This week the MTBNZ National DH series heads to the southern coastal city of Dunedin, where unseasonal (but not unsurprising for Dunedin) weather turned the difficulty up to 11.
If there's a DH nationals round in Dunedin, you can pretty much guarantee that it's going to rain for the week beforehand. Because nothing says Signal hill racing like "I can chose tyres for the rocks at the top, and have no traction in the clay at the bottom. Or tyres for the clay, and fall on rocks instead. Which one will hurt more?"
Oh well, it’s impossible to please everyone when it comes to dishing out free content. The joy of modern technology is you can just play any song you like from your own playlist while watching. Or is there a list online somewhere i can find with the music you prefer?
@roberthavill: Lol, im leaving this post here before anymore fairy's get hurt. If you love MTBing enough to be on pinkbike its kinda odd to want to hear music blasted over the bike/crowd sounds. All that is needed is the music volume turned down to be "background"
also, who are you robert? Come see me at lourdes on setup day, Ill happily tell you all about me and my "no idea"
@noideamtber: Prahaps it’s because i grew up in the era of mtb films Including New World Disorder, Kranked, Earthed etc, and punk/metal soundtracks were all the rage then. I’ll try remember next time I volunteer my weekend to shoot and edit this FREE content that music is subjective, and not everyone liked early 2000’s MTB films. But to be honest i wont remember or care, if you don’t like it, either scroll on past or come create your own content.
@woody-nz: I dont care for the other guy but as someone who does Visual/audio as a job... he has a point. While I thank you for your time to make this stuff, if you're going to post something public you need to be prepared for feedback whether its good or bad and its 100% up to you how you react to it and honestly I think you reacted in a negative way, content creators dont reply trying to half-ass defend themselves - they take in all the feedback and try cater for everyone "usually"
In this case I would look at his(?) original comment and base my thought process on the up/down votes that got as gives a broader image.
@mtbtrekracer: Fair point, maybe i’m approaching the pinkbike comments section from the wrong angle, i always felt it was a free to heckle and free to heckle back kind of environment, just keep it civilised. You work in the visual audio field, thats cool, you must have access to some rad sound equipment, unfortunately i don't. I shot this on my stills camera, and although the video quality has come along way in these hybrid cameras, the inbuilt audio is obviously not up to cinema standard. The reason i cut most of the audio back is because it was quite windy on the day so there was allot of wind noise through the inbuilt mic, it was impractical to use an external mic as it was pissing down and i was trying to keep my camera tucked under my jacket when I could. Combined with the wind, there is also the sound of my stills focused lenses autofocus motors purring away, So in general some unappealing raw audio. So easy way to fix it, slap a song over it and give the race fans some content. So as the old saying goes “you get what you payed for” and as neither i get paid neither does anyone pay to watch we all have to deal with compromise.
@woody-nz: I can't believe you're still having to defend this. You made a video that is free to watch, without getting paid for it, that shows some really good racing with clear footage despite tough conditions. As it happens I enjoyed the video but even if I didn't I can't imagine on which planet my first instinct would be to get straight in the comments and give you shit.
The internet is shit sometimes. Thanks for the great video.
Your videoing the racing/fans so why cant we hear them?
this is like going to a Sports game and having headphones in listening to music

Why you have to justify yourself like this is a mystery that only the modern petulant world can explain...
