Mountain of Hell 2017: Mass Start Craziness With Fabien Cousinié - Video

by UR Team

The Mountain of Hell is the biggest DH mass start of the world with 700 riders in one single wave! Starting from 3600 meters on the glacier of Les Deux Alpes and finishing down the valley 30 minutes later. Mass start season has started and again the Mountain of Hell didn't disappoint with some crazy conditions!

MOH

This year the conditions on the glacier were really extreme with a thick mist, and freezing snow, which made the riders take a lot of risks!

"It's one of the scariest things I've ever ridden, riding so fast down the glacier without seeing anything while being chased by 700 riders is so wild, it didn't feel real until I crashed but I'm super stoked to come back 4th after that. The rest of the race, as usual, is awesome with some proper freeride lines, high-speed trails, steep singletracks and of course riding through a bar! Definitely, a must do race for anyone who loves mass start." - Fabien cousinié

MOH

Remy Absalon won the race and shows us that he is the king of Mass Start while Cous Cous finished 4th after his wild ride.

That Polygon frame doesn't look too silly with a rider on top. Apparently it works well too.

It was my hardest race as well, full body armor required, exploded my DH Helmet to finally finish the race with no harm. It was worth it. Then got back to work yesterday and destroyed my thumb against a table using a VR Headset. Life is unfair.

 damn.

This was the most brutal race I've ever done, crashed 3 times badly, glad I had full body armour. Can't move today from whiplash. Makes megavalanche look like a family trail ride.

The steepness and sheer speed of the tracks makes even the normal bike park tracks brutal on an enduro bike... especially venosc. When I was there I felt those tracks were so smooth that I decided to do a day on my enduro once - it was barely enjoyable lol. It was rough as f*ck, breaking bumps were hell and I felt my bar was wayy too narrow with 760 compared to the DH with 785mm. Don't want to imagine how it feels like pushing this in a race from top to bottom ;D
To everyone who says you only need one bike for all, I suggest doing some insanely steep alpine tracks on your enduro while reflecting on it.

Not even a "sorry, are you alright?" after that HUUUUGE crash into the other guy at fullspeed in the beginning? That's disgusting.

Exactly what I was thinking. This is what I am afraid of when I join the Megavalanche this week - people that wanna win no matter what and doesn't care for collateral damage at all... Hopefully all goes well.

the other guy jumped to his feet eager to get back on the bike as quickly as possible. I can't see any wrongdoing in this case. However, you can only guess if Fabienne would have taken some seconds and checked the guy if it weren't that obvious that the other one is quite fine.

It was -4degC, everyone had been waiting for 2-3 hours on top of a glacier from 6am. Full race mode, tunnel vision... It was time to get down, everyman for himself. The blizzard and cloud were pretty grim and the guy he crashed into just appears from nowhere at probably 80 kmh. They all know the risks, he didn't need a cuddle.

he overtook a lot of riders at the lift in the morning, not even saying "sorry"..just because he was late...
no matter what he does on his bike, this is not the type of guy with a good behaviour...

a lil' bit like jamie nicoll (hum hum, polygon UR rider too) that crashes on an other rider il megavalanche last year and did not event checked if the rider was ok...

They ride through a damn pub!!!!

They do everything so much better in France. Never see a glacier start somewhere like Whistler, or better yet Blackcomb
  • 5 1
... you do realize Blackcomb is in Whistler?

that was super fun in my cubicle.

Loved his polite version of "get out the way you frickin prick!"
That was insane.

Can Sam Hill keep Remy Absalon behind on the uphills of the Megavalanche?
  • 2 0
Not a fekking chance. Remy is an animal, he's the master at this. He'd have had a better chance here actually, steeper course and the uphills are hike a bike rather than sustained climbs.
