Team BGB-MK’s Favorite Bike Park – Snowshoe Race #2

by Jay Schultz
After a successful Round 1 at Snowshoe in June, Team BGB-Mountain Khakis would return to our “favorite place to ride” in the West Virginia Mountains. The objective this weekend, securing some valuable points in Race 2 of 3 in the Snowshoe series. With two podiums in Race 1 we were up for the challenge of doing it all over again. It’s Snowshoe…… simply, we love it here and if you ain’t having fun, you aint racing! Having fun= Good results!

Considering that Race 1 was not a “typical” Snowshoe race with nothing but the sun’s rays and blue sky, could we expect to be as lucky? NOT! Friday was a day of ever changing conditions with a mix of fog (or clouds at that altitude), sun, and rain, in no particular order. The Snowshoe trail crew was forced to keep the course closed all day. No practice just meant some rest and relaxation before the gates dropped and shreddin started.

Saturday morning, the chatter in the condo and at pseudo “pit area” across from the Western Lift was “Spikes or No Spikes”; it was a tough decision. In the woods where the slop was you’d need spikes to prevent the tires from packing up, but in the open slope and on the hard packed rocky sections, you’d be riding on ice with those spikes. It was just a day of practice, so most just ran the risk of packing up and hoped that the weather cooperated not bringing any additional moisture.

Saturday evening did bring about 2 hours worth of light rain. Early Sunday morning conditions had improved in the open slope, but buried in the sticks covered by layer after layer of leaf after leaf, it wouldn’t be enough time for the track to dry out. The slippery mess would remain. Team BGB-Mountain Khakis (and friends) rallied behind lady rider Heither Schultz for some motivation to give it a go on a slippery course……. Heither “Manned Up” and was able to secure the third spot in Intro ladies. Jay Guidry was next to take the gate and was chomping at the bit to stand on the podium for a second straight Snowshoe race. The Weekend Warrior (Cat 2) rider delivered, rounding off the podium in third and securing some valuable class point moving into the series finale in two months. Ryan Taylor would run the closing leg in Pro and pulled a repeat performance in the top ten taking 9th position.

Next up is Race 2 at Beech Mountain Resort in North Carolina, followed shortly after by two more races at Snowshoe in September. We’ve got a bit of a break and considering in two weeks we’ve traveled 1100 miles for two races, we all deserve it. We’ll see you at Beech!

Team BGB-MK Results:
Men’s Elite (Pro):
9th – Ryan Taylor

Men’s WW II 18-29 (Cat 2):
3rd – Jay Guidry

Women’s Intro (Cat 3):
