Although a fairly large number of blogs have already been published on the subject of the Sea Otter Downhill, I'll add mine to the pool.
Jared Graves, during the Dual Slalom finals on Saturday, asked the photographers to back off. I think this may have been exactly what he was asking us not to do... *sheepishly looks around* I'm glad it didn't slow him down one bit- he still won by over 4 seconds.
The pro-line in past years has been this double into the berm. Ryan Condrashoff making it look eeaaasy! I didn't see it, but I was told that on their race runs, some of the pros were actually tripling into the berm from about a bike length further back.
This odd turn had the only rock garden on the entire course- the Sea Otter DH course is fast and smooth.
I don't want to be the one to jinx it, but the Sea Otter curse has been lifted. The last 3 years it's been sunshine and DUST, though until then, the pro race was a downpour without fail.
It wouldn't be a Downhill race without the odd arse hanging out, would it? This berm had a small but devoted crowd, until they decided there weren't quite enough people watching them. It's better that way, sometimes.
Alright... I didn't take this one, but my mom got a good capture of what might be the scariest crash at this Otter. The poor kid ended up bruised and battered, but he was all right- I wonder if the same can be said for his mom.
Well, there's my showing for the Sea Otter Classic 2011... until next year!
