people on this planet...
Reminds me of the McDonald's Chicken McNuggets vid. That video was just cruel, I think the employees at there were damn sadistic...
  • 8 0
@ercover - it's a great luxury deciding where to work. If you can choose your passion and align it with supporting yourself and your family you are really, really lucky... like 99.9% lucky.

OT Samsara and Baraka are really beautiful, inspirational films! Check them both out if you have an evening.

basically the only way to stop this sort of production is to offer more money for farms who do things humanly cause at the minute a lot of farmers really struggle and that leads to a lack of traditional farmers
  • 4 0
This isn't going anywhere. Most of us eat this kind of mass produced, hell farmed food and for that reason things are going to get worse before they get better. I watched it last week and felt physically sick. If we thought about the state of the world we live in as regularly as we should, we would all go insane.
  • 2 2
@JMHPB Yes, I do understand that. However I wouldn't be ready to cause unneeded suffering to anyone/anything just to get money.
Yes I know that this kind of a thinking is created by the western culture and I know I can't relate to those people. But I probably have more knowledge and principles than they do... And with the knowledge and values I have, I know I wouldn't do that. I know it's easy say but in my opinion man without principles is not a man. Those people who actually die because of hunger, are usually self-contained and they don't atleast from what I've heard work in these kind of factories. And the McDonalds video I saw while back was all about the money.

The problem is that there are more and more countries with growing economies that produce a high demand for cheap meat which is actually produced by only a handfull of very large companies. it is realatively easy to avoid supporting this kind of meat "mass production" by buying from your local butcher instead of the cheapest packet of something in the supermarket as well as staying clear of typical fast food chains. my point is, that kind of processing is a product of a world that is quickly getting bigger and where growing demands are met at the cost of decency.

not sure if i want a bacon cheese burger or a crispy chicken sandwich...
  • 12 0
The only thing to be appalled by in that video is the mistreatment of animals, the butchery part is exactly what your local butcher would do, it's just there are a hundred in one room.

Time for "In Vitro Meat" ..
  • 7 5
It blows my mind that you folks act so surprised by this. Deep down we all know this was going on. I would suggest you just forget you every watched it (like you probably will anyway) and go back to being naive in your perfect little world of blissful oblivion.

Samsara...interesting video. The real problem is not that the WORLD is overpopulated the problem is huge masses of people living in the SAME place (Big Cities). The world is HUGE plenty of land out there, more than enough for everyone. And im tired of people thinking that this is a result of "western culture", grow up.

City(Proper, city limits), Population, Country, Continent

1 Shanghai- 17,836,133 China Asia
2 Istanbul- 13,710,512 Turkey Europe/Asia
3 Karachi- 12,991,000[ Pakistan Asia
4 Mumbai- 12,478,447 India Asia
5 Moscow- 11,977,988 Russia Europe
6 São Paulo- 11,821,876 Brazil South America
7 Beijing- 11,716,000 China Asia
8 Tianjin- 11,090,314 China Asia
9 Guangzhou- 11,070,654 China Asia
10 Delhi- 11,007,835 India Asia
11 Seoul- 10,575,447 South Korea Asia
12 Shenzhen- 10,357,938 China Asia
13 Jakarta- 10,187,595 Indonesia Asia
14 Tokyo- 8,967,665 Japan Asia
15 Mexico City- 8,873,017 Mexico North America
16 Kinshasa Kinshasa - 8,754,000 Democratic Republic of the Congo Africa
17 Bangalore- 8,425,970 India Asia
18 New York City - 8,336,697 United States North America
19 London- 8,308,369 United Kingdom Europe

Convenience comes at a cost. Factory farming is a direct result of Big Cities.
  • 2 0
@ercover "just to get money" = "just to eat and feed your family" = "just to survive"

You're right that the people working in those factories don't die of hunger.... because they have jobs in the factory. Principles won't feed your kids.

Whatyousaid is right, the problem is urbanization, not that there are "too many people". But I'm sure ercover has a proposal to fix that too. Speaking of ethics....

Well, actually Earth is overpopulated. Yea there is this old thing that if people stand next to each other they would all fit in Los Angeles. But the problem is the ecological footprint which is the area it takes to produce food, process waste etc. per person. This is huge in developed countries. And because there are so many of us and we in developed countries comsume so much and produce waste so much, it means that there isn't enough food and water left for people in developing countries.
@bkm303 No, I don't have any miracle cure for this problem. And before the population growth can stop or even decrease in developing countries, they need better standard of living which brings education. The answer could be change in our ways of living in developing countries. We have to consume less. It can happen with small daily things. Like buying only the amount of food you can eat and choosing something like fruits and vegetables over hamburgers.
And to the food problem. Law can be effective like lets say for example in fishing. Our seas are being robbed. We should decrease the amount of this overfishing so that fish stockes could come back to what they used to be. Also it's good thing to invest in watering systems that don't waste so much water and not to use water that includes salt in watering fields, which ruins the land. These are just few examples.
@whatyousaid You are also right about the urbanization. But living in cities do have some pros too, so it's tricky.

 and that's why i'm vegetarian.

if anybody wants any great vegetarian recipes/words of encouragement, etc., message me. it's not hard at all to give up meat, and it's made me a much better cook. not to mention i lost and kept off 8-9 lbs of weight and still drink just as much beer...

