"Shimano have gone back to the drawing board and made significant steps forward with the new Deore XT hydraulic disc brake system by incorporating a number of their established technologies into a totally re-designed caliper and lever housing.

The main focus during the development of these brakes was to reduce heat buildup, which is the limiting factor in brake performance over extended periods, to this end the M785 forged aluminium caliper uses an opposed 2 piston design (with oversized 22mm ceramic pistons which prevent heat transfer into the fluid) to provide excellent modulation, reduce leading effect and extend pad longevity. In addition they are designed to be used with Shimano's Ice-Tec rotors which have a sandwich steel / aluminium construction to help dissipate the high temperatures generated when using smaller cross country rotors in a race situation, preventing brake fade lap after lap.
