Arctic Swell - Surfing the Ends of the Earth: Photographer Chris Burkard and Professional Surfers Patrick Millin, Brett Barley, and Chadd Konig brave sub-zero temperatures in the Arctic Circle to capture moments of raw beauty in conditions that rank among the harshest in the natural world.  He really has an amazing style. If you like that, then do a search for "Matt Priest". His riding is just as good. Or Joey Cordova, like here: vimeo.com/99201056

 Or Chris Doyle.

is it weird that i want to buy a bmx/dj bike after watching chris fox rip it up? keep in mind i'm 52 yrs old, and i have a phd in applied physics. my wife has seen me do stupider things...i guess.

Do it. Get a 24" DJ bike with suspension. My body can't handle BMX anymore - they're just so stiff and harsh, and so twitchy that you will crash. I'm 36 and have started DJ and BMX racing, and it's the best thing I've ever done.

thanks darrelw, i think i will. actually, what got me started on this idea was an email from competitive cyclist-santa cruz jackal for $399. you think i should go 24"? the jackal is 26".
  • 3 0
26 is the 29 of the DJ/SK8park world. I'm 6'4" and feel more confident on a dirt jumper than when I take a cruiser BMX to the jumps. Start at a pump track to get the feel of how quick it handles. It will make you a better rider! Kris Fox is my new favorite rider to watch, even though he didn't throw the crazy tricks. Such flow & confidence!

Go 26 for 399 the jackal is a badass bike!

In general, the bigger the wheels, the harder a bike is to throw around. That means it won't be so nimble, but also you won't get into trouble as much. Smaller wheels accelerate faster, but also lose that momentum on rough ground.
For someone who's 6"4, 26" would make sense. I've got a 24" dirt jump bike (NS Holy 1) and a 24" BMX cruiser for racing. The BMX race bike (not a 24" BMX for tricks) has a longer wheelbase and is stiffer. It's far faster and pumps way better. However, it's really harsh when I case landings and the geometry won't take suspension whereas the 24" DJ will. For a man of experience, I'd say you should go for a 24" or 26". You can get great 26" DJ bikes, or if they're too twitchy, look at 4X bikes. They'll still be tons of fun.

@upchuckyeager I'm 46 years old and I just got a Black Market Lil Monster 24. May or may not be what you're looking for, but it's a really fun bike.

hey all, thanks for all the comments. it's weird, i've been a mtn biker close to 30 yrs, but i got to it after a few seasons of road racing. bmx was something i did as a little kid, but growing up in san diego, i got into skating and surfing in middle school and high school, and bmx kinda went away for me. the road racing thing happened at college. anyway, i know how to make a bike go fast, and i'm comfortable airing it. but pulling a manual for more than 10 ft is beyond me. seems to me that's a skill you learn on a smaller bike first.

Some thoughts on the Splinter Bike Video:

I wooden have thought it possible, but it looks like it turned out oak-k.
It takes alotta balsa to attempt a project of that magnitude, fir sure, elm impressed.
I suspect he had help, but he's mahogany all the credit.
He alder produce them for sale, I'm sure it would prove poplar.
But it would be bad if customers got slivers in their ash, they would probably birch about it!
(this would require a doctor with tweezers to teak a look)
He would need to make several frame sizes, small, medium & larch.
People in Santa Monica would use them as beech cruisers.

Walnut olive you will find this humorous, maple some of you will??

That is allSmile
