Here at Kovarik Racing, our MTB coaching has had great success over the years through our private courses and our junior development programs.

This summer Claire and I sat down and worked on organizing a new program. One that would reach out to the younger generation of shredders here in Whistler and to teach them how to get that extra edge on the race track and having fun in the bike park. Now the season has come to an end, we thought we'd showcase some of what our little shredders have been working on throughout the summer Kovarik Racing program.

The kids here in Whistler are very talented and they’re fortunate enough to grow up riding the bike park. Their skills are beyond their years, it’s easy to see! I myself am pretty stoked to be able to work with this next generation of mountain bikers and see them progress.

Our program works in and around the summer Phat Kidz race series here in Whistler. My goals are to hone their skills, adjust their technique to suit different conditions and terrain and set up a race orientated environment using Free Lap timers. Basically, I guide these youngsters to become the best rider they can, whether it be racing or just riding and having a blast with friends.

To see these kids tear up the bike park is unbelievable, and to be able to throw around a bike that is half their body weight is quite an effort and a feat in itself! These kids always amaze me how well they can send a jump, let alone hit a corner at warp speed. It’s ridiculous!

photo

The kids are already learning about suspension set up and what works for certain tracks, they’re even onto their tire pressures.

photo

The groms all work really well together, feeding off each other’s ideas and line choices when they're not throwing cliff bars around!

photo

We’d like to thank all the parents for joining our program it’s been a lot of time and organizing around their work schedules.
We’d also like to thank our sponsors that jumped on board.

@WAKIdesigns: Exactly! These kids definitely do not shred harder than me. They're good and its sick! But common PB, I feel like everyone on here has never jumped bigger than 10ft. Some of us have lapped Dirt Merchant/Freight Train/A-line 100 times.

Yes. I fully support the young kinds shredding...but I am sick of these articles saying "They shred harder than you". Yes...I am older now...I have 2 children I need to support and I've dialed it back a bit. No more 40 foot gaps ect. These article titles suck. Even Wade doesn't go big anymore...has kids. I'm looking at you Pinkbike/NSMB. Grow up.

@ADGproductions: all I know is that I have more sex and no math lessons. @universe I am coming to Whistler in no more than 2 years and i want to send everything! That is because everyone on Pinkbike measures how good rider you are if you can send whips on machine dug trails and scrub crabapple bits. If you can do that you can ride. No matter that 16 yr old girls send stuff like that on fricking BMX bikes.

@universe: can't upvote this enough, my thoughts exactly
  • 9 2
@universe: also just goes to show how our sport is truly a rich kids sport too. At that age I would have never been given a $$$$ bike with $$$$ dream lessons. We thought a $30 Walkman was crazy money
  • 4 3
@preach: there is rarely such thing as rich kids. There are rich parents. The only thing that matters is whether they are good parents to their kids.
  • 4 0
@WAKIdesigns: rich parents by logic have rich kids... hence the phrase “the rich get richer”. Most wealthy made their money the old fashioned way.. they inherited it.
  • 3 3
@preach: huh, yeah, but when you are 14 you don’t really go on a Jenson USA shopping spree or look for skills clinics. Dad buys you a bike and signs you for a clinic. Also whybwould you use word “rich” for riding bicycles? What would you assign to kids doing karting? Or Mx? Doing races all over the country? Traveling expenses aside of everything else are quite big. What then? Oligarchs? Skiing - hello?! Then you have nothing left for 16-18yr olds driving Porsches on Nurburgring. Gajilabillionarchs? Honestly, do you really need to be that rich to buy this bike and sign for skills clinics? I see kids like that in fkng Poland and Czech republic. They are not that rich man. That’s not even 5th league of being rich. People on this site have some serious problems considering themselves modest and throwing crap at anyone who has expensive bike. As if they themselves didn’t want 5 bikes in their garage.

