Trailer: "The Moment" Documentary Pays Homage to the Origins of Freeride

by The Moment Movie

It's hard to imagine what mountain biking would be without the influence of freeriding on the sport. Our favourite web edits, our local mountain bike parks, our baggy shorts and pretty much everything else we consider as part of "normal" mountain bike culture has been influenced by freeriding in one way or another. Yet, it's not often we think about how it all came to be.

Until now.

Skateboarding has "Dogtown & Z-Boys". Surfing has "Riding Giants". Freestyle Motocross has "Unchained". And now, 20 years in the making, freeride mountain biking is set to have a film about its origin story and what that meant to mountain biking.

"The Moment" is a feature length documentary about the birth of freeride mountain biking that features the mountain bikers and filmmakers who rose up, challenged the status quo, and turned the sport of cycling on its head. Directed by former pro mountain biker-turned-filmmaker Darcy Hennessey Turenne, this film is a comprehensive look at how the sport began, told by the characters who lived it first hand.

Featuring

Wade Simmons
Richie Schley
Brett Tippie
Chris Lawrence
Dave Swetland
Dan Cowan
Todd "Digger" Fiander
Christian Begin
Bjorn Enga
Mitchell Scott
Elladee Brown
Leslie Anthony

Eric Berger
John Gibson
Sterling Lorence
Greg Stump
Bryson Marton
Thomas Vanderham
Anthony Smith
Craig Olsson
Graham Agassiz
Dik Cox
Dave Reddick
& More...

With over a year and a half of full-time work being put into the making of the film, it is almost complete. However, the production is still looking for support to complete the film and be able to share the history of the sport with the mountain bike community, and the world beyond. A Kickstarter page has been set up with prizes ranging from movie t-shirts, to digital downloads of the film, to heli biking trips, to bike frames, to rides with Wade Simmons. We can't wait to share this film with you!

This is such an awesome project! It's like ''MTB History 101'' (which should absolutely be taught in schools everywhere). Can't wait.

someone really needs to make action figures to commemorate these wonderful, churlish miscreants... I especially want to see Lunchbox Larry with action cam headgear!

I jumped on the kickstarter. I lived in BC in 1999-2000. On our first trip to Fromme we met a crazy Aussie named Pete on the ferry who took us up to ride some amazing trails. He was wearing sandals and still hitting everything. I went from XC geek to freerider that day. I'm very excited for this movie.

I remember getting my brand new rock hard Marin and going shredding at Fromme thinking I was legit.... Then I see some guys flying through the air 15 feet above my head off some small board and landing in some steep crazy rock garden and I remember saying to myself, "This is the greatest sport ever.... I will never do that f'ing sh!T.... but its the greatest sport ever!!!!"

Ok, smokin pot like crazy before takin a suicide ride sounds legit! No need to say it twice, I'm doing it Big Grin

i understand that this is about the pioneers and the legends, but i was expecting a litle bit more support from the current industry people.

Probably just returning a profit after all those bike frame recalls these guys caused

$45 for the movie and a t-shirt to support a movie about the weirdos of our degenerate past? how could I not?
  • 6 0
Money sent. A great project that memorializes a group of fringe riders that pushed our sport in a new direction. They showed us there was more than just cross country and downhill.
  • 5 0
Hell yeah!!! This looks awesome! As a 20-something who only started mountain biking a few years ago, I couldn't be more excited to hear the stories and see the lines I've heard so much about. Its difficult to find a quality version of any of the old Kranked movies, can't wait for this!

My only issue is that I wanted to pre-order the movie with a poster and stickers, but that option doesn't exist in the rewards and Kickstarter won't let me donate twice and select two rewards. Just a thought you might want to look at packaging the movie with some of the other rewards as I think a lot of people want the movie+ .. but just my 2 cents, supporting wholeheartedly either way!
  • 7 0
Thanks @laxguy -- I will make that reward an option now...once I do you can change your pledge to the new option. It explains how here: www.kickstarter.com/help/search?utf8=âś“&term=Can+I+change+my+pledge%3F

Thanks for the feedback!

