2013 Shimano Saint Group Set - First Look

by Si Paton
The New SAINT focuses entirely on the gravity segment of mountain biking and that’s something you can clearly see in the new features. By providing increased rigidity, braking power, durability and ergonomics, SAINT allows Downhill racers and Freeriders to concentrate entirely on their line in gravity situations.

To make sure that new SAINT group set excelled in the extreme riding environment of downhill racing, the group set was developed in close collaboration with pro racers like Aaron Gwin and Gee Atherton. These riders provided Shimano engineers and designers with valuable input that was critical to improving SAINT on the race course.
The result? An unprecedented 5 World Cup wins, the World Cup Overall title and a Saint group set that consumers will discover is more compact, stronger, lighter and more silent than previous generations! Winner of the 2011 World Cup, Aaron Gwin: “New SAINT rocks! It is powerful, reliable and strong. It’s the best I’ve ever ridden!” No distraction, at least not from your drive train!

Multiple Downhill World Cup winner and World Champion of 2010, Gee Atherton about the SAINT drive train: “The new SAINT group set is incredibly good. The SHADOW RD+ is a big advantage for DH riders because the chain is so stable and the crank is so stiff that every push is put into power!”

Shimano Saint DH Saint rear der 2013
Because gravity riders need more stability in critical situations, SHIMANO has developed the new SAINT 10 speed rear derailleur with a SHADOW+ RD. This technology, adopted from Shimano’s XTR rear derailleurs, offers a very quiet drive train for gravity riding. The derailleur has a switch at the pully cage (see right image) to activate a stabilizer that counteracts the forces of up and down chain momentum in rough terrain. To change the rear wheel the switch needs to be in turned ‘off’ position.
The SHADOW+ RD offers better control, reduces chain dropping dramatically and provides a more silent drive train. It lets you focus on what’s most important… your line.
SHIMANO also added a bump stopper to the rear derailleur to reduce hitting noise. A super wide inner link offers maximum stiffness that is so important in gravity riding.
To make sure that your SAINT group set is also ready for Freeriding, SHIMANO has added a mode converter. This mode converter is at the mounting position of the rear derailleur and offers you the opportunity to switch between a Downhill ratio 11-28 or a wider ratio for Freeride 11-32.

Shimano SAINT cranks 2013
Shimano engineers understand the enormous amount of pressure that is exerted on the crank in gravity situations and have used a steel axle and steel pedal inserts to counteract this. SHIMANO was still able to drop the weight of the already reliable Saint crank by using HOLLOWTECH II technology and a lighter 4 arm spider. Chainrings are available in a 34T, a 36T and a 38T and the new crank is compatible with different varying bottom bracket sizes (68/73/83mm and pressfit BB’s).

Shimano SAINT shifters 2013
Light shifting performance For more control on the demanding downhill tracks SHIMANO created longer Rapidfire Plus shift levers (the main lever is 6% longer and the release lever is 10% longer than the current M810) in close cooperation with our pro downhill racers. Next to that SHIMANO improved rider ergonomics and performance of the SAINT shifting system. The operating force needed to shift through the gears is very light and extremely consistent. Even in the low gear numbers! (Maximum 37% lighter compared to the M810). These shifters also feature 2-Way Release technology that allows the release lever to be operated in two directions; Multi-Release to shift multiple gears in one stroke and Instant Release to shift gears as soon the lever is activated.

Shimano SAINT brake lever 2013
The Stopping Power of a Pine Tree!
Top DH pro rider Brendan Fairclough says: “The brakes are amazing! They do exactly what you want and I trust them with my life.” The new SAINT offers you unbeatable stopping power and brake control with “Ice Tech” disc brakes.
Shimano Saint DH ICE rotor with extended cooling fins 2013
A high power one way bleeding 4-ceramic piston caliper construction in combination with the 1-finger brake lever does the rest. Especially for extreme gravity conditions, SHIMANO has developed the ultimate 203mm rotor with a radiator fin. This rotor is very effective in heat management. On top of the Ice tech sandwich construction the radiation effect cools the rotor an extra 50 degrees Celsius. The result is 20% more stopping power than the Ice technologies rotor without a fin. As we like to say, “The new SAINT brakes have the stopping power of a pine tree without the lengthy stay in the hospital”.

