Four years ago, cross country racing was dying, World Cup downhills were hidden in far-away Europe, and slopestyle contests had yet to hit their stride. Back then, freeride was surging and the Red Bull Rampage was its premier event.
Bender competed, so did Gracia, Atherton, Simmons and Strait. Media flocked to the steep desert canyons outside Virgin, Utah. Movies were made. Even NBS made an appearance.
But after a successful four-year run, Red Bull pulled the plug on the event in 2004. But this October, Rampage returns to the Utah desert. The canyons once again will offer drops and technical lines, but this year's contest promises more progressive, sculpted jumps and drops.
A lot has changed in four years. Downhill racing is growing. Endurance races and festivals are popular. Freeride is no longer the only game in town. Or maybe it was just taking a brea, recuperating until the Rampage returned. There's only one way to find out. This year's rampage takes place October 2 to 5.
