Sparknotes version: Be at the Lafayette library at 7pm on jan. 25th(tuesday)and help get the location of the bike park passed. its in a sick location and if it doesnt get passed here it might not happen at all.

Long version:

We NEED people to come to the city meeting on Tuesday night at 7pm at the new Lafayette Lirbrary.

This meeting will be on the location of the bike park. At the last meeting we meet our first opposition and there will be more at this meeting. We would like to have as many people there as possible and would like anyone from Lafayette to come and say something in favor of this location.

here is a update straight from Hillride:

Given the significant number of local bike enthusiasts who support this project, the PTR Commission recently passed a motion to recommend adding $100,000 to the Bike Park Project and to have LSA & Associates, an environmental consulting firm, proceed with the permitting process.

Recognizing there has been some recent opposition to the proposed location of this project, the Commission also wishes to obtain City Council support for moving ahead with this project.

You are encouraged to attend the upcoming City Council meeting on Monday January 25th, where the Council will decide whether to approve moving forward with the permitting process and the construction of a bike park in the south-end of Lafayette Community Park. Below is additional project background and current project status.

City Council Meeting:
Monday, January 25, 2010
7pm - The Lafayette Bike Park is first on the agenda
Community Room at the new Library
3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

Project Background
The City Council approved the design and environmental study of a Bike Park within the south end of the Lafayette Community Park.

During the project’s initial study, it was discovered that in 1994, a documented sighting occurred in Las Trampas Creek of a California Red-Legged Frog. Consequently, the project consultant informed the PT&R Commission that special permits and additional studies would be required in order for the project to proceed.

For several years, local youths have been building unauthorized bike jumps along Las Trampas Creek and other environmentally sensitive areas in the Community Park. Following a request for a bike park from an organized group of local bike enthusiasts, the PTR Director and PTR Commission thought it was important to address this environmental harm and simultaneously enhance the recreation opportunities in the park by providing an area for bike riders to enjoy their sport in a clearly designated area within the Community Park.

The area being considered is within the south end of the Community Park. The PTR Commission and staff believe this is the most suitable location for the following reasons:
The Community Park is the only city-owned property that has the space and supporting facilities for this type of use, i.e. emergency access, restrooms, parking.
A significant number of youths who participate in this sport live near or adjacent to the park, and the Park’s proximity to the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail provides bike access to the site.
The south end area was designated for active use in the 1988 adopted Community Park Master Plan. Conversely, the north end and central sections of the park are designated to remain in a more natural state.

Current Status
The bike park preliminary design is undergoing rigorous environmental review. Thorough environmental analysis is required to ensure the effects of the bike park will be properly mitigated and special plant and wildlife species are protected. As part of this process, appropriate permits will need to be obtained through the Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Game.

The PTR Director, representatives from Hilride Progression Development Group, representatives from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the biologist who made the 1994 red-legged frog sighting near the proposed project will be meeting to discuss the permitting process and the involvement of the US Army Corps of Engineers, the entity with jurisdiction over the creek banks, in order to pursue drainage outfall improvements as part of the project. These improvements would shore up the banks around the drainage outfall to address existing erosion, thereby stabilizing and improving the creek environment.

A biological survey is scheduled to be conducted in early spring in order to adequately catalog any special plant and wildlife species that could be affected.

Anybody seen the www.nolafayettebikepark.com website. Full of your usual negativity and unfounded claims, plus plenty of sudden red-legged frog love. However, one thing it does contain is a compilation of cleverly selected quotes from us riders. Taken out of context, of course, they make the pro-bike park contingent out to be a bunch of illiterate, foul-mouthed, future convicts that aim to destroy the lovely suburban utopia that Lafayette enjoys.
Now... I'll admit I definitely let loose a handful of inappropriate comments upon viewing the site, but the idea is that we want to give them less ammo towards us, not more. Just a reminder, try to be professional when addressing the city council, the press or any other source. We can make this thing a reality, but opponents such as this one need to be silenced with calm, collected statements of fact, not threats and f-bombs. copy that?
That being said, let's rally and get this thing BUILT! keep those letters coming, keep the meetings full, get your shovels ready!
