Kyle Norbraten and The Coastal Crew Part Ways

Oct 4, 2015 at 10:44
by Coastal Crew
The Coastal Crew has always been fueled by like-minded individuals, motivated by the same goals and in search of the next cool thing to share with the world of MTB. After years of creating trails, web videos, feature films and now the Coast Gravity Park, our relationships have gone through a lot of changes.

Enjoy some unseen footage of Kyle riding from earlier this season:

We are disappointed to announce that Kyle Norbraten has made the choice to no longer be a part of The Coastal Crew or Coast Gravity Park. Kyle’s direction has shifted from that of the CC & CGP ultimately leading to a situation that doesn’t allow us to work together moving forward. We wish Norbz all the best in all of his future endeavours.

The Coastal Crew will continue to work closely with long-time sponsors Specialized, SRAM, Smith Optics & Chromag. Throughout the winter and beyond we will be creating captivating content and develop some of the world's best trails at Coast Gravity Park. To stay in touch with The Coastal Crew & Coast Gravity Park follow them through social.

MENTIONS: @the-coastal-crew / @stubs / @crobinson / @Specialized / @SramMedia / @SmithOptics / @Chromagbikes

This is like your parents divorced just way worse

Dude, you are so right. It is like your parents divorce, plus your dog died, plus, plus your bike got stolen, plus you got fired. This really sucks. And I thought it is going to be a good day today.

After reading all these comments all I can say is...if you guys F'ed with Norbs you're done.

Song: "Everybody wants to rule the world"

Video: Super slow-mo.

Seriously, you guys must be really angry at each other, if you have to make him look that slow to a song like this.

Bad style.

Joking...Just have to feel for Kyle though, as is echoed throughout this thread. Hope all involved are ok.

I heard he's fed-up with 27.5 and wants to go back to his roots. Just putting it out there !
  • 16 1
He left because secretly curtis and dylan are rollerbladers
  • 2 0
  • 130 3
 but why ?
  • 163 4
 Because he has oakley goggles
  • 70 2
Maybe they dont like the name Kyle
  • 143 5
because he stole one of dylan dunkertons cheeseburgers

still remember this being the first mtb video I've ever watched and really made me want to get into it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zLuqKNKOqs sad they're parting ways.
  • 206 1
I can only assume the reason he left is because CGP is about to let roller bladers in
  • 18 2
@bull-dozer I agree with your comment below, his current situation with CC likely limits his sponsorship ability, his current contract probably is based as a percentage of a team instead of solo. He probably is just looking out for his self interest, and likely will sign with a new sponsor soon.
  • 109 6
found out it was the coastal crew that robbed him
  • 21 2
Time to change the name of your crew. Don't try to go all Van Halen or Black Sabbath on us.
  • 45 0
I heard he got a job with better Carrefour prospects. At Costco you can make junior manager in 18 months if you work hard
  • 14 1
Kubaner - they were the Coastal Crew before he got there and they are still the Coastal Crew.
  • 19 0
pretty obvious if you watch the video. Norbs clearly wants to rule the world
  • 3 0
The robbing could have been linked to them? That was a bitter pill to swallow
  • 3 0
 @AllMountin, and @alexshirley...effin hilarious.
  • 18 0
He's gone to party on the trails...
  • 5 5
Maybe Specialized will no longer support the CC, but wanna still sponsor Kyle?
No drama please : o
  • 1 0
Ok i should read more carefully : o, so it makes more sense that Kyle gets a new sponsor.
  • 41 3
or maybe he wanted to keep riding his full dh bike instead of enduro bikes with dual crown forks

Repost of my post below since I replied to the wrong comment:

What is the "Coastal Crew" anyway? Is it not just an informal group of riders that grew up in the same place (sunshine coast) that make bike videos together, etc? Doesn't make sense that they would need to formally "break up". As someone commented above, it must be that Kyle is signing with a new big bike brand that has some sort of clause in their contract that doesn't allow him to associate with other groups.

