Day 3 of our adventure did not disappoint the Pinkbike crew. Our mission today was to whet our whistles and sample a bit of everything Windells and the
North West School of Freeride had to offer. Despite the pouring rain/hailing balls of ice and even a small sprinkle of snow, we did some major shredding both indoors and outdoors.Tyler and I opted out of morning breakfast and decided to sleep the extra hour while the rest of the team got breakie at the Windell camp cafeteria (thanks team for not bothering to wake us up). 8:30 and just rolling out of bed, I hastily pulled on my riding attire and ran to catch up with the team for they were already following Sam to the indoor park/foam pit to start their morning sesh. We arrived at the park and where astonished to see that it was empty minus one of the Windell’s builders constructing a new ledge to get your grind on. Having the park to ourselves we all spread out and start doing our own things. Kyle and Casey played P.I.G on the wood hip, Jordan was playing on the mini ramps, and I played in the foam pit trying to perfect my newly learned back flip.
Windell’s really is “the funnest place on earth” besides riding the park, we all dabbed into the mini games inside the park facility. Kyle and Chris dawned old school hockey helmets and foam dowels, and battled on the mini beam beside the foam pit…it is safe to say that Kyle is good at this game because I don’t think he lost once the whole day. Me and Jordan strapped on the snowboard and jumped on the trampoline and Casey rode a skateboard with bindings into the foam pit.
After enjoying a bountiful lunch consisting of sandwiches and animal crackers, the rain started to recede just enough to enjoy the outdoors. Casey wanting to hit the Boyko drop in the yard, found some shovels and he and Kyle started to prep the landing to make it suitable to hit on a bike. Jordan and I brought out the cameras and set up to film Casey. After hitting the drop 3 times the rain started to fall again and we all came to the conclusion that rain makes you wet and it would be wise to head back inside to get dry and finish off the day with a couple more hours of private foam pit jumps and skate park sessions.
8 hours of continuous riding can wear any rider down, Tyler finally called us all back to Sam’s pad and made us pack our gear and load the trucks to make the trek to Bend, Oregon. Saying our goodbyes to Jaymo and Sam we left Windells and the NorthWest School of Freeride and made a quick stop at Valu foods to stock up on munchies and drinks. It is amazing to see the change in landscape as you drive, in a matter of 45 mins we went from snowy mountain pass, high mountain glaciers, too flat, arid, semi desert Kamloops looking-ish moonscape. Jaymo hooked us up with this rad looking condominium called Mt. Batchelor Inn…looks wild. Tonight we’re hanging out in Bend and tomorrow hopefully we’ll do some riding and then continue on our drive to California.
The Pinkbike crew would like to give a huge thanks to everyone at Windells including Sam and Jaymo for letting us not only crash and store our gear in his house, but also sesh the park and sample everything the
North West School of Freeride has to offer.
