What happened to Ti? BTW what's the head angle on that green rocket to the right
  • 1 0
Ti got superseded. I'm in the mood for experimenting.
Will check out the green rocket HA when back home Wink

What's the material on Salsa? Some fancy steel I assume Smile
  • 2 0
Probably just an ordinary CR-MO steel with some funky name: 'Custom-designed, triple-butted, seamless Sanko CroMoly Kung Fu tubing' Smile

I've been on HT yesterday... the first time on stiff wheels since few years. I can tell anyone lusting after those around 400g rims, you are robbing yourselves from fun. Good for racing, but for everyday? Doooooount! I have 670g (in total) Mavics d3.1 rims coped with lightweight tyres and the bike goes like a monster - so much confidence!

Mine current EQ27 is around 520g - that is what I call an 'everyday rim'. Can race with light tyres or do AM no problem.
Mavic D3.1 !?!? - dude, that's overkill! Confidence - yes, efficiency - no.

overkill? not if used as tubeless...
EQ27 + average 150g tube + 12mm alu nipples = 700g.
D.3.1 + eyelets + 14mm DT brass nipples = 700g / + 100g sealant = 800g

100g over the top - I can live with that considering how good mavic ust rims are for holding the tyre bead in place and how much strength I gain + that they are 30mm wide giving awesome support for the tyre in corners. I built it as for a lifetime wheelset for HT Smile I hate flats I just hate flat tyres...

I just switched over from XC717 - for f*cks sake, there is no cornering on that thing Big Grin Even my 28mm wide XT rims don't provide such good support for thin tyres.

Well I agree, it's a great 'lifetime' but not 'everyday' wheelset Smile
What is your overall experience with tubeless? Is it worth the hassle, money and those few grams less?
  • 1 0
It's just worth less flats... it's just worth less thinking - oh not those stones, I'm gonna flat, ouch, did I flat did I flat. Sure it does not save you from being careful, but it makes you walk home very very rarely. At least I have a very bad record and my trails are very rocky.

Downsides
- Not every rim can be converted - it has to be a tight rim (like ZTRs) it actualy works best with a proper UST rim
- UST tyres are heavy, I prefer UST ready tyres, but they require a compressor to inflate

Going ghetto ust for both non ust rim and compeltely not ust tyre is a bullshit. It just does not work as it should - you will loose air in whatever corner and on rocks

as simple as WAKI wrote, but with some benefits - better traction running tubeless and you can ride on less pressure than regular tube+tire setup without snake bites and such. I just got a bargain racing ralph 2.25 and wondered if it can be run tubeless but it's wired so I recon it won't work as my current tires are foldable. Worth a try but what if on a 60km offroad trip I'll get my grip on a air pump more than on my grips? Maybe not worth 59ml of spilled sealant Big Grin What do you think?

Oh and nice Salsa you have there Smile

Tubeless makes some trouble when running really light tyres (pretty much everything under 700g) and trying to ride hard with them. Getting stupid light tyres like RRalph, RRon, Supersonic Contis gives a big warning sign. You need either a stable side wall or a wide and tight rim (preferably both) if you are starting getting an idea about putting power down in corners (pumptrack) or working the bike in rock gardens to make it fly over stuff, or going foot out flat out at higher speeds. You will just take the tyre off the rim bead and while it's not that problematic with tube, it does make you loose air in tubeless.

Great thing but it is important to know the limitations - I started with HRollers UST, worked awesome, then tried NNics. Then RRon. In the mean time I discovered pumptrack riding and my skills went up, did a training program, got stronger - got myself a dropper post so gt even faster on all downhills on my XC Trails. Nobby Nics just got out of their depth on that bike very fast. I have Minions EXO now, and works great again (HRs had to go, they don't work on uphills on my trails). Nobby Nic /rocket Ron combo works well on d3.1 rims on a fun hardtail but with pressures respectively at: 2,1bar / 2,3bar. That works for now but only because HT rides slower than Nomad - I am soon getting MKing II / Xking in 2.4" protection. Schwalbies go back to "wife bike"

I assume UST is the must go for XC / Marathon racing where straight riding speed matters way more than cornering characteristics. For fun riding it is debatable but I enjoy it. For the kind of riding I do, a combo of NN / RR on racing rims like Mavic XC717 is no can do how!

in my case the tubeless thing concerns only a xc type of riding. I'm not the lightest and flimsiest guy on tubeless wheels and I like to ride with low pressure, 1.8 to 2.1 max. That bothers me because maybe I put too much stress on my wheelset and tires on that low pressure with my weight. It gives me some hard times on long climbs but it does add some points to my comfort scale plus the cro-mo freameset naturally. It made me wonder at first how the tires bend while cornering and some root/rocky sections, I've mistaken it with low frame stiffness which indeed isn't that bad in singular. I try to hit some hard sections (if they are ridable at some fun speed level on a rigid bike) and no issues for now. I looked down on my rear mountain king while riding the other day some rooty section and what a glimpse - the tire without tube works much more vertically and horizontally than a tubed one. More vibration and obstacles absorbing capabilities. Huge difference. So far so good, only that I have to check the pressure very often as I don't ride every day what makes me come to conclusion that a tubeless set with a no tubes kind'a kit isn't good for people riding very occasionally. I just loose some air on a daily basis, maybe because of that the tires were ridden tubed earlier and the do have many tiny holes on sidewalls. For my enduro freeride bikes I'll stay with tubes for now.