Judging by the song selection, fair to say he left to go rule the world.
  • 6 0
 He has gone 29er.
  • 14 1
 he's joining team robot!
  • 1 0
@AllMountin either that or he's doing Pure Heroin...
  • 55 2
he is probably about to sign with some other bike brand for a lot more money than he is getting currently, truth is everyone's gotta eat and as you get older that becomes more and more important

It's sad when a group start separating, but sometimes is the best for both parts. All the best wishes to everyone of you. (the video was great btw)
  • 29 0
And it's not even April fool's day
  • 24 1
Two people hardly qualifies as a crew anymore. I propose a reality web series called "Going Coastal" in which riders compete to win a spot in the crew based on trail building, riding, appropriate use of flannel, ability to lace the word "zone" into all conversations and general bro'ness. In all seriousness I wish both parties well and have enjoyed watching them ride over the years and appreciate their large contributions to the sport through media, advocacy and trail building. Thanks and good luck.
  • 18 0
 Finally! My time has come!
  • 24 1
What they think the reaction is going to be if they don't even give a reason! I'm not saying there is even a good reason for Norbz to leave but I'm sure everyone would appreciate a better explanation.
  • 8 1
Also @the-coastal-crew dont forget to update your bio.
  • 19 11
And I'm sure Dylan, Curtis and Kyle would appreciate the privacy. They dog need to list out the reasons if they don't want to.
  • 8 2
I'm sure if they had a falling out or something they would have not written this whole thing about it and made him a video. It just seems this article is creating a lot of confusion.
  • 103 3
@kazyamamura I know whenever I need privacy I post a front page pinkbike article too.
  • 11 13
Two different issues @north-shore-bike-shop Letting their fans know the Crew is changing is one thing, but sharing the sordid details is another thing completely. Maybe check Perez Hilton to get more dirt?
  • 12 4
Fair point for sure but there's way more departures without press releases. It's strange and seems unnecessary. And invites questions from people who, frankly, have no business knowing the answers to those questions. All I know is anyone who hasn't been to CGP is missing out. Seriously best bike park on the planet!
  • 25 0
That crew is way too popular not to publish such separation. But contradictory wording like "[he] has made the choice " and "ultimately leading to a situation that doesn’t allow us" sound like a major dissonance. I accept they don't want to go into more detail. It's not privacy, but still internal business.
  • 20 3
I agree it is a bit of an inflammatory post from the Costal Crew which creates more questions than it needed to....
  • 26 0
I agree, if they didn't want to give the full scoop they could have just said "Norbs has left to seek out other opportunities and we wish him luck" end release. This sounds bitter, so of course people have questions.
  • 25 0
From Coastal Crew to Coastal Two Pretty bummed about this.
  • 21 0
i just had a mini heart attack
  • 19 0
Good luck Norbs! Always been a huge fan

He was kicked for not roosting enough when he was told they need "more roost"
  • 18 1
He needs to focus on The Sickest Edit Ever. It's understandable.
  • 19 3
The axle path on the new demo is not compatible with Kyle's riding style. It's unstable at best, dangerous at worst.
  • 14 4
The write up on NSMB.com had a few more words in the write up....

"We are disappointed to announce Kyle Norbraten made a choice to no longer be a part of The Coastal Crew or Coast Gravity Park. Kyle’s direction has shifted from that of the CC & CGP ultimately leading to a situation that doesn’t allow us to work together in a healthy manner. We wish Norbz all the best in all his future endeavours."

We've got 50 posts speculating that this is a sponsorship issue, but take a good look at THIS NSMB release, and ask yourself what prevents "healthy" collaboration? Combine that with the observation that Norbs has gone AWOL on the shooting front over the last year?
DRUGS, people.
This has all the hallmarks of someone going on a bender.
  • 4 1
 You really think so? Drugs?
  • 3 4
Well, I have friend living on the Sunshine Coast of BC and I know from him and all his issues with his two teenager kids that there are plenty of drug related problems over there. But, it seems so unlikely to me that a member of a VERY succesful and mature mtb business partnership is departing due to drugs. The "healthy" word might me just a matter of writting style. Just saying...
  • 5 20
flag powturn FL (Oct 5, 2015 at 11:16) (Below Threshold)
There are only *two* substantative statements in that press release:
1) KN chose to leave, and 2) working with him had become "unhealthy."
I don't wish these sort of problems on anyone, but there are only two possible explanations for why a working situation with another person becomes "unhealthy":
substance abuse or mental health problems.

Either way I hope he recovers soon.
  • 24 1
this is how rumors get started...
  • 9 7
Dozen other people have said it here: Coastal drops an exceedingly vague press release. THAT is the cause of speculation, not the other way around.
  • 2 1
Come on, "Moving on" does not sound like personal problems.
  • 7 0
Yea "unhealthy" definitely indicates some sort of drama but let's not start rumors. It could just be "unhealthy" to work with someone you are not getting along with ... it does not have to be literal.
  • 2 0
I don't think we should jump to conclusions either, but I also think this article could have been written in a less ambiguous way which would mitigate controversy rather than igniting it
  • 13 2
 Drugs? Uh-oh.

