YT Launch New Cheaper Capra Core 1 & Upgrades Core 2 Model

In these days of universally inflating prices, it's good news from YT as they are launching a new cheaper model of their Capra enduro bike, and upgrading the second cheapest model too.

The Capra MK3 was launched in 2021, featuring 170 mm of travel front and rear and a choice of carbon and alloy frames. The new base model, the Capra Core 1, uses an aluminum frame and is available with mullet (MX) or full 29" wheel configurations. It costs €2,699 / £2,699 / $2,699 USD / $3,799 CAD.

For that, you get a RockShox Zeb Base fork (with the new entry-level Rush RC damper) and SuperDeluxe R air shock; SRAM's new DB8 mineral oil brakes and an NX drivetrain. You also get YT's own-brand dropper post which uses SDG internals and delivers up to 200 mm travel in size XXL.

Here are the full specs.

Note there is a small mistake in the above spec chart - the cassette is a SRAM PG 1210 Eagle with an 11-50T range.

Capra Core 2

The addition of the new base model has allowed YT to push the boat out with the Core 2 model; it has been upgraded from NX to GX drivetrain, and the dropper post travel has been increased to match the Core 1, with 200 mm travel in the biggest size. This does come with what I'm going to call a "price upgrade" of about €100.

Compared to the Core 1, upgrading to the Core 2 model gets you the GX (not NX) drivetrain with a wider-range cassette; Fox's super supple 38 Grip fork; Crank Brothers Synthesis alloy wheels, and SRAM Code R brakes.

Here are its full specs:

Weights and prices

YT were good enough to provide some weight figures for the two bikes. These numbers are for the average weight for a size S bike, tubeless, no pedals, no bottle. Those weights in freedom units are CAPRA 29 Core 2: 35.9 lbs; CAPRA MX Core 2: 35.5 lbs; CAPRA 29 Core 1: 37.0 lbs; CAPRA MX Core 1: 36.6 lbs. Before you complain that that's quite a lot, remember it's a 170 mm enduro bike that costs less than some frames.

Nice to see lower prices. Bike companies are going to be a in a world of hurt this year.
  • 32 0
Oh ya , especially ones that are publicly traded , layoffs coming to keep the bottom line up .
  • 29 2
Agreed, things have gotten overly froth'd the last few years. My guess is that the industry is in for a round of consolidation as overstretched suppliers need to restructure/sell to get out under mounds of debt. Hopefully, the successful brands will decide competing on value is the key to long term viability, and will do so by focusing on improving unit economics (trimming fat). In the long-term consolidation leads to higher prices, but in the short term I don't think this is the case.

For reference, I'm an accountant not an economist, so everything I just said is probably bogus.
  • 8 0
@mxmtb: more like layoffs are coming to make sure they can service debt. Interest expense line items for companies have tripled since mid 2021, and if you're highly levered it can be a death curse.
  • 9 1
I agree. It seems like ever since Giant released their statement about delayed payments, bike companies have started to reduce pricing. It’s the low to mid level bikes that are mostly impacted, but as we know, there is not a lot of money to be made in the bike industry unless you are on top. I hope as many bike shops and industry employees can weather the storm.
  • 30 0
@jaytdubs: It's okay, everything economists say is bogus too.
  • 9 1
@BiNARYBiKE: remember we created economics. Everything that happens can be changed. By the same virtue everything that happens is intentional.
  • 1 0
And in the next few years.
  • 16 0
And they haven't even lowered themselves to SX, unlike a lot of other companies who will remain nameless in California

If hurt is returning to pre covid sales after 2-3 years of huge profits then sure, ‘a world of hurt’.

The companies are just fine, it’s only the staff that will get burned.

Found this on r/mtb today. Interesting. Used it. Seems to be a legit bot for searching brands by name and depth of discount. Used Knolly as a trial. Nothing on sale (confirmed with separate website visit). However, the bot did not identify clearance items (Taughton frames, shirts, merch etc.). Mileage may vary.

mtbbot.com/?discount=10
  • 1 0
 @10DollarHelmet10DollarHead: that’s strange,
Knolly has been heavily discounting some of their bikes since November of last year.
They were offering 30% off Fugitive, warden, etc.
I sent the link to a buddy that picked up a Fugitive for 5ish k brand new.
It was a smokin deal

@kokofosho: Most important comment of the year. We are swimming in the swamp we created, intenionally indeed
  • 1 1
@justanotherusername: I'm sure your right for organizations that had scale and market share and the Covid boom was a windfall resulting in big economic profits (as opposed to accounting profits which don't take account for the opportunity cost of capital, a big distinction) for a select few. For organizations trying to build scale and market share, a big top line (sales) explosion doesn't necessarily equate to economic profits. Growth, not profits, are what motivate many growth stage companies, and my guess is that by volume more bike brands are middle-market growth stage organizations, not mature profit-making machines. Following this logic, these companies were not squireling away cash and paying huge executive salaries, they were putting it all back into building their supply chains and maturing their organizations.

