@geerumm: Racers put their equipment on the line, promoters risk losing their home and savings if somebody gets life-flighted out. If there was timing equipment, that's going to be $5-10k...or more. I used to make $800-$1200 for a two day weekend of announcing at crits and cross races. Licensing, insurance, course materials, food/beer for volunteers, venue fees....it adds up quick.