@WAKIdesigns: I see you are quite out of touch w what “normal people” money is.
  • 5 0
@preach: eh bro you must not hangout with us rednecks. Live in a trailer, but kids all have their own mx bike and snowmobile and camper trailer. Dad drives an old truck and a new Razor. Priorities lol. Kids with nice bikes isn't only for the rich by any means. Look at how every kid has a damn iPad and phone etc. We don't buy that trash but buy a bike instead. Ends up cheaper in long run.

 @universe: You butt hurt?

While I'm sure the title is true, the terms "___ harder than you" and "___ are better than you" are overused. Beyond that they don't make anyone feel great about things. Great for these kids, but I'll watch a video called "These Kids are Amazing at Biking" and not the above...

 Yup. Well put.

So rad how these kids are riding. Great work Chris and their parents for supporting them.

Nice work @petrifilms, love your interview on the lift.

Kovarik is worth doing lessons with, they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks but he helped me out quite a bit which has made things a LOT more fun Smile

So Chris Kovarik has the best job in the world? I think we can all agree on that.

So stoked to see so many #TLDgroms at Whistler this year, and rad to see Kovarik on the hill, always one of our favorites!

Def like seeing this too. More Grom gear please =). My kid ONLY wears your Sprint Shorts as they are only short in the entire industry for kids that are actually long enough to cover their knee pads a bit. Any more protection stuff we can get the better. Also, do you guys do anything as far as offering some sort of deal for Kids MTB Teams? MTB stuff is a fortune (rightfully so at times) but I know there are kids working hard on our team that could use some love.

And I'm here starting my enduro racing carrer at 30 years of age and don't have the skills these kids have ... Feels bad man.

We were behind this squad of shredders this past closing weekend. Rolled up behind them at the mid point under the lift after riding Upper Whis DH. Watched them drop in and throw style off the Dwayne Johnson step up. Couldn't have been more than 10 years old. Pretty amazing to think what someone's riding can become if they start so young.

Imagine sending it all day , and not having a beer afterwards!!
  • 7 0
I'm old and broken from from doing this for 20+ years. Everybody shreads harder than I do. But thanks for reminding me. ????

I love this video: they start of with some simple slalom drills, sprinting through a berm, then rolling a rock section...I'm thinking, "hey, I can do that!". Then they start sending it like a RedBull highlight reel. Absolutely awesome!!!
  • 6 1
That's what were all going to look like once we're on 36" Enduro bikes of the future
  • 1 0
Lol...dude, this def has to make you wonder right? Its not like they are XC riding there. Then you see guys like Jeff Kendall-Weed riding his 29er Ripmo like a BMX bike.

So many butt-hurt 40 year olds in these comments......

 Kovarik line choice coaching
“Hey kid, see that berm?”
“Yeah!”
“Destroy it!”

What you need Bobby is the right amount of speed to carry into the corner. We'll start with "too fast" and then we can go to "f&#kng mental!" and tomorrow I will introduce you to the concept of "send to flat". Now wave to your daddy. Smile and wave. Hello mr Stevens, how many clicks of LSC today? Oh you need to order a tuning kit for your 36? Fantastic Sir! Do that! Me and Bobby will do some cones practice okay? Ok, Bobby, too fast remember?

 Damn Schlayer rock garden.

I was thinking yeah this is a great little film and watching kids ride mtb's is so rewarding. Then 1:46 time stamp came and my jaw hit the f*cking floor...

  • 3 0
i miss having no fear at that age.

Style so beyond their years! Nice job Kovarik helping mold the next crop of Canadian DH racers and freeriders!!

This is awesome! Watching these little guys rip makes me more pumped to ride! I haven’t been to whistler in 3 years and now I really want to go!!!!!

So rad! It's great to be a kid on a MTB these days.

Those kids are all wayyyy better at jumps than I am
  • 1 0
Off all curiosity, are this kids use flat pedals as well? Agree or not, flat pedal gonna make the learning curve better.