For those of us who rode during this wondrous period of mountain biking - I lost much skin and blood attempting to emulate what these folks were doing - this will be a treat to watch. Thanks for having the motivation, vision and tenacity to make this movie.
  • 3 0
Yeah! Absolutely doing our sport justice. What an amazing project that is shaping up to be an iconic piece of of history for our sport. I was 15 years old when I started racing downhill bikes, in 1995, and I remember in between riding, I'd devour my magazines about my heroes, dreaming of the day that I could join them out in British Columbia. Haha! I can't wait to see this.
  • 5 0
really excited about this! I really hope it's a 2 hour epic - we need more documentaries (the sports old enough now) The Steve Peat one is amazing.
  • 3 0
I feel old now and I'm a kid compared to these guys. So crazy to see, because when I got into mountain biking it was because of their films. To this day I don't have as much as fun on a ride if I wasn't scared sh!#less at least once and it's all their fault.
  • 4 0
Awesome! These are the people and videos that made me get to Canada and re-learn how to ride my bike back in the year 2000- Going to be great viewing, aye...
  • 3 0
Bought my first Rocky Mountain Cardiac in 1996 because of those guys and seeing what they were doing in magazines and film. Brings back so many memories. I will cry with joy when I watch this.

I think the freeride movement, by pushing the limits of the bike, helped massively in the development of the modern mountain bike. And that is awesome. Thank you guys.

Not to be an A-hole or anything but why is Aggy in a documentary about the birth of freeride?
  • 8 0
I think it's for him to talk about the influence they have had on him, as he is from Kamloops where a lot Kranked scenes were shot, and where the froriders grew up.
  • 2 1
I fully understand that Bender is from 2000s, but... nevertheless...
  • 2 0
 Gotta see this !
  • 2 2
Wonder how it all came to be? Some of us PBers lived through this era Wink
  • 7 2
Yes but this film is needed for the other 95% of PB members who only started riding in the past 8 years.
  • 2 1
@scott-townes: There's an entire Kranked anthology for those ones. Get educated. Among others, The Search for the Holy Trail. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOojjkb9ADQ
  • 2 0
@fictiti0us: Oh look, a kid who joined PB 6 years ago telling me to get educated on the history of freeride. Boy, I still have NWD 1-6, Kranked Trails from the Crypt (came out a few years before Holy Trail but that may be their best one which my dad has stashed away) and the 2nd and 3rd Rampage flicks. I grew up watching the history of freeriding and the anthology is awesome for sure but this move is something much different.
  • 1 1
@scott-townes: I've been riding bikes since I could walk buddy. PB member or not I've been on two wheels for over 20 years. My comment wasn't intended for you, anyways - read a little closer. I grew up with the NWD and Kranked movies, and Big Rocks Hard Knocks, too! I'm just as stoked on this movie as you are
  • 2 1
@fictiti0us: "I've been biking since I was 5 years old", yep and so has most of the human population. If you were really into freeriding, DH, etc. for such a long time, you would have joined the biggest website for freeriding and DH much longer than only 6 years ago.

"My comment wasn't intended for you but I referenced you followed by the phrase 'Get educated'".

Keep digging that hole, bud.
  • 2 1
@scott-townes: Hahaha I raced my first DH at Panorama in 2004. I jumped my bike off everything I could even before that. I've been to Moab almost every year for the last 13. Keep talking, big guy. We're all impressed by your "holier than thou" attitude. www.pinkbike.com/photo/15174162
  • 2 0
@fictiti0us: There's nothing more funny than someone so insecure they post their "riding resume" in order to somehow justify their initial stupid comment.
  • 2 1
@scott-townes: Says the guy who listed his movie collection to do the same..
  • 2 0
Both of you look like jackasses...

@scott-townes: You Still riding Grandpa?? Are you supposed to be somewhere else?

 @scott-townes:
You've been trolling on pink bike for years. I'm surprised anyone listens / reacts to your childishness.
Maybe this is the year you could try and be less of a dick.

You appear to be missing Josh Bender in this production.
  • 7 0
This documents the very beginnings in the '90's. Bender didn't appear on film until late 2000, and wasn't in the Kranked series.
  • 1 0
@mulchee: I posted a comment earlier about Aggy being in the film. Any reason for that as he was born in the '90s?
  • 6 0
@srsiri23w: because Aggy is a later generation freerider from Kamloops, where Brett, Richie and Wade are from, and where much of the early footage was shot. He has stated in interviews that the guys were big influences on him.
  • 2 0
Dave Watson should be in on this too
