  This is one bike that we expect to see completely sideways throughout the next few days. Thomas Vanderham is using Shimano's prototype chain guide on his Rocky Mountain Flatline.

Mike Hopkins
  Mike Hopkins' machine won't be easily misplaced out in the desert. His day-glo Norco Aurum is running Marzocchi suspension front and rear.

Tyler McCaul
  Another GT Fury, this one from Tyler McCaul. Like many other riders at Rampage, his bike is spec'd with an air shock.

  Brandon Semenuk and Aaron Gwin both seem to like it black. Semenuk's custom painted Session is equipped with BlackBox suspension front and rear - note the prototype Vivid out back and the 'BlackGold' treated stanchions of his BoXXer fork. Just like Rheeder's Session, his 9.9 also seems to have slightly different seat stays than what's found on the stock bike.

  No one knows how Crankworx winner Thomas Genom is going to take to the vastly different setting of the Rampage site, but we wouldn't bet against him. Check his rear shifter that is mounted to the Merida's seat collar, as well as the extra rear brake housing.

  Best looking bike of Rampage? Kenny Smith's Specialized Demo gets the BlackBox suspension treatment.

  The Claw is rocking Specialized's Status, a slightly shorter and taller option compared to the Demo. He's also using a Mozart chain guide, not a brand that we see a lot of. While most riders have gone with downhill-dedicated brakes, Darren runs Shimano's XTR stoppers paired with an eight-inch rotor up front and a seven-inch in the rear.

Soderstrom was on a flyer of a run at Crankworx until a massive spill on the final move, so expect him to unleash the Kraken here in the desert.

  Chris Van Dine is on Yeti's carbon fiber 303wc, a machine that we saw Graves using at World Cup races this season. The carbon front end features very similar lines to the 'standard' 303wc. Hidden up against the seat tube is the bike's vertical rail that the swingarm-mounted shuttle travels up and down on.

 ^^^^^ seriously aye... this is by far the most I've ever seen. And not only that it's actually a pretty awesome idea along with being funny... I'd LOVE to see a rundown on everything that failed and what survived cause there were some EPIC wrecks this year (SO glad nobody got too seriously hurt too...) and I would be interested to see what the bikes looked like afterwards. The massive over-shoot on the Norco Aurum is tops on my curiosity list aye.

Anyone know what the actual "record + props."number is just curious out of curiosity??? I'm guessing that Protour holds the Neg pr record Wink Where is that guy??? I miss him. It was like having a crazy racist grandfather with Alzheimers: you never know what he's gonna say next, you just know it's gonna be painfull and you'd rather not be in the room when it goes down. (Edit: ww I just scrolled down and to my surprise, he's got sme positive props!!!! Cinderella Story comin outa NOWHERE!!!!!)

 speaking of messere and groves using the loki, doesn't seem like the downhill prototype morpheus is working out as planned. If they were going to use it anywhere it'd be here. they're scared thay sketchy shock linkage will snap i bet, but hey i could be wrong maybe their individual lines will make a slopestyle bike work

 At least Messere is running dh tires. I'm surprised nobody is running real big tires, like 2.8's or so. Seems like it might help traction, but I guess everyones a weight weenie these days.

 A small light bike with less suspension is going to be easier to throw around. The primary point of suspension is to keep you wheels on the ground and in control, not big jumps. A 4x or slope style bike can work just fine if they pick the right line.

 ^ exactly. comes down to how much you weigh. if you're as light as anthony you don't absolutely need a full-on dh rig. I don't know why everyones questioning why the best riders in the world are using the components they chose (Air shocks, single crowns, Freeride/slope frames over DH rigs). They know what they're doing and how they plan on riding the terrain to best suit their riding style.

 Except for the time Intense built them a DH bike, Haro has failed miserably every time they tried to make a sophisticated DH bike. So they just settled on keeping expectations low. They really are the worst somewhat big brand out there when it comes to full suspension bikes...quite simply, a terrible legacy that lives on somehow.

 Watts' Haro is a joke, hahaha, just laughably poor looking. That sexy Fox fork can't even make it look nicer. I also think Semenuk's bike looks terrible. Maybe just cause of the red dust but something looks off. Maybe because Rock shox need to get rid of that terrible black Boxxer. It looks god awful. I thought we learned that black stanchions are no good from Marzacchi. Kenny's bike would look so much sicker without the Zellers looking fork.

 Watts is riding a shift series frame, and yes Haro did abandon all their full suspension bikes, and all their upper level hardtails as well as fired longtime brand manager and former Pro DH racer, Jill hamilton a few years ago.

