by Omar Salas

2336 Vertical Drop
3663 MSL
14.5 KM Long
20 Min 48 Sec Track Record
81 KM/H Speed Record

For the 3rd time, the Intense Super Downhill took place in Santiago, Chile, descending the well known "Parvazo" track that was originally made by cowboys and rediscovered in the 90's by some old school riders.

This year, the race's starting elevation was 3665 meters, 100 meters high than last year, and included many modifications to make a real downhill experience with almost no climbing. Riders from Italy, Argentina, Peru, Brazil and Chile came to compete against the clock in this monster track, including Markolf Berchtold (BRA), the best Latin-American rider of all times.

This year, Felipe Vial (GT Racing Team) won his very first title with a time of 21:09.626 and a speed of 77.837 KM/H

Raced this last year while I was visiting Chile and it is freaking awesome! Worst arm pump I've ever experienced but such a rowdy trail. Stoked it is getting the recognition it deserves. Parvazzzooooo!!
  • + 3
That is the kipp I thought it was! Hey man I miss ya and the butte too!

Raced Parvazo a couple months back while on Andes-Pacifico... PAINFUL. BTW, hello bulldog!

 parvazooo!!!

Phychosis in Golden was another DH racethat was close in length. Good to see a epic length DH race !!
  • + 7
the psychosis was substantially more savage than this one appeared! but who knows that could just be the go pro effect coming into play, where as I have been on dead dog and know how steep it is haha. none the less looks like a fun course and a rad race!
  • + 9
@acdownhill: Parvazzo is rough, but its nothing compared to Mt 7.

Big fan of the Psychosis, and this one looks like my kind of thing. I'll be watching to see if it's on for 2018.
Fraser, have you ridden Parvazzo? Gopro rarely does anything justice, but maybe you have first hand insight?
  • + 3
@kram: probably Valparaiso Urban DH in the third week of february and next week Super DH 2018...would be a nice combo
  • + 3
@fraserbritton: many things we changed since your last came my little friend Wink

nice.. looks like an arm breaker... There is another epic race similar in Ecuador... Mamarumi race... 2 days, 15km+12km DH, 2500m descents... I guess not that publicized.. this year will be the 8th edition.. www.facebook.com/DownhillMamaRumi/videos/1132264543521719

Mt Seven descends just over 4000 vertical feet and I believe the fastest time is just under 12 minutes long. I always wanted to compete in that race. If you have ever watched the movie "Seasons" there is a section about that race at Mt Seven. Gives you a taste of the gnar. Listen to what the riders say about how steep and fast it is.
  • + 2
@WasatchEnduro: I remember steve on this event! the RB video still available is mindblowing!
  • + 2
Mt. 7 is just too steep for park services to ever let it reopen, it's an erosion nightmare from what I've been told. Damn shame!
  • + 1
 double post
  • + 3
@mooseman414: It's just under 4000 at 3985ft. The record time is Kovarik at 12:35.14

@DirtbagMatt: While Dead Dog (the very top section) is rather rutted, it's still rideable. And it's not in a park, so no issues with that. There are multiple trails on Mt 7 and they are actually building a climbing trail there as well. The Psychosis track is very much alive and well. The only thing missing is the road gap structure, which was only ever allowed to be there for race weekend and taken down right after.
  • + 1
@kram: Thanks for the info, I had no idea and was obviously way off the mark!
  • + 1
@DirtbagMatt: All good. You should really go ride it (either again, or for the first time). Still my favorite trail in the world. Nowhere can you go that fast for such long sections of rough technical singletrack, riddled with root doubles and snappy corners, and mixed with some of the steepest terrain you'll see anywhere. 'All of your suspension all of the time' is a line I like to use to describe it, even though it's not entirely accurate; but it conveys the right idea. If anyone knows of a better trail to ride a DH bike on, let me know so I can go ride that one too Smile

Imagine walking that track, holy smokes you would need to pack a lunch!!
  • + 2
track walk is transforming to a camping trip
  • + 1
 @leopaul: no kidding!!
  • + 10
That is one sketchy looking road gap towards the end of the end first video.
  • + 2
Hell yeah!! Why did they build the thing pointing downward so much?
  • + 1
 @Aprilfisheye: to avoid accidents
  • + 1
@waazaa: not convinced on this one mate, you roll into that thing just a little bit too slow and you can be sure that your front wheel goes eating the landing.

I like flat take-off better for gaps. But maybe that's just me Wink
  • + 5
@Aprilfisheye: maybe my friend, but nobody had an accident and that is good for the event. its 14.5 Km long and sometimes the access its no easy.
  • + 9
This track is a bit longer than the Fontana DH
  • + 7
Redbull needs to cash out and sponsor WC here, it would be epic
  • + 1
Would be easier to set up cameras with all that open space; be interesting trying to set up a live broadcast though...
  • + 4
Watched the whole this without stopping...now I need a beer or two. feeling exhausted.
  • + 4
If I am ever in Chile and have an hour to spare I would like to ride that trail.
  • + 1
whwoa theyre like 3 miles from my house. next time im at little machine brewing for happy hour, i need to walk over and check out their shop. always thought they were in Golden. Ive seen their truck/van at Apex several times

Sorry to inform but the longest and highest DH event took place in the Nevado de Toluca Estado de México, Mexico in the 90s and begining of the 2000s
Starting at 4000m osl and with 18km of trail
the elite class used to arrive to the finish line spiting blood, the Panamerican Championship took place there in 98 with uci and copaci marshals to credit the event.
It used to take 2 hs to get the riders to the top and due to heavy rain in the 2002-2003 the roads disapeared making it very hard to get to the top and the long way that is still there takes too long

In Arica, north of Chile, there is a trail starting from 3700m to 1500m in 29kms only downhilling... Then came a little climb (200m long) and then pedaling other 35kms to the beach... The Bad thing? It's part of a 200kms-in-2-days XC race starting from 3500, then climb to 4400m above sea level and maybe 80kms forward to start downhill...
In 2016 was the first race, this year maaaaaaybe I'll go with some "enduro-trail" bike to enjoying more that part of the trail.

@Fenrisvarg: me gustó es eh... , es muy dificil de realizar?
  • + 1

Saludos Chile

 Except for Megavalanche?
  • + 1
Looks like an amazing trail and race though!
  • + 2
Huh, Downieville DH is 15 miles and 5,000+ feet descent. Just sayin. DV isn't gnar, though.
  • + 8
@Mattin: of course, but we are talking about DHI, without Ascent...this is 100% vertical
  • + 9
 @endlessblockades: 2336meters, that's 7672 feet. Pretty impressive.
  • + 6
 Mega isn't a DH race
  • + 1
@endlessblockades: some good uphill in there too.
  • + 1
@mrgonzo: only 1 500' climb, but yeah, that part actually sucks.
  • + 1
@endlessblockades: unless you somehow hit the wrong trail from the top and end up doing the 5 mile downieville uphill instead. It's the new rage
  • + 3
 Should be called DownDuro. Amazing!
  • + 3
It would be great to see all the top riders join this race.
  • + 3
Damn that was long. props to the riders.
  • + 3
Oh my lord this thing looks awesome
  • + 2
I'd like to see Richie Rude ride this thing. Maybe the ground will shake again...
  • + 2
 @waazaa: amazing work bro!!!