Shimano SAINT pedals 2013
Concave shaped flat pedal For even more control and pedaling efficiency, SHIMANO has developed a new concave shaped flat pedal. The SAINT pedal is 3mm wider and has a lower profile (-8.5mm) than the previous pedal. The pedal possesses an excellent mud shedding design featuring new style replaceable pins while maintaining the proven axle durability of its predecessors.

im loving the brakes, they look like a great alternative to elixirs and such. And Ive heard that the xtr's, which use a similar design, work super well.

Yeah, Im pretty sure they use the same lever design, im not so sure about the caliper though.
  • 6 2
it's a more evil looking xtr for sure!
  • 53 3
"Stopping power of a pine tree" LOVE IT!
  • 50 13
Not too be a hater, but i like the old style better, and the old style look a lot stronger! I'm going too get nag props for this!
  • 8 2
I want to see a pic of the calipers too!
  • 10 8
I 100% agree with you dhmountain
  • 21 3
Does anyone else feel like the older shifter pods looked way sicker. And the older levers?
  • 7 1
Yeah, I'm going to miss the looks of the old stuff, the design on those was really cool and i loved the gold. That said, this stuff looks amazing, I can't wait to try it out.
  • 4 2
amaziing stuff but i still have a question. Why the switch on the rear mec... i understand the benifit of it when it is activated. But why do we have the option to turn it off...is there something an advantage to not have it activated? if you need to turn it off sometimes...what is the bad stuff when in "on" mode...!?
  • 8 2
you only really need to turn it off to remove the wheel. otherwise you leave it on.
  • 3 1
Man those are some of the cleanest looking parts ive ever seen