Can you please stop making these kinds of assumptions in public, about a person you don't even know in real life?
  • 4 23
flag powturn FL (Oct 5, 2015 at 12:57) (Below Threshold)
Come up with a better reading of "doesn’t allow us to work together in a healthy manner" from this PRESS RELEASE in a public forum, and you can EARN the right to shut everyone else up by virtue of your ideas.
No better ideas? Your opinion loses.
  • 5 1
Healthy manner could be in reference to healthy business practices. Ie; new sponsor not jiving with team sponsor or even being a direct competitor to one of the team sponsors. Could be drugs, could be political ideology, could be whooping cough. Who knows? What is for sure is that if drugs helped make that awesome edit with the blades, keep on keepin on!
  • 13 1
 Hahahaha drugs!! Jesus you guys.
  • 2 1

well this is a major bummer. i grew up watching these guys progress as a team. its not gonna be costal crew anymore with only tow guys, its just not gonna feel right
  • 25 0
To be fair the Coastal Crew also included Kyle Jameson in the beginning but no one seems to remember. People thought it wouldn't be the same with only 3 but time went on and KJ is still killing it!
  • 3 0
The thing that won't sit right with me is that it is happening again. I remember kj being in the crew for sure but now that it is down to only two guys it makes me worry about what will happen
  • 9 2
#norbsgotpaid - just my guess of why he's leaving. Another opportunity with a bike company not named Specialized.

I'm bummed to read this, but people grow up and grow in different directions. Good luck to everyone on both sides. Keep riding, keep having fun.
  • 1 0
I agree, I bet it is a sponsorship change for Norbs.
  • 12 3
Not sure why this requires a press release, unless they want to rub something in
  • 10 0
I bet we see his new kit at Rampage. #norobbersthistime

I'm thinking he wants to pursue competitions and his free ride career, and they are pretty damn busy running and creating the worlds sweetest park. no biggie. all awesome guys. living the dream!
  • 4 0
I hope the power of friendship will overcome whatever sponsorship related cause if this split (if any,as per speculation). Sometimes once in a lifetime opportunities come up so you can't really blame him. But damn. This is sad yo. Keep it tight CC and Norbs. You guys did magically inspirational stuff together.
  • 4 1
The Coastal Crew is the Main Part why I started Gravity mtnbiking. I always watched their Videos as a Child and always wanted to live that bc live Style. That's really hard to believe, I hope they'll make an explaination Video!
  • 6 1
And so the Coastal Crew became two This kinda makes me wana boo-hoo but I look forward to something that's new Lets see if The Intern will come through!
  • 2 0
Norbs will be fine or not, the industry is fickle. He will most likely be just fine with new sponsors. Maybe he'll be the sponsored guy who never does anything but just ride lots and stoke people out (which is rad), like Hunter.

What blows is I'm out of the video loop because I'm too busy riding bikes.
  • 6 0
These guys were my childhood heros, super disappointed to see this
  • 2 0
"The Coastal Crew will continue to work closely with long-time sponsors Specialized, SRAM, Smith Optics & Chromag."
To me that suggests hes going a different way prob new sponsor.
and could be that coastal crew is more of a brand that group of mates ect,
you think coastal crew you think coastal bike park, hitting big jumps, riding demos everything SRAM.
so if its more like a brand it wouldnt look good for them having one of the top dogs of a team / bike park sponsored by Specialized /SRAM rolling around bossing the jumps on say a trek/yt never know could do a sam hill and f*ck off to nukeproof and chain reaction lol
  • 3 0
So sad, these guys make the best videos and CGP is an amazing place. I hope all is well between them and they at least remain friends.

This was exactly my point as we discussed this in the car today. Very strange that it's set up as this big press release thing.
  • 5 0
It might be strange if they didn't have sponsors and commitments and fans. Imagine if they just kept on making videos and working on CGP as the Coastal Two without telling anyone? That would be strange. Considering the responsibilities they have with their sponsors it makes perfect sense to let the world know. Has nothing to do with Norbz sponsor situation at all though - which complicates it further. If Norbz was leaving all the sponsors they share it would be cleaner - but that's not the situation.
  • 11 1
wow...you had a lot of people in that car!
