Jake Paddon comes from quick bloodlines. His cousin Hayden Paddon is at the top of the world rally circuit and Jake shares his need for speed. He is no household name but is an up and comer on the enduro scene to watch out for. He has just qualified for the 2018 EWS series and is ready to deal to the world like he has been on his local trails.

Although competitive in the local NZ scene Jake travelled to Europe in 2017 to Push himself in the European Enduro races.

bigquotesThe level of riding in Europe is high, much much higher than New Zealand and with that I have learnt masses and learnt it quickly. I went there fitter, faster and stronger than previous years and left in an even better position.

Jake competed in 5 out 8 EWS rounds, Learning a huge amount in the process.

bigquotesWith some struggles in the European rounds my overall results weren’t there, but when it all came together, the speed was there and I was exactly where I had aimed for.

One convenient thing about living in the southern hemisphere is having all summer to train before the EWS kicks off in Lo Barnechea in March.

bigquotesI'm looking forward to taking what I have learnt from racing in Europe last year and heading to Chile not so much faster, but smarter and more consistent.

Weapon of choice, 2018 Yeti SB6c.

Absolute black oval chain ring
Jake has gone for a few custom additions, an Extreme Racing Shox Storia coil takes care of the rear end. An oval chainring by absoluteBLACK has drawn a few comments, Jake tells me they're worth a go – he loves it. I guess they have moved on from the biopace days.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out so far.

He looks fast to 70% of us, 20% more of us are dreaming 5% can keep up 5% don't even read PB

@enduroelite: And some of us wonder if rockless trails really exist
(as I stare intently at the one rock dislodged in the whole vid)
  • 5 0
@Orangesicle: nope they don't exist, it's a conspiracy made up by those not living in the southwest. Just like the moon landing, all fake Wink I've read about this "dirt" stuff but frankly I believe it's all photoshop and screen magic.

I'm going to make a raw edit of myself. It'll be mostly me cursing, going slow, and slamming into stuff.

Pretty sure we could all nail the first few seconds of this video in a raw edit.

What's with all of the pros riding without some kind of eye protection? Am I the only person out there that get bugs, pebbles, branches, leaves, etc, pinging off my lenses??
  • 5 0
seriously! if I'm without eye protection for 3 min into a ride I'm picking shit out of eyes. dust, bugs, rocks, babies, you name it!

Agreed, riding Lenses are much better than being blind.

Dear Matt...modern oval chain rings are nothing like Bio-pace. Interesting comment given the fact I do not think you were riding bikes that had them before they vanished. Just sayin'
  • 7 0
Please tell me you managed to pick up on the tongue-in-cheek nature of the comment and see the sheer levels of smart-arsedness in it?
  • 3 0
Yes I am well aware that modern oval chainrings differ from Bio-pace. Also when I was a child in the 90's my parents bought me a 2nd hand mountain bike with a bio-pace crankset. So believe it or not I did spend a fair bit of time on bio-pace. Yea I was too young to ride it in 93 when they stoped manufacture, but they didn't just vanish.

@TheBeard: Us Americans aren't good at subtlety, sarcasm, smart-arsedness, or really any part of kiwi humor.