To your point though, SOME of the companies will be fine (Specialized, Trek, etc.). But what folks often forget that the employees are often the largest benefactors of the organizational success at growth stage organizations, meaning a healthy balance sheet is key to keeping folks employed.
  • 1 0
@kokofosho: Yes and no. I agree that we can collectively change policy making through good ideas and passionate advocates. However, economic forces are less about conscious decisions and more about "animal instincts" (greed, fear, the need to feel safe), impulses that are hard to control even for those well aware of them, and macro-economic outcomes being the sum of a whole lot of individual impulses and well out of the control or intent of even of the few at The Commanding Hights (great book btw).
  • 1 0
 @kokofosho:

Not quite. We as consumers drive demand which in turn drives supply. Bikes are one market where free market economics do seem to prevail, I.e. no gov subsidies. I think the demand spiked, supply is now spiking while demand is falling. That lag in the ability to increase supply, the big period of no availability, combined with huge increases in costs cut everyone’s margins, increased prices. So the brands that can compete on value will be the ones with independent control over supply chains. They’ll be the ones that control costs and supply and respond to market forces quickly.

Basically we’re a line on a graph, but there are mor factors than just consumers. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out, but I think bikes will get cheap for a while. RIP to the dudes selling their stock spires for 7k on the buy sell.

@porkchopsandwich: I'm with you. So you could buy the MX version, replace the fork with a 27.5 version. 190mm fork and 27.5 front wheel. Would be a little hassel to buy/sell the old fork and front wheel, but I have to believe they would sell quickly. That's my plan if I ever buy a mullet bike.
  • 3 3
The tyres don't make any sense. They might as well sell the bikes without them. Otherwise seems like a decent deal.

Where are the MAGA Qanon Punisher skulls, the dumb ass white trash tatts, the violence against women, the misogyny, and the nationalist and NAZI imagery which YY utilized in it's advertising and marketing for years?

⬆️⬆️All of this was at the core of the YT image, the center of their ethos, and was etched in mountain bikers minds as an integral part of the YT brand.

Don't the majority of people use their right hand for their rear brake? Makes sense to me to have it on the left so I can drink while using the rear brake.

@DCF:Next pink bike poll. What hand do you grab your water bottle with?

I was joking with my reply as something to complain about, but the first thing I always think of seeing this frame is that it would be weird not being able to access the bottle from both sides. Probably something that I would get used after the first ride and definitely not something that would impact my buying decision.

I generally use the right hand, being right handed. Never really gave much concern to braking needs. Now thinking about it, given the choice of only having one brake to use, I would choose the front all day, unless one was doing a wheelie and drinking at the same time.
  • 2 0
@handynzl: If your rear brake in on the right (non-moto style), you'll want to have the right hand on the bar for emergency braking while you suckle the filthy nub with your left hand.

@DoubleCrownAddict: you should never go full retard
  • 1 1
@tubby1536: why would you want to try to steer against the breaking force of the front wheel trying to pull by grabbing only the front brake?

I use an Osprey Savu and use the left bottle holder because if I'm coasting downhill and grab a sip on trail, grabbing front brake instantly makes your fork dive, weight shift forward & the bars turn hard toward the angle of the terrain. It's chaotic at bey to ride a one handed front brake on uneven downhill
  • 2 0
@suspended-flesh: @suspended-flesh: Even though I live in NZ where left hand rear is the law (to do with hand signals when on a public road), I have had my bikes, MTB and road, set up as right hand rear ever since V-brakes came out and I wanted to tidy up the stupid "S" the cable used to make coming out of the right hand lever then back again to the noodle on the V-brake. The left hand lever cable could just go over and straight down.

Long story short, always use my right hand to brake, always use my right hand to get my bottles. Never once crashed in decades of riding.

@DoubleCrownAddict: the guy that marketing appeals to... Bruv, first of all I'm Canadian, so MAGA don't really apply here. Secondly, I'm pretty vocal about my unabashed, life-long love, steel hardtails, that are made by Canadian companies.... Definitely not that guy their marketing appeals to, lulz.  @Snapcatcher: Exactly, exo and slippery dual compound. While the latter can be explained by price on Core 1, exo has no place on a 170mm bike. And Core 2 should get a better compound, at least front.

I'd love the downvoters on my previous comment to explain how the hell they think I'm wrong about this lol
  • 1 0
@Margoulin: Stock will play a significant role in the course of the events this year
  • 1 0
@blowmyfuse: Mainly because the rear brake does not do much on it's own. I had a cotter pin brake and lost my front brake pads on a ride once and it was not fun trying to slow down.