flag finnrambo (Apr 18, 2012 at 22:23) (Below Threshold)
from what I read you need to switch it off to change gear? at least going from the 11 to the 28 I think
  • 3 6
HEY every one go check out www.ridesaint.com/main.html for better pictures and more info on the new stuff!
  • 3 1
finnrambo no the switch is ONLY there to remove the wheel. If you leave it activated, you just CAN'T move the cage by hand (well you probably could, with one or 2 buddies holding the bike), and therefore can't removethe wheel.
  • 3 0
I love pretty much all of it, but come on, a shifter made of plastic? wouldnt it feel really cheap and shit?
  • 2 0
i'm keen to try those brakes and see how they compare to the formula the ones. which are also ridiculously powerful.
  • 4 0
Those are one set of cranks that ill wan't to have foot rub on.
  • 1 0
have you seen the calipers though? looks like sonic had a secret love child with the old saint calipers.... i know theyre there for a purpose but come on
  • 3 0
its so boring the thing that made last years saint good was the cool hints of gold .. now there isnt any just says saint .. i think the new zee is going to be alot more common than saint next year especially since the only difference between the brakes are cooling fins ( ^sonic's secret love child ^) and tbh id rather have the new raceface cranks ...
  • 1 0
Same I'd rather go for the cheaper Zee than the Saint ... especially if you consider that it's roughly the same weight, performs more or less the same, just you don't have some funky gadgets (that may be useful ! I don't know) ... And it's 30% to 50% cheaper.
  • 1 1
Haha, surprised they don't call it "Zee PLUS." damn it shitmano!
  • 1 0
they should have saint SPD pedal as well . . . it's how Gee done it Big Grin
  • 3 0
More importantly, why 10 speed? no one except shimano's marketing team thinks downhill bikes need yet more gears.
  • 1 0
Will the new Saint and Zee mechs work with older 9 speed shifters?
  • 1 0
thanks for correcting me on the derailleur answer ploutre, why bother with a lever though? why not put a hex screw instead your going to need hex keys to undo the axle anyway...
  • 1 0
Not if you're using a maxxle or QR axle, you wouldn't need any tool, it's easy to use even with gloved finger. And it adds a hint of gold maybe ?
  • 30 3
COME ON! Bring some gold to spice it up.
  • 6 0
ya, definatly gonna miss that, added a nice accent
  • 4 0
i agree!! not as good looking! but hopefully what they lack in sexyness, then make up for in performance!
  • 1 4
www.ridesaint.com/main.html these picts suck. check out the ride saint web site for better pictures
  • 22 3
EWEWEWEWEWEWE THEY KILLED THE PURE SEXYNES OF SAINT!
  • 3 0
Awwww crap....what am I a nerd? I was most impressed by the rotors. Not to say the rest of the group isn't sweet. But those finely machined cooling fins are amazing!
  • 30 14
it looks cheap if u ask me
  • 10 1
If they're used right, they'll be worn and and paint-chipped within a year. Looks aren't very important in this gruppo, mostly strength, which they can most certainly live up to.
  • 9 0
although this is true, they still look much cheaper than the previous Saint group.
  • 13 1
agree, previous products looked much better, but when it comes to performance, design don't really matter
  • 9 1
I think the stuff looks sharp. Mech looks killer, brakes as well.......the crank graphic is not an improvement over the previous version....nor do i like the lack of visible chain-ring bolts.
  • 4 3
I'd take the rear mech, that's about it..
  • 8 0
This is the cheap version. New gruppo called Zee. Cheaper alternative but still looks really solid. www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=441178949231636&set=a.141210282561839.26067.138472649502269&type=1&theater
  • 5 1
I had the complete opposite impression. I love the simplistic look that hey have going
  • 6 1
I'd rather they give a raise to the R&D guys than the ''artistic consultant''.
  • 4 0
seriously fuck 10 speed this year I'm going to ride 4 speed because the other gears are needless in downhill.. My opinion
  • 9 3
I think Saint Group will be a very strong alternative like old times, no doubt. But look at that rotor, amazingly SEXY! Of course time will show how they gonna perform, but this rotor is one of the best looking one of all times, I think.
  • 6 0
 "more silent than previous generations"
lol pretty sure you can't get any quieter than silent Razz

Those rotors look amazing, wonder if that will trickle down to other groupos or sizes.

And for those of you who might think that a single digit percentage wouldn't make a difference in the feel of the shifter levers might want to think again. Little changes in ergonomics make a huge difference.
  • 7 0
I love Shimano, I have had both generations of saint thus far and I only hope that Shimano goes into the replacement body part business so I can buy a Shimano heart and knees when mine wear out.
  • 6 0
function over form folks. Didnt know the rest of the dh'ers where so obsessed with looks......most of my new stuff is scratched/dented, or ruined after the 1st race anyway....
  • 25 0
Downhillers not obsessed with looks?!? You know you're on Pinkbike right?
  • 2 0
 lol , fair point.
  • 5 0
Man, I love technology. Its just so cool. Say what you want about the aesthetics of it, there is some really neat stuff going on here. Mode converters, friction clutches, single finger brakes... With that said, that rotor looks absolutely badass.
  • 4 0
I love the rotor! yet, when will they drop some gears and bring on like an eight speed or something. Maybe l'm wrong but aren't most of the pros using modified cassettes using like 5 or six cogs? The rear D is nice looking and Im sure the brakes are like, well, running into a tree.
  • 2 0
You can always chop a cassette and utalize the limit screws man. I turned my 10 speed into a 4 speed with a 13-16 spread. Anything is possible
  • 1 1
or you can just buy an 8 speed cassette and shifter
  • 2 1
I put longer limit screws on my 10 speed derailleur and got it down to a two-speed cassette: 13-16. Super tight, at the races the Pro's are all checking out my setup.
  • 2 1
 YO!
Thass sick dude.
Isnt the jump from 13-16 too much of a gap though?
  • 9 2
Need longer pins on those pedals....
  • 9 2
older cranks were so much sexier.

