Yeah that was nuts, stupid nuts!
  • 8 1
you would think he would learn to wear a helmet after doing that 10 thousand times
  • 2 1
Yeah, gotta agree with that. The part at the beginning where he hits his head then lies there screaming.......what did you expect to happen when you didn't wear a helmet!?

Why do street/dirt jump riders hold their handlebars so far on the inside?
  • 3 1
@NiloB I think it's so they have more room for hand-placement error when doing barspins and such. Not totally sure though

For some reason your hands just feel better on the inside when your dirt jumping, riding street, or riding BMX. Your hands naturally just start to go towards the inside of your bars as your riding. It sort of gives you more room for error, knowing that when you land, and if your hand moves, it'll still be grabbing the bars instead of air. Also when you bar spin, your hand tends to search for the inside end of the grip, because its better to land with your hands halfway on the grips on the inside, than halfway off the bars. It also feels better when your spinning, since you are able to spin quicker. Honestly, everyone probably has their own reasons for holding their bars towards the inside.

sorry for the super long response

The bars are so big I think it's just kind of an automatic thing. The bars being so wide though gives a lot more control and ability to have better pop when shifting your weight back for a manual or at the lip of a jump for example.

Nico Lau: "I'm a biker, not a hiker."

Shots fired. In fairness, though - if you do the math, while he's gaining a bit of range over SRAM's 1x11, he's not gaining any real range over SRAM's 1x12. He gets lots of extra gears in the middle, though, so perhaps the argument should have been about being able to fine tune his cadence on the transition climbs, rather than the (catchy) notion that he gets to spin up rather than hike up the steeps.

It's a Shimano video, so I don't think they want you to know about SRAM's 1x12 range.
  • 5 0
@TheR: Here's the thing, though - you can get an 11-46 cassette from Shimano 2x11, and you can even spread the front rings further and really maximize that range. And here they are making a promo video with a rockstar enduro rider talking up the range he gets out of his 2x11 drivetrain, and how he likes having so much range, and how it sucks to have to hike your bike uphill and he's therefore very happy to have so much range, because then he can still really hammer it downhill. But his drivetrain is set up with the 11-30 cassette, and a relatively narrow spread between the front rings, resulting in a range roughly equal to that of SRAM 1x12 (and not much more than 1x11 of any sort). If the argument is that you want raw range, this is a fail. If the argument is that you want that much range, but you want to have small steps between individual gear ratios so you can fine tune your cadence, then that's an argument worth making, and one that supports their argument that front derailleurs shouldn't be written off yet (the new generation of FDs they put out is pretty damn good - way better than FDs of the past). But they don't. They're leaving that on the table. It's like they phoned this in.

Me, I'm more on the simple is better train. I like my mid-range 1x11 drive train (mine happens to be made by SRAM and came with my bike; I keep thinking if the cassette needs replacing and my derailleur happens to take a whack at the same time, that might be reason enough for me to go SLX or XT 1x11). I have plenty of range, thank you very much, but that's because I'm not riding at the level where I find myself spinning out and asking for more speed on the downs and having to crank up super steep climbs for hours. But I get why people don't want to give up their 2x11 drivetrains - it's about range, and it's about closely spaced ratios. Both are great arguments. You'd think that Shimano would be smart enough to understand why their product is relevant - but they leave one (ratios) out of the discussion altogether, and highlight the other despite the fact that the setup they're highlighting actually makes the counter argument (as it has no more range than the competitive product).

I hate when bmxers make fun of people for wearing helmets and than clench their head after they hit it on the ground. I already have two concussions and I was wearing a helmet.

Pinkbike has a large audience, industry power, the ability to influence and a respected position to take on issues that really do affect the sustainability of cycle sports such as repetitive head injuries - i.e. if the problem is widerspread and life affecting parents will not encourage their kids to ride

It was on PB that we learnt of the french EWS rider who went from top student of engineering to barely being able to function due to one to many hits to the head

Yes, all adults can make an informed choice about choosing to wear a helmet or not. However, I am guessing there are kids / youths, teenagers who look to those that influence the sport - such as helmet-less riders - and imitate them

Its not a huge stretch for PB to have a policy of not publicly promoting video's with guy's taking repeated blows to the head - its hardly controversial, its not as if we are asking for a view on AGW - its simply a public health issue. Everytime they have one of these - the comments are the same, why can't PB just choose something else?

Some of the hits were sickening.

I cant even take the Nathan Williams vid seriously after watching that slam. Some one get him a helmet for his birthday lol
  • 6 1
If he didn't have the sense to wear a helmet after the first head slam he sure doesn't now.

Dick is the word you ar looking for! They show him messing around with and old man when he is doing his job, would like to have seen him do the same with a huge gorilla type dude. Never mind the helmetless riding, it´s his head afterall not mine!

Such sweet moto and bike rack setup
  • 8 1
@stefanfresh: i would agree. Vid even has head impacts in his crashes. When we have recently seen riders badly injured and needing rehabilitation from bad injuries, this is not a good example.
  • 8 2
He wears a helmet on his motorbike but not on his bmx? I love watching bmx but this was too much. I turned it off
  • 9 2
@stefanfresh: Not to mention ripping the awning off of someone's building. Stopped the video right there.
  • 1 1
No comments yet, guess I'll have to watch them all chronologically.