I am not trying to advocate one way or the other. I will say I am only taking a sip when the terrain allows safe for one handed riding so not concerned about it. As the guy below you said, using right hand for 30 years and never crashed from taking a drink so it really is a non issue. I may need to experiment using the stranger to drink this summer just for fun.

  • 1 3
@DoubleCrownAddict: I don't think YT is relevant anymore. Not because of any of the stuff you list that no one cares about except you. Because ten years ago they had the best bike with the best spec at the lowest price, for which people could accept the YT bargain basement brand. Nowadays they're not the best, the best specced or the cheapest... But they still say YT on them... So what's the point?
I could go down to my local Specialized dealer and get a great bike on discount with unmatched build quality, decent-ish spec and a premium badge on the head tube for the same money.
So what's the point of YT in 2023?
  • 1 0
@jaame: you made me look. From what I can see, even with Specialized's massive sale going on right now, there is no carbon enduro bike with fox performance elite or equivalent suspension for 4k. It doesn't exist. You could try to compare the evo to a Capra but it has much less travel and a 36 instead of a 38 and still costs $700 more. And the YT's aren't even on sale yet. Spesh has now moved to consumer direct, and they're still not as cheap when they are marked down by over 30%. But maybe the prices are different in the UK?
  • 1 0
@DCF: no they're not, they're still more expensive but it's a premium brand with an actual lifetime warranty, and you can actually go down to the shop and get it.
YT have got a lot more expensive since Brexit, and Specialized have got a good bit cheaper in the last few weeks. The increased cost of living is starting to bite.
  • 1 0
@jaame: it's a premium brand for sure. Im never sold on a lifetime warranty. I think 5-7 is a good enough warranty considering they are non transferable and I definitely don't ride the same bike longer than that. I doubt specialized has to warranty many bikes past that time frame. i also doubt spesh will keep their prices low once they get rid of old stock and the market picks back up. They seem to be historically closer to the top range in price. Now is a great time to purchase one if you have the means!
Btw I don't ride a yt. I went with a way too expensive ibis v2. but I do appreciate their value and I think they look badass. There may be a Tues in my future
  • 1 1
@DCF: I've had a Capra. It was nice and cheap just before the first Covid wave. £1999 for a Capra base. I did 2300km on the that bike in ten months and took a stack of KOMs. It was a great bike... But it was still a YT.
I wouldn't get another because the main selling point was the price, and they're not cheap now. The Spesh Enduro build I did ended up costing a lot more but it was such a sweet bike.
If I was looking for cheap now I would probs go Canyon. YT have lost what they once had, in my opinion.
  • 37 0
I can't complain about the price, and the specs are sensible. NX gets a pass at this price and the DB8 sounds alright. That green is polarising but i dig it. Almost expected to see some headset routing to ruin things, but damn this is a winner.
  • 15 2
Sx shouldn't be a product, and it certainly should never be specced on a bike. Kudos to YT for not speccing it, just to save some pennies.
  • 2 2
@ratedgg13: Of course it should be a product as cheap bikes also need derailleurs, but you just need to vote with your dollars: don't buy bike that come with SX.
  • 6 0
@nickfranko: Disagree. NX was introduced as SRAM's lowest tier system, only to have SX fabricated to cut under that. I've known people to have SX derailleurs last 3 rides - and easy ones at that. No MTB component should be made of plastic like that, nor made to such an appallingly poor standard that it doesn't last. If SRAM wanted a lower tier of drivetrain, they should have kept one of their older product lines alive.
  • 4 4
@ratedgg13: my NX 12x lasted 15mins of bikepark before it gave up and commited suicide in the spokes
  • 1 0
@ratedgg13: It doesn't seem like value-engineering has yet reached the component level yet. Bike company product managers needs to assemble a complete bike to hit a price point, and need to spec marginal components (for now). If recession trends continue maybe we'd see XX or XT level kit* on bikes at this price range.

*(said kit doesn't yet exist)
  • 3 1
@JohSch: my NX has lasted two years.
Lots of park laps.
  • 1 1
Most brands would be speccing bike like this with SX at this price point. Kinda pumped to see an NX here.
  • 1 0
I'm assuming they got an all SRAM discount. For the same price I'd prefer deore, but I assume that's not possible. My main problem with NX is that the cassette uses an HG driver, making it different from.the rest of the line. Made sense as the first 12 speed drivetrains (easier upgrades, and easier for oems to adopt) but there should be an xd NX cassette. Make the sx cassette the HG option.

