Trail Side Perk! Side Burner!

The Side Burner is a prolific hot burning little Alcohol stove, weighing in at only 9 grams. Its easy to construct and does not need a pot stand. However, it does need to be primed and most important a flat stable surface to balance the pot on the stove. All in all one of my favorite trails side stoves.

Yes, dude Please Give it a try! I dont sell these, I just make them and use them when out on the trial. We usually do long 6-8 hour rides every weekend so, having a hot lunch is very refreshing. They are very fun to make!

I will, when i am finished with the work on the bikes.. I have seen 3 of your movies about burners..
I am about as far as 2 cut off cans (33ml) wich are slided into eachother. and i think i saw another smaller can (25ml) inside the top burner??

Yes, its made of two bottoms of small redbull size cans, then there is an inner wall that you make from the wall of any can.

The holes are spaced 10mm apart and my drill size is 1.2mm

This site has tons of info on making some rad stoves!

Really Dave?
That would be kind of cool in a really weird way!
Maybe a tad nerve racking!

Thank you very much!
Im happy to do these kind of videos too if people continue to like them.
On YouTube is quite popular just its not connected to biking.
I want to connect the two!

Mate、seriously, you know how everyone here secretly fears "the big one", me included, and your stealth stoves would make a great feature on a current affairs show!! I'm sure, if you want to, you could get a slot on "世界で一番受けたい授業” to show people what you can do with an empty Ally Can, some simple tools and a willingness to try something yourself instead of throw money at the problem down the DIY store..

I'll be your manager!!!!

Look out Japan, the stealth stoves are a-comin!

 Thank you Very much Dave!

I need a personal manager to keep my affairs in proper order.

Seriously, I started getting into things like this and natural survival after 3/11.

This kind of system is just one simple way to keep yourself and other safe in a tight emergency.
You just have to stock some Alcohol.
It will actually burn on any flammable fuel, just alcohol is the only that is odorless, has not soot and will burns very clean so you can use it inside.

Once you have taught yourself how to make a couple of designs your imagination starts to wander.
If an emergency were to occur, I can build a little burner that will Boil any contaminates out of the water in just minutes.

Did you find Alcohol?

 Cheers Niko、

My local DIY places don't have any but I did find an online store with it:
www.tonya.co.jp/shop/g/g35705
This stuff will do the trick, as you say odorless and you can use it inside...
Your stealth stoves are a lot cheaper than the coffee syphons too... that website has them at 10,000 each !!!!

BTW mate, what size drill bit did you use for the holes?
Have you tried different sizes to adjust the flame?
  • + 1
Yes, I have made hundreds of stoves as prototypes. This stove has 1.2mm jet holes spaced 10mm apart. So, smaller jet holes 0.8 will burn longer but boil a tad slower. The biggest tip is if the flame is overflowing the pot your holes are too big and your losing heat. You want the flame to stay under the pot which is why I prefer the top burner more than the side burner as the flame stays under the pot very well. If you noticed in this video the jets are a bit too strong as Im losing a little heat. Maybe 1.0mm jets would have been better, but for a bigger pot or pan this would rock! Im going to check out your link. Thank you!

Thats a good price! I pay 309yen usually for 500ml! Good shopping mate! The alcohol burner is good but its really slow burning to boil water! Im going to have to check out that site in more detail, thank you Dave!

can you use 99% isopropyl alchohol?
  • + 1
Sorry 99% and also 70% isopropyl contains something that soots the pots.
You can use it but your pot will be sooted like crazy.

However there is one company that makes an alcohol stove that can use isopropyl alcohol.
This is the site, flat cat gear!

www.flatcatgear.com

Then their stove named the ISO clean stove will burn isopropyl alcohol.

In Canada you need to look for Denatured Alcohol or Methylated spirits.

This blog says some good things.

blog.bigsnit.com/2010/05/01/finding-denatured-alcohol-in-canada

Does that help buddy?
  • + 1
Yeah, I'll try to track down some denatured alchohol. Thanks!