Batman called he wants his rotors back Shimano
  • 6 2
the eighties called they want their joke back.
  • 2 2
more modern: Batman posted on Shimano's facebook wall, "I want my rotors back."
  • 1 0
 Hey Butlerssecret, Knock Knock.
  • 1 0
Just to satisfy my own curiosity, who's there?
  • 1 0
I got nothin bro, I lost my book of 80s hit classic jokes in a yard sale.
  • 4 1
10 speed on a dh bike....hmmm and for the fashionpolice I was also rather partial to the Black Gold Silver Theme. Let us Hope that rumours are true and that Hope will release a rear mech with their cassette this summer
  • 3 0
they should make a special 7 speed drive train
  • 2 0
I love the brakes, I've been waiting a year for these to come out, I'm going to bag some.

Re: The rear mech. If the clutch stops the arm moving forward, does that mean that the suspension on certain designs will become less active? When the suspension compresses on my Konig, the rear mech moves forward. Will this new mech allow that to happen? I read that the force of changing gear pulls it forward, so I would guess that the same will be the case for suspension movement, but there must be some additional friction which will reduce the effectiveness of the suspension, at least on small impacts.

I might swicth over anyway because I love the 2-way release on my wife's bike. As some others said I'd like to see a 6,7, or 8 speed version. If we're all using five or six, why are they still ramming ten down our throats?
  • 2 0
Hmm with those new pedals, I wonder whether (and hope that) the M647 clipless pedals will get an overhaul? I mean they're great, but they could be much better regarding the cage and all. Would go nice if it had a SAINT accent to it as well
  • 4 0
I like previous cranks for the polished look, other than that everything looks solid.
  • 4 0
this will be available before 2013 right? could kinda use some new parts. sram x.0 does not last to long!!
  • 5 1
wow Im glad my bike is being built now, and then in 2 months all new shit comes out.
  • 3 0
same with me bro got saints on my commencal 2 weeks ago then this comes out
  • 1 0
Exactly the same with me right now...
  • 4 0
good idea on the radiators on the rotors. that will keep temperatures in check.
  • 5 0
let me ask how many people use 10 gears for DH. A big fat ZERO
  • 6 0
It's like the razor blade market, they did 3 blades, let's do 4, fuck it we're doing 7 blades. It's brinksmanship and a pissing match.
  • 6 0
I'm running 10 speed for DH, it's truly pointless. Just one more gear I will never use...
  • 1 0
mblakey I agree. I tell you what would take real balls, going back to 6 or 7 speed. Whoever does that first with their gravity setup is going to have a year absolutely wiping the floor with the opposition.
  • 1 0
Gross. Im stocking up on 9 speed parts for when I run out of 8 speed cassettes. Hopefully the '11 saint stuff. Will get blown out at the end of the season. Actually, the pedals look pretty slick. I may have already put my feet on em. Sticky.
  • 2 0
Actually, shimano would make things weaker. The original saint axle mounted derailleur was too beefy and sales dropped so they changed it. (thats what our shimano rep told me)
  • 1 0
my experience of the first generation Saint groupset

a "pedalled too fast and missed the landing transition" crash on Whistler's Clown Shoes final drop that snapped my frame and destroyed the rear wheel, tire, right shifter, cassette and disc rotor and the rear derailleur, plus bent the rear 150mm x 12mm through axle

