PRESS RELEASE: Engin Cycles

Many riders have already experienced the benefits of Engin’s dual bolt seat collar that spreads clamping forces evenly and securely, helping to relieve strain on carbon fiber and dropper seat posts, while still holding them firmly in place. Continuing to expand our line of premium, made in the USA, bicycle components, Engin is introducing our newest piece, the 35MM MTB Stem. To match the aesthetic language of the seat collar, the 35MM features an asymmetric design with bold, industrial forms. To match the functionality of the seat collar, the 35MM is expertly machined, featuring a “no gap” style faceplate. The all-new Engin 35MM is a premium component designed to exacting standards for modern mountain bikes, and as always, machined here in Philadelphia, PA.

The 35MM comes in three sizes: 32, 40, and 50 mm, each with 5 mm rise; and four colors: Black, Purple, Lime Green and Matte Brown. Keeping in mind the same principles of secure fit without excessive torque that guided the design of the Engin Seat Collar, the 35MM uses a “no gap” faceplate design. The benefit is twofold: it helps to spread clamping forces evenly around the bar clamp, holding firmly, with less risk of crushing high-end carbon bars; as well as making installation very easy by avoiding the need to tighten bolts in a pattern to maintain an even gap. With a 50 mm wide bar clamp, and a 40 mm stack height, the 35 mm Stem holds on tight and retains massive stiffness, avoiding the vague steering feeling that comes with more flexy stems.

Each stem is produced from domestically sourced 6061 aluminum and machined in house at Engin Cycles World Headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Using 24 different tools across a total of 9 different operations, our stems have been refined over the course of an exhaustive development period where no detail has been left unconsidered. Every threaded hole on the Engin Stem is form tapped to increase strength and longevity over standard cut threads. In order to accommodate the most bars and forks possible, we went through a painstaking process of refining the bore sizes on our clamps to ensure the best possible fit on any bar or fork you could choose to use with our stems. This means you won’t need to resort to over-torquing fasteners to firmly hold your components, which is the main cause of failure for both handlebars and stems. The 35MM has undergone rigorous testing both by our own staff, as well as in the accredited testing facilities of ACT Labs.

Riders want to be able to customize their bike and achieve the look they want, without sacrificing on quality and functionality. With the 35MM available in 4 colors and seat collars being introduced in the two new colors, Lime Green and Matte Brown, a whole range of new options for how to customize your mountain bike have just opened up. The combination of the Engin Cycles Seat Collar and the all-new 35MM yield an unparalleled result in terms of quality and beauty, perfectly suited to modern mountain bikes.

After selling bikes out of his own shop, Wissahickon Cyclery, for 10 years, Drew Guldalian started Engin Cycles in 2005 to make the bikes that he couldn’t get anywhere else. As Engin frames evolved the process grew to include custom frame components machined in-house to solve unique problems. Eventually, this meant developing a seat collar so that the complete Engin bicycles wouldn’t experience the issues of dropper posts binding when clamped too tightly. In 2019 the seat collars became available for purchase to the general public, and have since appeared on various other frame builders’ bikes including 44bikes, Retrotec, and others. The 35MM becomes the second Engin Cycles component to be available for consumers to purchase directly. Future products are under active development, including new sizes of seat collars to fit more bikes.
