Last night racers hit the trails for Race 6 of the Phat Wednesday Series presented by Kokanee. The most challenging course of the series thus far still had a strong field with 200 racers making the start line . The course started on Schleyer with racers being faced with numerous drops and rock gardens, before dropping into Lower Whistler Downhill, off the fade away and cutting right into Detroit Rock City.
The black glow of rubber on this rock face is good indication of the sharp left at the bottom before a tangled off camber root section.
Jack Iles took the win in the open male category and fastest time of the day with a time of 2:23.50. Only two seconds back, Denis Courchesne and Remy Metailler rounded out the podium. Claire Buchar, was away this week leaving the top spot on the podium open for the first time this season. Katrina Strand took advantage and claimed fasted female in a very tight battle with Sarah Leishman who was only 14/100ths of a second behind.
Dale Ireland making this rock face on Detroit Rock City look easy.
Finn Iles showed he’s not too far behind his older brother, taking the win in the Junior male with a time of 2:31.37, which would have put him in the top 10 in open male. Georgia Astle had a convincing win in the Junior Female which also would have put her in the top 10 in open female.
In master male, Steve Storey claimed back to back victory, with Ryan West and Shane Gayton taking 2nd and 3rd.
We race again next week, July 9th for race 7 of the series. Course will be announced Tuesday at 4:00pm on the big sign board at the bottom of the park and on the facebook group
