Crankworx 2009 - Slopestyle Course Overview

Practice was taking place today so I took a couple moments to update you guys on what the Slopestyle course is like this year. Without further ado I present the 2009 Crankworx Slopestyle course.

Click here for pictures of the Slopestyle course...Designed by John Cowan, the Kokanee Crankworx Slopestyle course has a pretty neat layout this year. Consisting of drops, wall rides, gaps, booters, hips, and one big hucker gap. All being displayed on the megatron and filmed for a live feed for your viewing pleasure.

Slopestyle Course Overview

Starting at the top riders have to drop in from a kicker roll in assembly. Its got one heck of a gnarly lip on it and a couple of riders have already tricked off of it. This is the first part of the course, which lines riders up directly into a big step up jump.

Drop in

After dropping in you ride into a big setup up jump, arguably one of the first jumps to throw big tricks on. Its got one big wooden lip on it, and a massive landing for people throwing tricks.

After the second jump riders are prompted with a couple different line choices. The Kokanee wall ride provides two options, one is to hit the wall ride and carry over to the Giro box line which is the riders choice right now. The second is to air the wall ride like a quarter pipe, something I saw a couple riders doing.

Wooden kicker after step down line to get on Giro box

After the wall ride you're setup for the Giro box. The Giro box is a big step up and drop off setup that features some gnarly print on the side of it! This setup puts you into a perfect position for the next line, which is into either a hip jump or the Kona wall ride, both with big potential for awesome tricks.

After you drop off the Giro box you're setup inline with a hip jump option and the Kona wall ride. The Kona wall ride this year features some gnarly graphics, and is perfect for some flairs, flips, or possibly whips. Directly behind the quarter pipe section of the Kona wall ride is the landing for the hip gap, a perfect landing for flip tricks. Keep your eyes peeled, saw a couple riders hitting this line today.

Once you're done on the Kona wall ride you move down the mountain towards the red booter jump. This red booter jump consists of two specific lines. The easier option is a step up to ladder ride to drop off, a pretty basic line for professional riders. The second option is to just send the complete gap, and hope to slow down in time for the next stunt. I didn't see a single rider hit the gap today, but they could be holding out for qualifying!

Once you're done on the SRAM death booter or ladder drop you slow it down big time for a combination of three lines. 1 being the Mavic in and out jump (think bowl), and the other two are sniper drops setup on the Race Face box. These three jumps are not big by any means, but are nice style jumps or small trick jumps, in the setup for the two big last stunts.

After you get past the triple option set up you are into the biggest dirt jump on the course. This is a massive step up jump that sets you up for the big Kokanee end drop. This step up jump has a super steep lip, tame landing, designed for busting big tricks on it right in front of the crowd. A ton of riders were going off on this jump today, but Cam threw down a butter smooth Backflip for the lens!

The final stunt is a step up, step down jump that is the crowd pleaser. With the landing coming right out into the crowd's hands, this stunt was designed to strike fear into the eyes of us viewers, while still being a reasonable size for these professionals to hit. It's going to be interesting to see what happens on this jump, however no one could do anything on it today as the landing was blocked off.

From what I have heard the course is a little bit more tame compared to last year, but still reasonably sized gaps, and unique obstacles. Tomorrow is supposed to bring rain, rain, and more rain, so hopefully we will get a chance to shoot some riding shots without getting soaked!

Cheers!
Jordan.

Yea, If the jumps and drops are too big, they re un-trick able! All the riders 2years were hatting the last drop and it was F*?king dangerious, even for pros. Thats why they`ve toned it down since then.

dtrain is right ... 2 years ago, too big, the bikes were hitting the ground like a bag of concrete, lots of hurt riders ... last year was way better and this year looks great ... cya on the decks

looks good, the stunts do seem smaller this year, but i suppose that will make for better tricks.
  • 9 2
i think the last step up step down actually looks bigger this year and then theres the huge death gap...
  • 6 0
alot of flash and advertising this year
  • 6 2
Yeah, too much colors...It does look nice though. Go Mike Montgomery! And the McCaul Brothers!
  • 3 2
The kokanee step up at the end is the same as last year...they're reusing it. The death gap is just huge to the point no one has hit it...I think that says something. This should be the best crankworx yet!