ap1.pinkbike.org/p4pb545508/p4pb545508.jpg
  • 1 0
Brutal, that said, all things do break. That said, the axel mounted derailleur was significantly stronger than the current generation of saint, much like the pre shadow xtr on my all mountain bike has outlived the shadow on my XC. I really dont see the need for a 10sp dh group. There is no way to make things stronger while narrowing the chain, cassette rings, pulley-cage, etc. They are creating a system that may work better when in top order, but is much more prone to catastrophic failure. No more making due with a derailleur that is slightly bent, the tolerances are too small.
  • 1 0
Kinda bummed about the 32 max tooth for the rear mech. I was hoping to run one with my 1x10 36T setup. I guess you must need a medium cage for that kind of range. Also, too bad that they haven't gone with a 9T small cog setup yet, so we continue to wait.
  • 1 0
As a fan of the old DX pedals, and the original DX from the 80's I'm pumped to see the new flat pedal.... but I can't believe that, AGAIN, they have decided to install some ridiculously short pins in the pedals at the factory and leave the consumer to remove them all and install the properly long pins that are supplied in the box! Why Shimano, why?
  • 1 0
 sweet memories!
  • 1 0
I didnt read ALL the post above so i dont know if anyone said this but I hope the brakes are quieter than the 810s. they where awesome but soooo loud i had to get rid of them. Just couldnt stand it. Shimano reps. at a race couldnt even get them to stop squeeling. Seemed like a 50/50 chance. Loud or not. a lot of people seemed to have the same problem. Well they CANT get any louder, that for sure.
  • 4 1
Wouldn't the stiffer derailleur spring/clutch mechanism create more resistance in the movement of the rear suspension?
  • 2 1
no. the spring on your shock resists the movement of your rear suspension, compare it to the size of a mechs torsion spring. as for the clutch, it needs to allow enough movement for the gear to be changed without putting to much tension in the chain. the frictional force is negligable compared to the force going through the rear sus. someone feel free to word that better
  • 1 2
shock=big spring, mech=tiny spring, if the suspension can push a shock it can push a derailleur
  • 1 0
 thats the one.
  • 1 0
The chain slapping around must create really iregular forces coming from the derailleur.
  • 1 0
all looks aside, the stats on the shifter & the rotor in particular are pretty freakin' impressive... cooling your rotor by 50 degrees..! that's an advantage whether you race or not...
  • 5 1
Im sure "cooling your rotor by 50 degrees" is just a marketing hype with no engineering behind it. So if you get to the bottom of the hill, and your rotors are 50 degrees, these ones will be at 0 degrees?
  • 1 0
i think they meant up to 50 degrees...
  • 1 0
Nice point! It's the new refrigerator rotor for cooling our beers...he-he... Anyway, bypass the hype, it's a good idea and design...Weights for all these parts, are welcome also...
  • 1 0
Yea it looks like a good idea. However, you don't see fins like this on moto GP bikes or F1 cars. Maybe a more clever solution would be to develop a rotor/pad combination that can handle high temperatures without reduced performance?
  • 3 0
 10 Speed for Downhill????????????????????????????? Why?
wake up, make a 6 speed version shimano!!!!
  • 1 0
I love my SRAM stuff, but if Shimano keeps this up I might be won over. I love the clutch system, so silent, but if its as tempermental as the last saint groupo, then I will stick with SRAM.
  • 1 0
Brakes look the business and judging by new xt , xtr stoppers will do their jobs but the rest of the stuff will no doubt perform very well but look so dull , maybe shimano need some colour in their lives Smile
  • 1 0
Wow I've been waiting to see what the new Saint line looks like. I was going to make a trip to Sea Otter to see the unrevealing. This is a nice peak a boo. Thanks PinkBike!!!
  • 4 0
 the pedals are pathetic
  • 1 0
Rotor looks great but center lock only & no 180mm....
I have way more issues with heat affecting the rear brake, fading, glazing....etc.
  • 1 0
Loving it all except the cranks. Can you use M810 (9spd) double chainset with the newer (10 spd) chain, cassette and rear derailleur?
  • 2 0
Look Awesome! I Would Love to see how it compares to sream X.0 and last years saint Smile
  • 11 8
Bye SRAM , it was nice knowing you. (actually.. not really)
  • 5 2
the m810/815 stuff looks much better in my opinion.
  • 5 1
 EWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWE
  • 4 3
NOPE, denied. only the pedals look good. other than that I like the M810 group way more than this. but not planning to buy any of it so doesn't matter.
  • 2 0
the rotor.....ummmm. !! i personally liked the old version of the brake levers, though
  • 2 0
Looks good! I'm impressed with what Shimano has done. Its still not going to switch me over from a Sram guy though Wink lol
  • 2 0
I wish the kept the brake leavers the crome. The colour makes them look like the saint before the current one.
  • 3 0
are they making a medium cage mech for 36 tooth cassettes?
  • 1 0
 I hope they do ...
  • 1 0
i realy realy want that group set but i dont fancy taking out a bank loan to get it it well out of the reach of mear mortal riders like my self think ill go xt/xtr
  • 2 0
too much xtr in them, the older set looked better, except the rear mech and the disc. They're awesome
  • 3 0
FFS, I don't want 10 speed. a saint 6 speed would be better.
  • 1 0
You could buy a wide range cassette and chop the top 4 rings off leaving you with six speed. Gives you wider jumps between gears so it doesn't take 10 clicks to get an easier gear after blowing a corner. I am currently doing this with 9 speed with the top two cogs removed with the help of a grinder. I like it a lot better than a road cassette.
  • 4 3
hate that new lever, looks too much like all the other levers shimano has out
  • 2 0
Kinda bummed there is no mention of a wheelset yet =/
  • 1 0
Judging from Gee's last season I wouldn't be so keen yet.

