I had dreads a while back, they were pretty sweet but I got rid of them after 2 months(which I still regret doing). What I did was get someone to grab a bunch of hair and comb backward(towards your head)which knots the hair. I went through 2 or 3 combs doing this. Ummm...I should probly mention that this methods takes a loooong time(I can't remember but it was either 5 or 8 hours) and hurts...a lot. To maintain them I would rub/roll beeswax into them (not sure where you would find it, I had to get some from another city, If you live in a place with good cultural diversity you shouldnt have a problem). I found that sleeping became very uncomfortable, for the first few days my hair stuck traight out and after that your face and pillow are all waxy in the morning. Your gonna want to have long hair, the longer the better. If you know someone who's a hairdresser/stylist try to get them to do it for you, maybe pay them. If you get them proffesionaly done they can end up costing around 300 bucks depending on length and what not (no joke).

If you really want them, go for it! Its deffinately worth it. I've missed mine since i got them out, I've tried braiding my hair but it doesnt even come close.

what my buddy did was took a "clump" of hair in his hands and rubbed it back and forth like a stick trying to start a fire.

I looked up wannabee in the dictionary and it said "someone who has dreadlocks professionaly done."

It's not a look, it represents a lifestyle.

i was thinking about it for a long time
one of the things which prevented me from getting it is going to a tiny little private school where girls who are exactly like the chicks from 'mean girls' for some reason run the show
now before you all jump on my back about this, in a small school with crazy girls getting away from that crap is unavoidable
so i cut my hair back from 12 inches to just above shoulder length this Sunday

i might get dreads next year, when i don't have to deal with that. (graduated)

and to reply to what was said above (if i understood it correctly you said dreads are only fulfilling a lifestyle, not just a style?)

not really, dreads can really go with anyone, and your just stereotyping people into specific roles in society if you group them by a hairstyle