I like all the colours, makes the course look extra sick
  • 3 3
The so called death gap isn't that big! It's just impossible to stop after...

to missingwhistler, i think they may have spaced it out a bit more

kicker on looks less steep too,all in all the course looks mint, mike will probably throw down some big moves, probably unseen or unlanded ever before. the graphics on the course are sick and make it interesting enough. the boneyard is alive and ready to be shreded
  • 2 1
 Soderstrom is gonna win!
  • 1 0
they will both probably be throwing double whips on some big jumps.
  • 1 1
 fyi, it is adieu
  • 2 0
Adieu means farewell in French. Without further ado is the right expression.

Can't wait to see the winners, their runs are going to be sick whoever it is.
  • 1 1
some of those gaps arent gonna get hit unless someone actually hhas to.
  • 1 0
 sick but where's the gap-o-tron
  • 4 1
its getting smaller and smaller. still big stuff like the last jump. but the last stunt is smaller than it was 2 years ago. and there is that quarter thing. if I remember right. the black one they had a few years back were bigger. i hate how things are getting smaller just because its easier to throw big tricks on. i like the 360 ben boyko made on the last stunt 2 years ago more than i like most of the tricks that people have thrown down on the last stunt these two years.
  • 1 0
 i agree
  • 9 1
Problem is if the jumps are too big no one's going to try anything new.
Two years ago course was huge but contest was kind of boring 'cause riders were too scared to try anything. Lets save the big stuff for Rampage Smile
  • 3 0
i see you guys arent from b.c. have you been there in person to see the course? evryone said it was all smalled last year it was f*cking huge and its still f*cking huge. even the last drop, its huge. wayy bigger then you can imagine from looking at pics.
  • 1 0
yea konad is right. that second jump too is like amazinggly huge
  • 2 0
yea everything is just alot more dialed in now, like takeoffs and landings etc,the riders are more comfortable to do there tricks on a smooth course, still lots of hard slams, still realy big and risky, the last drop in 2007 certainly wasnt smooth alot of guys were still doing big stuff on it but eating shit,so now they have the course smoother but not realy smaller, some drops are just a few feet smaller its not a big deal.
  • 1 0
i compeltly agree with konad this course looks wy better then pasts one and their is going to be a way better variety of tricks going down because the course is a bit smaller then past years but much nicer for those biger tricks so im super stoked to watch the live feed because brandon semenuk and cam mcaul are going to thrw it down and either one will win
  • 1 0
If you want to see big drops watch ramopage. this is a slopestyle contest it's not about big drops or gaps its abaout doing insane tricks!
  • 4 1
I think the course looks so rad. Unique obstacles will make for such a rad comp.

And I disagree that this course is small. I rode the boneyard last year and very, very few people hit all the obstacles. This stuff is way gnarlier in real life. For example, the giro box is like what, a 12-15 foot drop? And they are going to be doing threes and whips off it consistently. Sure its not a 40' rampage stepdown, but slopestyle is meant for tricks not just sending.

WOW! the course has come a long way since i was there a week ago. We all thought the course was pretty scattered but now that its all their its amazing. I got to watch the guy do a bunch of the artwork on the spot, really amazing for a guy with a rattle can!

is it just me, or is that last stunt the exact same as last year with the takeoff moved back a little? Not that I'm complaining, I thought it was rad back then too! That first hit to drop in's pretty do or die too.

Hope I get there in time, I'm flying out on saturday
  • 1 0
haha the last thing i was thinking when i looked at this years course was small. the "roll in" is pretty gnar, all the jumps are huge. the sram death gap (not a very original name but o well) is giant. and did you all see the gap between the take off and landing on the final step up? the skinnys are unique it's going to be a sick comp!
