Want a reliable chain guide, but don’t have the money for one? Well here’s your answer! Set yourself up a welfare chain guide.

What you need.

-3 Zipties

-1 Roller

Set up.

1) Get yourself 3 zipties and one roller (Available through your local bike shop for about $10, or try and find one that someone’s not using off an old chain guide and use that one)

2) Shift your rear cassette into the granny gear. And your front chainring into the biggest ring.

3) Put one ziptie through the roller, and up around the chain and chainstay, pull the tie tight until there is only about 1 cm from the chainstay. Place this around 2 inches from the back of the chainring.

4) Tie the other two zipties crosswise around the first ziptie and the chainstay to assure that the roller will not move around. Make sure to snug these zipties down as tight as possible.

5) Cut off all ends of zipties, and ensure you have enough chain links for your shifting to work properly. If you need a few more links, your local bike shop will always have extra links around if you ask nice enough.

The end result

I have been running this setup for 3 months now, and have never had a single problem. I find it works best combined with the Dual rock ring setup as seen here. I have never dropped a chain while I’ve had this combination setup. The total cost for the setup should cost between free-$15, and the only part that really costs any money is the roller.
