I can tell my mind is transitioning more towards ski season when I'm on Movies For Your Monday and first watch Pettit's and Siggers' video parts... Sean's cork 7 at :55 is insane. Thanks Secco for throwing those up here.

Dunno how I feel about seeing "Live free..." posted here.

On the one hand, it's great exposure for Clint and the boys. Yet, the weekly collection of downhill turning and skidding vids lack something that S&M has always pushed: enjoyment and style over flash. For all the technical improvements seen on the big wheel side, the videos are far too serious, and lack a sense of community.

I guess showing "Live free.." is another example of why few "grow out of BMX"

So, thanks for posting; hopefully it provides a positive influence.

Ever heard of 50to01? Also wearing helmets would provide an even better influence.

@colincolin: I'm with you on the helmets thing! See comment above.

@MacRamsay: I'm curious where your helmet concern originated.

For me, sure I can understand the need having spent too many years on the ground/concrete/skatelite/dirt when shit went South. Most times I was wearing a basic skate helmet; with Vert something more Motocross esque. Yet and still, I have no problem with dudes who choose not to wear anything and still blasted everything in sight.

What I've seen out of the big wheel crowd is "brah, I'm turning and skidding down a path near some trees, and I'm covered head to toe, so they DEFINITELY need to be too..."

Called me crazy, but I'm thinking this is a matter of personal choice.

If you go full gladiator for lap around a pump track and the Credence bros go full-Southern California hippy to destroy Posh or a 30 ft set of doubles, ain't no thing. My original point was S&M and the brands associated push the envelope of fun - shirt shoes helmet optional.

@jjwillTOmaui: It's mostly to do with the impression it gives kids.

It's fair game if bros wanna risk their life/livelyhood on their own terms, but if they are the cool dudes in videos, then the kids are gonna want to follow. I work with kids on bikes, professionally and socially, and cannot take responsibility for a minor if they are not reasonably protected. But I meet so many kids that ride without a helmet because it's not cool.

Yeah, I think comparing BMX to S&M, as well as saying basic bike riding safety is 'personal choice' is a bit, eh, crazy, yeah!!

Would you let your kid go riding without a helmet? Or would you be happy knowing that he/she left with a helmet on, but took it off and hid it because it wasn't cool to wear?

"Live Free or Die - Trailer" is one of the grimiest trailers ever. Well worth watching.

I'm sick of seeing BMXers doing rad stuff with no helmets. If it were MTBers doing that, they'd be called out all day long. Could we put an end to this and stop promoting BMXers who don't wear helmets? I think we've had enough brain damage and long term disability from this type of activity. Somebody get on it, please.

Helmets do help prevent brain injuries, no arguing there (except Protec helmets, which most BMXers wear, they are not exactly good...)

However BMX is a very different sport to mountain biking. Its much lower speed, infinitely more predictable terrain and usually, before the crash happens you know its coming and can easily bail out.

Should people who do parkour also wear helmets?
  • 4 4
@madmk4: Understand the difference of terrain and speed etc, but it only takes a split second and there's no way to bail as your head has already made contact with the ground. Even though the terrain may be more predictable, it's also usually harder/sharper too!

There are far too many regular incidents of head trauma from bmx/skate.

I think there's a difference with Parkour, as they're not using a vehicle or wheels - removing yourself from a situation where you are depending on wheels (bike, skate, scoot etc) means that you have to bail from a more dynamic situation, rather than just your own body the whole time.

What about bike trials, it's slow(er) speed and predictable - you wouldn't catch danny mac without a helmet would you?! Brands should wake up to this and insist that their supported athletes should set a safe example. It's not like it hinders the riding ability or experience.

Would you let your kid ride wheels without a helmet? One hit and you're potentially toast.

Soon as I saw that Rodney Mullen video I knew what I had to watch first, I’m still blown away at his skating.
