Generations of riders have cut their teeth on the track, including Michael Hannah who set the long standing record for the most runs in one day (70) and went on to becoming a world class downhill competitor. The story follows Ryhlee Herd, an indigenous teen who has grown up in Kuranda and from the age of 12 started riding the Kuranda Downhill track. Rhylee makes a special pilgrimage along the paths of his ancestors through traditional Djuabugandji land where he meets Ben Bramham, who was an instrumental figure in shaping downhill mountain biking in Cairns and the world when they re-opened the Kuranda Track in the late 80’s and started racing on the track in 1991.

Cairns has some pretty epic mountain ranges.

Shuttle Rewind pays homage to the traditional owners of the land as well the pioneers of mountain biking and the many waves of riders who have ridden the track for the last 2 Decades. The boom box painting and reference through the film pays respects to the crew who created the legendary Mudcows series, planting the Cairns downhill mountain culture into the psyche of riders around the world.

A word from the director, Landon Stroud:
As a born and bred cairns local who grew up riding the Kuranda Downhill track, I relished the opportunity to make this film as it is very close to my heart. The Kuranda Downhill track has spawned hundreds, even thousands of stories from riders all around the world. This film represents just a few of these stories. The history and culture of downhill mountain biking in Cairns needs to be documented and preserved and looking forward we need to make sure generations to come have the chance to make their own stories on the Kuranda Downhill track.

After curating the Cairns Adventure Film Festival, and judging the entries, the films which stood out the most and which tended to get people talking were the films with emotive story lines.

While many many years ago his ancestors would have forged the path on foot, these days climbing the mighty Kuranda range can be done in alot less comfort.

The acclaimed 'Oldest DH train in Australia'. One of the funnest too, all with an epic view directly out to the Great Barrier Reef to boot.

I truly believe that if we want to sell Cairns and the Tropical North Queensland as a downhill mountain bike destination we need to focus on the rich culture (scene) we have. I think that telling great stories will pique the interest in riders from around the world ad be more likely an influential factor in their decision as to where their next MTB destination trio will take them.

The locations, cane fields, old can barracks, barron river, Kuranda Rail, Barron Gorge have all been carefully chosen to truly give the film a heritage value and genuine Queenslander aesthetic. By choosing such iconic locations, we have tried to subtly promote the regions natural assets. Shuttle Rewind represents everyone who has been a part of this culture in Cairns for the last 25 years.”

Those familiar with the legendary 'MudCows' movement will dig the artwork and style that goes along with Shuttle Rewind, a true calling to the past era of MTB in this region.

No feature in the landscape was left un turned, often meaning hauling uber expensive camera gear precariously up, down or around the mountain's ragged edges.

Living in region 18 years ago and still having friends who relocated from SA to the beaches there, this video really hit the spot. Looking forward to taking my family and young shredders there to really let them appreciate a special place in the world. Thanks for sharing.

Is there any information or dose anyone know where this and more DH trails are located in the cairns region. I went up to cairns for the world cup, took my DH bike and could only find information on the Smithfield trails. Those trails are good but I am highly allergic to peddling, every time i do it i break out in a sweat. So i try to keep it to a minimum.

@Gronzdog, you may not find a great wealth of information on the large selection of DH trails in the region as they are still mostly un-classified and as such will not appear on any trail maps you find (on RideCairns for example!!). The exception of course being Kuranda which had recently been opened and classified as a legitimate recreational DH trail!!! The region is fast turning around and fully backing MTB after the success of the World-Cup, and of course with another (and a World-Champs!!) on the way, hopefully soon we will be able to fully show off the whole suite of DH trails along with the already marked all-mountain / XC trails and parks!! Because believe me when i say (and the locals will back me up..) that what is not on the trail maps... will blow you away!!

Incidentally, you might like to look at facebook.com/cairnsmtb and ask for info on what you are after Wink

Awesome! growing up as a kid in Cairns I remember pushing my ridged old Apollo up Kuranda dropping the saddle at the top and having a blast all the way back down. 22 years on and riding down Kuranda is still one of my favorite things to do.

Brilliant video and +1 it shows of the culture great, everyone is so chilled and comes together to enjoy riding and what we have in common not what separates us. Great work, would love to see this sort of thing make it to mainstream media. Keep it up.

Have been up to cairns a few times and have fell in love with the place. The last time I went up was for the World Cup and the first time I have brought my bike up with me. Did three ride days down Kuranda and have to say it was the most beautiful dh track and environment I have ever rode. From seeing a Kasowari with it's off spring on the way up, to unloading the bikes with a view of the great barrier then to ripping down through a rain forest it definitely left a lasting impression. Bumping into all the who's who of dh as well was just the icing on the cake. Can't wait to get back out there, I love everything about that place.

Great piece of work here, great to see some of the Iconic Original's in this and to see Jacobs back on the brush's, makes me miss the NQ Scene even more. I remember Mick Hannah when he first hit the scene up there, along with his 70 runs at Kuranda he also spent a day or so bombing runs on the old Mount Louisa DH course leading up to the State round there in 2000 (I think), I remember watching him sections like know one else had, then his old man would drive him back to the top, all while a young Tracey watched on, I learnt a heap from 'that Kid' that day, none of us from Townsville had heard of him till that weekend, amazing how times change!