  • 1 0
Nice, nice and nice i like all product of Saint becouse they look just amazing!
  • 1 0
I just find it stupid that companies release all their 2013 products before the year has practically started!!
  • 2 0
I think it looks pretty sick, just doesn't look as beefy as the old stuff
  • 3 3
Just because it doesn't look 'beefy' doesn't mean it isn't. After all it says "SAINT" on it. How 'beefy' do you want to go?
  • 5 0
Thats why i said "it doesn't LOOK as beefy," I'm sure shimano wouldn't put out a product that wasn't just as strong, if not stronger than the old stuff. My point is the ascetics that are associated with downhill products and people usually want them to look like they can take a beating, whether or not they can is a different issue, which I'm sure they can
  • 1 0
Hey man I ain't got no beef with you Wink

Ascetics are important I will give you that.
  • 1 0
These look like the bees knees! Especially that crazy finned rotor. 2013 awaits!

where's the picture of the new brake calipers?
  • 1 0
Welp, looks like it's time to upgrade
  • 1 0
Soooooooo sick I wanna run those parts ssoooo bad!
  • 1 1
as if saint couldn't get better 0_o wow Shimano is always stepping up the game. really impressed with the new line up.
  • 1 0
 man, those are so nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 1 1
It would be nice if they actually stepped up to the plate to offer a 100mm BB option finally... like SRAM and FSA offer...
  • 2 0
Is it 2004 again? Do I need to buy a Giant Team DH?
  • 1 0
can you buy these yet ???
  • 1 0
july is what they are saying
  • 1 0
wow. want these complete saint group on my next bike
  • 1 0
Can someone confirm this: SAINT rear derailleur (RD-M820): 280 gr ?
  • 1 0
no more (f*cking) ball bearings? hahahaha
  • 1 0
Is there a medium cage rear mech for 2X10 AM setups?
  • 1 0
Why did they have to go and ruin something beautiful
  • 1 0
steezy!! my goodness that rotor is spectacular
  • 1 0
8 years later and this is still the newest saint update...
  • 2 1
 Pretty shore it's 10sp
  • 4 1
"...SHIMANO has developed the new SAINT 10 speed rear derailleur with a SHADOW+ RD."

Was that part unclear?
  • 1 0
 Want the pedal.