 Firing the brand manager and deciding they wanted to be a BMX brand primarily and seeing the mtb/hybrid lines as merely another source of income is how. They were also one of the first brands to offer production 650B bikes, and then when they fired Jill (who had pushed for their development), they were amongst the models axed. I see Haro becoming the next Walmart brand at the rate they're running the company now.

 it's unlikely to be a stock frame for these guys anyway, but mttantico took the words right out of my mouth! status is just a shorter wheelbase too, should make it a less unruly bike to trick... besides, when you stick the gear these guys have on there the weight difference would be negligable! they'll be running a really progressive shock rate too, so the quality of the linkages isn't exactly as important for control... just needs to suck up the hits so their nuts don't have to

 ^ Exactly, check out this review from a few weeks back which basically raves about the geometry of the bike. www.pinkbike.com/news/Specialized-Status-II-Tested-2012.html I don't believe for a second that anyone would ride this terrain on anything other than the bike they think they are going to do best on (provided it's made by the guys that pay them of course). Plus, it's not exactly the status that you and I could walk in to a shop and buy, it's a status frame with s werx parts.

 According to Martin, the status has a shorter chainstay and tighter geometry allowing for easier tricks i guess, but to me nothing they does seems easy for an average joe..

 The status is the perfect bike for this, not only does it handle quite similar to a demo, but it floats, and pops much better then a demo, it may be a cheap frame, but it sure doesn't ride like one, I'm actually happy I chose the status over the demo since I was going to build a demo instead, the status is much funner to ride, it's just a bit slower in super rough flat out sections, but it handles better at slower speeds then a demo, plus the status ramps up quite a bit towards the end of the travel making big hits more manageable compared to the demo.

 Truth is the big DH rigs aren't every really designed for this kind of stuff. They are designed to be fast over rough terrain. That is why there is no v10 in these pics and why so many guys sacrificed travel for weight and wheel base.

 The thing is, that Martin Söderström is wrong about the Status having shorter chain stays. Look at the bike specs and you'll notice that the Status has 426 mm while the Demo 8 has 421 mm. Thank's to Jon Bokrantz being the first to point this out over at the discussion on Vital.

 Merida is very popular in Poland. They make good reliable bikes and you can see a lot of those driving around here.

I notice almost all of them are using Saint brakes, and quite a few guys using Spank rims. I've heard a lot of guys saying that Spank stuff is really good, and that their rims are actually better than the big names because the alloy used in the Spike rims is the shiznit.

I'm loving the black Demo, and Lacondeguy's YT - both totally pimp looking.

Kyle Strait still looks 15 to me, and Greg Watts looks like Warney!

 Kyle Strait deserves a handicap for riding that GT fury IMHO that bike has horrible geometry for a freeride bike of race bike for that matter ..such an odd feeling throwing a whip on one its like they have a anti whip gyroscope.id hate to be on that bike at rampage..kyles one of my favorite riders too bummer...

 The great thing about the world tour results being so close between Soderstrom and Semenuk is that both riders are going to be forced to ride at the peak of their ability, because neither want to lose. Shit is going to go down with those two going at each other on one of the biggest, gnarliest courses ever assembled. Cannot wait!

 will be pretty interesting too see how the status cope dose anyone know if they are using a bolt thru on them or if its the standard qr style?
i mean if one of these frames is gonna break here is the best chance of seeing it, as ive been looking at getting one but thought may be not as strong as others in the price bracket. weather its easyier to ride than the demo ect. or just a showboat of what the frame is capable of after reading the negitive comments about the standard qr back end, its got people talking about it.
same for that new sr suntour RUX fork. again interesting to see how they cope

 Mountain bikes are like ab machines. At frequent & regular intervals someone has come up with some new, goofy, gimmicky contraption just to push a shock in & out & move a wheel up & down, just to sell something new. Some of these things are ridiculous, like the Podium, Gambler & Demo & what's with the beer belly trend in recent years? Some of them look like their down tubes have been bent by the load applied through the shock. In the list above, my least favorite rider is on what I'd say is the nicest bike. Morewood wins it for me (or maybe the Status). I miss the days of the Intense M-1. So sleek, & elegant. Lean, clean & mean.

 It changes moment of inertia, i.e. how easily something is moved. In racing that means braking and accelerating. In freeride competitions it means whips, 360s and backflips!

 Söderström himself said it on his Twitter account that he chose the Status for the shorter chainstay and it being easier to trick than the Demo. I assume Claw did the same. But still, we've seen Claw riding Utah on an SX on WTTE, so I don't think doing so on the Status will be a problem for any of them.

