This is exactly what the "FOD" Forest of Dean in the U.K and you have been asking for! Want 15 runs in a day, just learning the ropes, training for that next race or just fancy a blast, then open this little beauty up. New trucks and trailers, no bike damage and you don't even have to lift a finger. Now that is the kind of service you and I rightly deserve.

To find out a load more, follow me guys...

Up in style

The call came into PinkBike UK HQ that the FOD is now home to its own uplift. Bring your bike, camera and notebook next week and we will even feed you at lunchtime. Not bad being a journalist for the best MTB website in the World is it?! On arrival we met up with several of the other journalists, mags and websites based in the U.K all testing out new bikes, hardware and race kit. Steve Jones was on a full carbon Lapierre dripping with SRAM XX, Robin Weaver was on a prototype Rocky Mountain, the Single Track boys were on a Proto Saracen whilst I was running that 225 prototype. Forget the trade shows, press days is where it's at for seeing all the latest top swag.

A few single minded journalists were there

The ball started rolling at 10:00a.m with the FlyUp Downhill Boys loading the bikes and strapping them up for us securely. Zero chance of any bike damage I can assure you on that, no scratches or dents guaranteed. A short, less than ten minute drive to the top and we're off the road into a layby for safe unloading. Again not a finger lifted as your pride and joy is handed down to you.

Which 80s super group was this young man in

Then a short 2 minute pedal to the start of the trails. Now I've only been to the FOD a handful of times recently so am definitely not the man to describe the tracks and terrain.
What I can say is there are several routes to mix and match, you won't get bored that's for sure. Once at the bottom, just a quick 60 second flat pedal to the pick up point where your carriage awaits. Definitely no pressure to bang out the runs, take it at your own pace and sit out as and when. How many runs did we manage? Not far off 15, even with a 30 minute lunch break and 5 minutes spent trying to coax Hensley and Buzz back into the Descent-Gear Van!

Facilities for an uplift are second to none with a bike shop, bike hire, cafe, jet wash and bowl for the dogs' water! Plus a little safer than some other areas in Wales, negative props here we go... The cafe is top draw with some quality nose bag, ask Hensley! Grab your scram, sit outside and soak up the atmosphere before you hit the trails again.

Hurry up darling, I'm starving...

What more can I tell you? If you want a full day's riding, no pushing or pedaling uphill and the five star treatment then this is it guys and girls. Just make sure you book on as I'm pretty sure it's going to be a sell out. I've already booked and paid for my spot for the 661 Downhill this Winter, now make sure you don't miss out on all that vital practice!

Having spent thousands on a downhill bike, then some more on all the gear, plus all the effort that some who don't have trails on their doorstep make to get to somewhere to ride, what's £23 to not have to push a 40lb bike up a hill and just sit in a comfy van thats waiting for you at the bottom. Pushing? How many runs do you get in? And how much of your energy do you waste pushing that you could be using pinning it down? I've been riding the FOD for 12 years and after using this service its shone a whole new light on the place. I went with 6 people and a few of us were thinking the same thing, what's the point? Everyone bloody loved it. Give it a go, even if you do once a month!

Used this at the week end! Highly recommended is all I can say! Nice van, trailer is the best I've used and the service as a whole is professional and friendly. Get down there, make friends with someone who can show you where all the secret stuff is, which there's loads, and its not really secret, just off the beaten track as it was, and have an amazing time riding a massive array of different stuff everyone will enjoy! MBUK and Dirt use this place as a testing area for bikes and gear and you'll recognize loads of stuff when you get there you've seen in the mags. The local scene is one of the best I've encountered and everyones pretty sound! Do it!

It is one of the cheapest uplifts in the uk, and has a lot more tracks than most venues. I push FOD a lot and 7-8 runs is a good day. We did 16 runs on monday, all full runs race pace, I have never done that whilst pushing. Simon is a good friendly driver, and although we are local so didnt need it, he was explaining tracks to people and couldnt do enough to help. Simon is helping develop our local scene, putting something back and Id much prefer to ride FOD than cwmcarns motorway. Noone is forcing you to use the uplift, so quit complaining, its not like Simon will miss your business as there are more than enough happy customers to keep his van full every weekend and most days.

Went to FOD last weekend and whilst I got 6 runs in with 3 fuel stops (food and a cuppa), I would probably take the uplift next time. The push isn't long but it is a killer after a couple of full pelt runs, it's the push between the pylons that hurts! By the end of the day I wanted to do more runs but was knackered and I live about 2hrs away if the traffic is clear.

FOD is a great place, but im not sure there is a need for uplifts, i think FOD is best enjoyed riding sections of the track. Although if you did wanna pack lots of runs in then this could be a great idea.

I was initially thinking the same as you, it's really not that hard pushing up and getting loads of runs and sections in. But at only £20 for a day we thought we'd try it and banged out 16 runs in a day. It was brilliant being able to hit the tracks that you wouldn't usually because they're not always worth the push up. Fast uplift and a fairly flat pedal mean you're warmed up when you hit the trails and you can roll into any of them a high speed without having to pedal!

Definitely recommend.

the walk up is only like 15 mins! its nothing compared to cwm carn(were it would take an hour to walk up) i think this is just to get the money in. From my house cwm carn and FOD are both only about 50mins away. So why not just got cwmcarn which if i want an uplift day ??
I will proberly just stick to the walk up and have a cheaper more relaxsed time
  • 1 0
yep you can stick with the walk but i'd prefer 12+ full runs at full pace rather than 12+ half runs (like the top half - corkscrew, top of sheepskull etc) and less than full pace because you're knackered from the push up. I can see myself doing 5 push up days to 1 uplift day.

you cvan do full runs , and thats the thing, if you get nackerd, you get fitter , thus maybe giving you better results in the future!
  • 1 0
i got 18 runs (well including half) in one day without any uplift.

 exactly my point

ollyforster- youre right, some of the best tracks in the FOD are miles away from the pedalabikeaway centre. You're really missing some of the best singletrack in the UK if you don't take your XC/AM bike and go and find them, the motorcycle trail and Dowies are awesome then theres also some good stuff in Yorkley woods so I'm told. Unless the uplift went to these places in a round route I'd probably just walk up as the push only takes about 15 mins at a relaxed pace, but like I said some of the best stuff is just only reachable by pedalling there!
  • 1 0
You're right, some of the tracks further away are better, Dowies especially, but it's better because they're not so well known and better kept.

Looks MINT! Deffently hittin up FOD at some point!

Same! That trailer looks kooshty, dont look like it will scratch the bikes up much which is awesome

I thought they had changed POD or VOD Big Grin

23 pounds? that's roughly 36.75, which is exactly how much it costs me to ride silverstar for a day.
  • 1 0
why couldn't people shuttle for themselves?
  • 2 0
No access to (unauthorised) vehicles. Plus it'd me a nightmare with loads of idiots all over the place! Wink
  • 2 0
haha I'd be pissed if someone decided to charge me for one of our many local shuttle runs
  • 1 0
Conshow- Thats the problem in this country, there's little land that doesn't have access controls placed on it and especially where vehicular access is concerned. People use to run private uplifts at a number of places near to the venue in this article, however people used to drive at crazy speeds and annoy other forest users so the Forestry Commission (they manage alot of Forests in the UK, most of the ones on decent gradients!) got a bit upset!
Is Flyupdownhill looking at running uplfits at any of the old Dragon tracks? I'm thinking Wentwood, Abercarn, Mynydd Du, Gethin, Rheola, Mtn Ash? Really miss riding those tracks, Rheola and Mynyd Du especially.