@valrock: There are stories online of YT owners waiting months for warranty replacements. I believe it was COVID/Supply chain issues. YT was quick to respond and approved the warranty replacement within a week. I know a Canyon rider who never got a response (I realize this is one). My take on these brands is that you need to be comfortable performing your own maintenance.

A manufacturer posted the weights in a press release?! Doesn't even matter what the weight is, seems none of the other brands will do that. Thanks, YT.
  • 2 1
It's amazing how the cost of stuff has gone up so much that 2.5k now seems a bargain for an alloy low end build...only as far back as 2015/16 you could get a top of the line carbon Capra with Kashima everything, X2 shock, XX1 11 speed, Renthal bars and carbon rims for 3.5k that aside from a slightly steeper head angle and slacker seat tube will still out perform this bike most likely. The way prices have gone up it makes more sense to but a top spec bike from a couple years ago used than a current gen low end bike...the geometry has barely changed and the shock technology is basically the same and still crap compared to aftermarket tuned options. And those saying a Yeti is 15k are getting ripped off...I built a higher spec Yeti than the top end models off the shelf for 8-9k and that is with a PUSH 11.6, FAST SC4 Damper, fancy wheels etc...anyone that goes into a shop and pays full rrp for a complete build is a mug..many have argued the opposite but I guarantee if you shop around and look for deals you can build up a better bike for less... but this isn't to take away from YT at least in comparison to other bikes on the market right now they have put effort into making a quality bike for 'cheap' and that green one looks great too.

I literally remember when for £3,300 Yeti would stand-up an entire production line, in the USA no less, just to make one frame to suit my exact requirements and then the CEO of RockShox would personally fly over to my riding spot and spend a week there tuning my fork to the exact requirements of my billiard table smooth blue trail.

DB8 brakes are ok until you have to service them.
  • 4 0
 What's up with servicing them?
  • 1 1
@islandforlife: They require db8 specific tools. Can’t use the normal sram ones because these are mineral oil brakes rather then Srams normal DOT. You also have to use the finish line oil in these with which shops don’t typically carry much, if any of. Just a bit tedious to start and get all the parts but it would be fine if you only use these brakes.
  • 1 0
@ihsik: So not specific tools... just a different bleed kit, like every brand of brake. As for the mineral oil... looks like people are using various mineral oils without issue.
  • 1 0
@islandforlife: You do need a different bleed kit for the db8 brakes specifically. Sram has a kit that’s universal for their other brakes and that set has their own. Good to know about the mineral oil though!

You can get a slightly used full carbon bike with much better components cheaper than this. So many people purchased Covid bikes and they are just sitting in the garage.

I still dont understand what "core" means in the context of MTBing
  • 14 0
As far as I get it "core" is a range of bikes that are almost always available and regularly updated. In contrast to "uncaged", which are special models in limited numbers only.

This is in-fact a very good question, and the answer begins dating back to approximately 500BC. The local bike riding community would name their bikes using roman numerals, such as II or IX or even the popular IXXIII. However, this could be somewhat problematic since Roman Numerals hadn’t been invented yet and no one knew exactly what bike model anyone was talking about. The problem was also compounded by the fact bikes hadn’t been invented either, so you can imagine the confusion - but that’s a somewhat minor point here. Eventually after many many years of frustration the elders gathered around to finally put an end to this incredibly unusual situation running rife with the population and causing all kinds of pandemonium. An elder, by the name of Actus Co’re, who was very much like the Elvis of his time, decided that in the years to come when bikes were eventually invented, and if the company happened to be YT, that his name would be the proper naming convention to denote the sub categories of bikes within the YT range. Over the many centuries, during much anticipation for bikes to finally be invented, Actus was dropped along with the apostrophe, to help simplify the naming convention, and so now we’re left with just Core.

@Wabit: Nice imitation of Douglas Adams.

Core in biking in essence means like, no nonsense biking. No extra frills or tech that’s just for show. Just pure riding. Like bmx is super core, just a hunk of steel and riding. So I think the core bikes for YT reflect that in the sense that they are a solid set up to get riding on.

the bottle is on the wrong side of the frame; I drink with my right hand (and rear-brake with my left while doing that)
  • 5 0
Honestly: that far down you won't reach for the bottle while riding. I own a YT and ... you stop for a drink. Really.
  • 1 0
@riverbum: you might be right, the bottle is far down in the frame

Does this cheaper model snap even easier?

Shit part spec. But what ever you can cover a turd in high lighter yellow but you can’t fool this a*shole.
  • 2 4
Why would anyone buy the Core 1 considering the upgrades you get with Core 2 for 100 more?
  • 8 0
The core 2 is 400 - 600 € more expensive. But your statement is true for the core 2 NX vs. GX - I'd always go with the GX spec.
  • 1 1
Color on the Core 1 is better. Core 2 color is crap