 All's the Status frame is... Is a enlarged version of the old SX trail. Seems fitting they would choose it for this stuff. THe Demo is not really a Freeride sled anymore. More of a pure DH machine now. I think we will see a influx of the Status bikes on the trails soon enough.

 Honestl this is what I don't want to see in the rampage. Best bike here is the Karpiel WITH NO DOUBT! Everyone forgot the super monster's, richis etc... Everyone forgot the 12'' front and rear suspension bikes.
In this matter, downhill back to competition for the time and less to hardcore and huge jumps, drops or 90º trails. It's a shame. 03, 04, 05 rampages were the best and I think that I won't see anything like that again.

 Hey man, it's 02, 03 and 04... And don't forget the first one in 01 ! It will never happen again because every riders here want's to win the Rampage as another comp, and be safe at the end ! So they need to be sure to cross the finish line without falling down. And be easy to put som trix in the midle on the line, because this is what most of people are expecting to see !

 Actually I found that Karpiel the worst bike out there, completely garbage. And Freeride has evoluted, in what concerns the bikes and de riders' prespectives and riding styles/skills. No one will rock those kind of absurd bikes no more.

 Todays 160-180mm bikes can eat up as much as those old rampage over 200mm ridiculous tries like Bender's forks, proof of that being on Rampage 04 when Bender almost died trying a gap with his ridiculous fork and then a 17y old Kyle Strait on a Demo 8 with a Fox 40 (none of them over today's standard 200mm) came and did the same gap and threw a suicide no hander over it, landing it clean and safe.

And if you're telling me that Gee's airs and line fluidity and quarter transfer grand finale or Zink's 360 or, into this year, Fairclough's own canyon gap or Zink/CamMcaul idea of flipping the pre-built canyon gap are less exciting than those old Rampages they you're just going with the trend of "old is always better" without thinking or giving new even a chance.

 i ride a karpiel disco and o yea i have it set too 8.5 rear with 888 up front they made two long travel huck frames and i ride the race frame sorry but the disco had modern geomitry sinse 1999 and it seams like alot of bikes are running the suspension ideas o and i have never had a problem with anything karpiel is a good bike frame i send mine too hell and back every weekend its paint is gone but it still rides like the first day b4 you rat on em ride one first or atleast give it a good look

 ^ Yeah what that guy meant to say is forget the name, this Karpiel is part of the new breed. This is no Bender hucker. In fact, it's ultra adjustable and made with downhill racing geometry

 Yeah but that's just because Bender isn't particularly skilled. Oh sure he has more balls than practically anyone else in the sport, for launching himself off ridiculous stunts he hasn't a hope in hell of sticking the landings of, which looks great on camera (the crashing after that is, everyone loves to rubberneck a crash). Years ago one of the major magazines asked the question "Do you think Bender is a skilled rider", and universally the answer was "no" from all the top freeriders and pro DH riders they asked (and there were some really big names asked). Hucking off the deck of a patio over a railing and dropping thirty feet to flat into a paved parking lot doesn't show much in the way of skill.

 What I mean is, the meaning of this event, the base itself is the hucking. The start of this event was that, big jumps and etc. Now it's all about nice tricks and fast corners and etc. It's the same as UCI with little more vertical angles. I'm saying that this event was made for HUGE bikes, for a BIG BALLED guys. Everyone knows the all bender's runs and will remember the Rampage as an impossible run to do.

 RicardoES, so you're saying the almost 80 footer Mike Hopkins took himself out with yesterday or Fairclough's own canyon gap or, if he ends up doing it, Zink's canyon gap flip are any less gnarly or the riders have less balls than previous Rampages? The "hughe" airs and hucks of past Rampages (aside from Bender's ridiculous hucks that almost always ended in crashes) are now the standard, mid run, "do it to fill in while you get to you real hit" features. I don't see any less balls or an array of small bikes. In fact, besides Groves' and Messere's bikes (and maybe Wats') all the rest hover around the 200mm mark front and back, which is the same or more than they used to be.

 Because you'll find that you have much better control over your bike in technical terrain with the seat properly between your legs as opposed to slammed to the ground, also its easier to pinch for tricks. And would you want to run out of gears pedaling into a 60 ft gap? didn't think so...

 Yep, need the gears to have the right speed for some of the jumps. If you've never ridden in desert conditions, sand / dry dirt will rob a LOT of speed in a hurry, even after you drop off the side of a mountain.
