Big Winds and Big Tires at the 2016 USA Fat Bike Nationals

For the second year in a row, the Fat Bike Nationals were held at Powder Mountain, Utah. With the forecast calling for cloudy skies and a chance for snow it was a treat to have sunny skies the entire day. Big winds picked up and were blowing hard making the riders struggle with a headwind most of the race. Different from last year, all tents and spectators were moved down to the starting line. It was nice to have them together this year and gave it a better vibe as far as bringing the spectators, food, racers and families together. There were plenty of demo fat bikes to be tested for adults and even kids.

Racers were put up against some non-stop winds all day including a headwind that I am sure slowed a lot of competitors down. There was a lot of excitement at the finish line for the Pro Men, as just feet before the finish line rider Robert Squire, with a bike length lead over Alex Grant, suddenly slipped out and crashed. Alex had to swerve to miss him and snatched the win. It seems like they were both good sports about it. In addition to the excitement, the wind had plans to keep things spicy at the award ceremony and blew 5 or so tents out of the crowd hundreds of feet down the hill. Lucky no one was hurt and awards proceeded without a hitch.

Although it seemed like there were less spectators this year due to the grim weather forecast, there were still plenty of people who showed up and it was a fun atmosphere.

The Turner boys showed up and stoked as always for a good race.

Last year the tents were all in the parking lot. This year they were right at the finish line which was nice for a more put together feel for spectators and racer alike.

This berm was somewhat difficult for a lot of riders this race. More than one rider went down here. These guys charged it no problem.

It was down to the last few feet with Robert Squire in the lead by a few feet when he slid out. Alex Grant was able to snatch the win by feet. It was pretty intense.

Good sportsmanship between these two. It was a battle to the last 10 feet.

what are you supposed to do with the fat bike when you ski down?
  • 25 1
It gets donated to Yukon Cornelius.
  • 24 2
Maybe its skin up and ride down? uh.... hmmm.... Maybe if I smoke a little bit more meth it will all make sense.
  • 6 1
lots of places where riding would be a faster way to get up to a good skinning spot, I know some people in Montana who have been trying it out!

Maybe you use it to access back country trails by first riding up roads that are closed and snow covered. Or you ride it up on the last day of good snow and leave the fatbike until next years first snow

There's a fanny pack that comes with the skis for you to put the bike in while you ski.

 Fat Bike Lefty! Whatever next!

Fat bike lefty indeed, I want one now.....

 Leave it! hahahahha

I'd think it's not for biking to the top of your ski run, but to bike from your door to the lifts (or the start of the skin track). Looks awesome, but I'd never use it. I can just imagine how comfy a pair of ski boots would be dangling around your neck.

Touring boots that are clip compatible, shit, someone get me a patent form... before Dynafit makes SPD all carbon fat bike AT boots, for $2500... each.
  • 2 0
hmmm...crampon compatible?...sold! now be a dick about it!

Did they kick out all the freaks after the branding issue at the last Fat Bike race? Probably illegal to branch kids anyway.
PS How did the fat bike fall over? I thought they had sooo much grip everywhere.

Serious question: can fat bikes race in hardtail class of other races?
  • 8 1
why would anyone do that???? you can ride one yes but will you win no
  • 8 0
 ainters gonsta aint
  • 4 3
I think a fat bike would beat most hardtails in a downhill race. But I don't think it's fair
  • 13 5
Only in a fat bike race where the leader falls ten feet away from the finish line.

 Ratboy-Huck to Flat-Breaks Ankle-Loses World Champs.
  • 6 1
Ummm. Not the best comparison. Ratty was full throttle for the win with a jump built so chicks could hit the tranny. This guy slipped in the snow.

Both mental hiccups in the closing seconds of a race. Alex Grant was applying pressure and right on his wheel...which made Robbie apply too much gas in a sweeper to beat him to the line, not as simple as it sounds. He could have let off, but risked Alex passing him. Bryceland was also trying to not lose the race in the closing seconds... Both are normally easy tasks that are challenging at race pace.

That Cannondale lefty looks even stranger on a fat bike!
  • 7 6
I still don't get it. I'm embarrassed a lil bit for cycling. Nationals? Pfft. There are no obsticals! Wind is the technical difficulty? Who are these people? How did this happen? Pro class? There's more tech difficulty riding any bike from my house to 7/11.
  • 6 1
 Cool!
  • 6 6
They should replace "this berm" with "the berm." Seems to be the only damn feature on the course! Put some berms and table tops in! Just because the bikes are unusual doesn't mean the race has to be boring. That said, I'm glad people are putting the effort in for this kind of thing. I think it has a real future

  • 2 1
Ya ok. Just you know... Everyone knows. It's no secret. Eh? You don't have to live in Portland to have an idea bozo. Like...you could go there for example. Zero individuality on a whole. Everyone looks the same. Nerds in beards and uniforms. Eh?
