So it's 2015 and Whistler is just opening for riding...
Wait a minute... It's summer time!
That means, BEERS and BIKES!
Get your bike all tuned up, because...
Patrol has done their sweep, and it's time to open this mountain up!
Scan your pass. Oh yeah, new sweet system. Only bad part is, you will miss chatting with the scanner staff. Also you need a pocket, or I guess you can use it to stuff your underwear (though a sock would work better).
Load 'em up.
First riders up.
First riders down!
And now...The bikes, and their people. Here is Stephen Exley, Intense M9.
George Amos with his Zerode G2. Zero derailleurs.
Remi Gauvin with his Rocky Mountain. I have seen it, but would be shot if I tried to take a photo of it.
Tanya Crocker, a Rocky Mountain Flatline I am allowed to take a photo of.
Terry Hauk, Team Loudenterprise. Santa Cruz V-10.
The man himself. Jason Louden, with his amazing dog. And the muddy Canfield.
Laurie Citynski, Canfield Jedi.
Steve Wong, Canfield... I think that is all of the Canfields in Canada.
Maddie Leger, Giant Glory. This is Maddie's 1st-year riding! Martha Marquez, Specialized Demo.
Hannah Johnson, the bright yellow Knolly.
Michelle Weekly, Kona Supreme.
Paoca Ricci, Norco Aurum.
Will Snell, Transition TR450. Flat quickly repaired by Loudenterprise at the Pinkbike tent.
Jaci Hayden, slick green Pivot.
Kreuter Sylvain, Kona Supreme Operator. PHOTOBOMB!
Seth Sherlock, Intense M16.
This guy took off before I could get his name. So I will call him Fanny Pack Guy aka Judd de Vall.
Intermission....
Back to it! The Claw is stoked.
Georgius Minnius, "WHITE V-10 BABY " (just as he wrote it).
Cody Jorgensen, Giant Trance. From Maple Ridge up to ride with his friend, Matthew Stein and his Santa Cruz from Whistler.
Alice Matthews, Devinci Frantik.
Rohan V., GT Fury.
Julie Bertrand, Norco Aurum.
Jack Iles, Norco Aurum.
Finn Iles, Lapierre. Got my fingers crossed that he can keep his Whistler Whip King title.
Ryan Armstrong, with his hand Sharpied Santa Cruz V-10.
Even the trail crew got out to enjoy their handiwork.
Jaclyn Delacroix, Muddbunnies, Giant Glory.
The Claw.
Team Cycles Devinci.
Drew and Jon Mozell made the quick trek from North Van to enjoy opening day.
Let's top it off with a little bit of riding.
Get all cleaned up and ready for the next day.
Looking forward to Tippie's video adventures of opening day.
Awww, you guys are precious! Because here's us girls, fretting over our helmet hair! At least it gives us an excuse to wear cute apres hats to the bar for beers :-)
I'd love if Pinkbike did a feature similar to one they did a few years back, where over the course of a day, they checked 100 bikes, took down notes of all parts they found, and did up graphs showing the most common/popular bikes, forks, shocks, groupo, wheels etc. It made for interesting reading!
@RedBurn: I got what you are saying, and know you meant no bad ode, but you will offend the sensitivities of a lot of wankers (North American Type) on this web site with comments like that. Steve Smith will come back to WC racing when he is ready and will kick ass, so if he needs a bike park to hone is skills then good on him! I can't wait to have him back in the line-up, but there are those who feel that they have to defend his integrity even though they do not know him personally or professionally! To those 20 who neg propped RedBurn: How do you know that Mr. Smith disagrees with Mr RedBurn? If Steve Doesn't care, why do you?
There are for now, but even the likes of upper detroit and joyride have seen the filling in of holes, removing of roots, and where did that big wooden stepdown on lower Joyride go? That put a few hairs on my chest, and creaks in my knee..
The thing is if they have a carbon bike that means it's ready for production because carbon molds can reach 50 000 dollars so carbon frames are the final angles for the bike so I wonder why it's taking so long
Good follow up post Seth. That's the right attitude. I don't hate you for having an M16 at such a young age regardless of how you got it. I hope to give my son the same opportunities you have been given. I don't care if I have to take the bus to work, nothing is more important than the bike my son rides.
@pooler thanks for the link. This kid's skill set is the only thing enviable here, good for him. I think he made his correction politely enough. Keep on slaying, Seth!
Was going to comment on how you can afford a bike I could never afford, and I'm 32... :-(. But you deserve to shred now before wife and family duties take over muahahahah
Sorry, I meant no disrespect in my response. I love Pinkbike and all they have done for me. I was simply correcting the facts that my name is not Sam, it is Seth, and my bike is not an M6, it is the brand new M16. My father did not buy me the bike, I am sponsored by Intense Cycles and have been for 2 years. Thanks to Intense for sending me the bike, it rides amazingly and I love it!
Nice topic, but there`s something which i don`t like a bit... Why so many riders are overweight even from a young age... that is no good people, get out and get fit, eat clean, be healthy.. And stay away from the fast foods...
Might be a liability thing for big wheel rental bikes. The rear wheel doesn't roll off the edge as soon as you'd expect if you're used to 26s. So to keep everyone happy there's an anti endo ramp
Trail report day 2....blue skies, 19 degrees. Dirt merchant is at its best. No braking bumps, super smooth and tacky. All the takeoffs and trannies are dialled in. Best I have ever seen it. Ever. Aline closed all day. Angry pirate is wicked. Never ridden it in such amazing condition. Super tight, flowy and techy. Top of crank it up was closed for maintenance. New RFID pass system works great! Thanks whistler for opening up early!!
Correct me if i am wrong, but Whistler isn`t opening a bit late every year? Isn`t there still a lot of snow? Here we can`t open our regular bike resorts because there`s still a plenty of snow, 3metres at some places in the mountain and we are not able even to get close to the trails. How was the winter season in Whistler this year?.
Stoked to see the season kicking off. I am currently living in TX but have a trip to Angel Fire New Mexico planned for the 22-25 May. I need a rocky Mountain fix and can't wait! I will make it to Whistler one day.
There's always some arse who puts their pass under their innersole of their shoe and puts there foot against the scanner leaving loads of crap on it.....
One does not simply ride into Mordor jokes come on ahahaha
P.S. I get it
the place is f*cking rad, I've had the privilege of taking 3 vacations in Whistler
Kreuter Sylvain - in a one of a kind, auction ONLY, TLD PINK fundraiser Sam Hill Fort Bill kit from a few years back?????
Fires are going to be bad this year
Is this the beginning of no more gnar™ for Whistler?
Let's see those new A-Line speed bumps!
Nice!