MONSANTO... that is all I have to say. You think 'Samsara' is bad? haha If you dont know what Monsanto is, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND you take a minute to check it out/understand it. Its onnnnnlyy the beginning.
On the bike note sick videos! was looking forward to this all weekend.
  • 2 2
Am I the only who wasn't overly repulsed by that?

It looked like a fairly efficient process in which none of the animal was wasted. If the world only ate free ranged "happy" animals, there would be a shit ton less forest around. You people need to consider the fact that if we want to continue eating meat on the levels of which we enjoy, factory farming is essentially the only sustainable way to do so.

Want to help save the planet? Then don't bred, pass it on.
  • 1 0
I'm just glad they didnt show the chickens hanging from their feet being decapitated by a machine that only kills about 70 percent of them instantly , the rest just hang there slowly bleeding out... Truly depressing video , not so interested in dinner now.. And the fact that a huge amount of this stuff is wasted and not even eaten , mean while on the other side of the planet people go through the waste to find meals. The way we run this planet is horrific

Samsara is a story that must be told, but it's a bit unfair to include Costco in with the evil meat factory and Burger King. Yes buying in bulk looks gluttonous, but consider the carbon footprint reduction (packaging/shipping/gas used to drive to store). I won't preach, but Costco is surprisingly advanced when it comes to green/sustainability/sourcing/fair labor practices. Not perfect...but doing a pretty good job.
  • 1 0
good point but why was everything so big, surely you can't get through all that food in one week?
  • 2 0
Some people are gluttons and eat wayyyyy more than they should. Others buy and stash it away. I know lots of families with a whole freezer of Costco meat--lasts a long time. And small businesses and other small organized groups love shopping at Costco too.

Are we to think that the gal in the movie buying a whole cart full of toilet paper craps 5 times an hour? Hopefully not. She's probably stocking up so she doesn't have to make that purchase for a long, long time.
  • 1 0
Sad where they placed Costco right after the factory scene... They don't buy from factories like that and yeah there stuff does last for a while.
  • 1 0
no I understand the idea of stocking up, I mean all the food is on a larger scale i.e the plums in one of the shots were huge compared to plums from where i'm from
  • 1 0
WTF was that lady doing with all the toilet paper?????
  • 1 0
Some people go to Costco for most small business needs. I think it's creepy for one family to buy 500 burgers in bulk, but what if your local shop was having a big barbeque at the end of a race or something? Or that lady with the TP tower was resupplying a local restaurant? It's all about context, and Flizz has a good point about Costco reducing consumer carbon footprint.

That samsara thing was sad. I raised pigs in 4-h and throughout highschool and ffa, that was fine for the animals but factory farming is just wrong. On another note I have basically the same morpheus as that kid, he's way better than me, I dont deserve such a nice bike Frown

thanks for keeping me occupied in my sports class for a few hours

The factory farming film was indeed shocking, but if were honest we all know this goes on .In my humble opinion we lost our way many years ago by turning our backs on the natural world which no matter how much our ego's tell us we're above ,we are indeed just a small part of . Through technology and lack of forethought we have had a destructive impact on everything around us ,much like a parasite or cancer slowly destroying that which sustains it. Factory farming is indeed harmful on both the well being of the livestock and the livelyhoods of more traditional farmers not to mention the diseases that these conditions must help to nurture and mutate and if not what drugs are these animals pumped full of to combat that, and how does that affect peoples immune systems when its introduced into their food I cant see an end to this kind of thing all the while populations are expanding and goverments are welcoming it as much needed growth .......food for thought aye. . ..

What a shame-Dave Vanderveen's inspiring story about living to ride and coming back from those terrible injuries and all we do is prattle on about some pretentious movie about the industrial food complex......but I'm with you-watching made me really hungry right until those costco shots of vegetables and fruit-wtf-give me more of those images of people in purple handling meat and wouldn't that scene of the dairy cows be enhanced with someone doing a massive tail whip over the circle and then doing massive slide in all that cow shit that surely drops on to the floor below.......at least everything was so clean-come to australia and see how we "harvest" our national symbol for "food". The world is f*cked anyway so be like Dave and live to ride and don't pay much attention to people pointing out the obvious.Life is too short.
