This is a 2007 Jamis XAM 19" frame. The first model year, and the only year that they were made this way. The main differences between this and the later ones are, slacker head angle, lower bottom bracket, shorter travel (135mm vs. 150mm) and not as heavy. The geometry numbers in the Jamis catalog are pretty inaccurate. As measured, the head angle is 67.5 deg (w/140mm fork), seat tube 73 deg, BB height with 2.35 tires was 13.3"/338mm, 17"/432mm chain stays, top tube 23.2"/590mm, seat tube length is 19"/482mm.
Let's see....it has 135mm rear travel and will work good with a fork that has anywhere from 130mm to 150mm travel, but 140mm is optimal. It has a 44mm 1-1/8" headtube so it will work with a straight 1-1/8" steerer or a tapered steerer with an external lower cup. It takes a 30.9 seatpost. Rear dropout will take a regular QR hub or a 10 x 135 thru axle hub if you use a bolt on axle or a DT Swiss RWS skewer. Comes with a good FSA headset, a Salsa QR seatpost collar, an extra derailleur hanger, and a service/seal kit for the shock. The Maverick dropper post in the photos needs an overhaul, but it works and I'll throw it in too.
I rode it in 2008/2009 and left it mostly parked in 2010 while I rode my single speed and my cross bike. I wanted to start riding something with suspension again in 2011, and I thought about getting a new bike, but I liked this one so much I decided to keep it and freshen it up instead. I checked it thoroughly for cracks/damage (none, other than the cable rub shown in the photos), installed all new pivot bearings (it has a brand new seat stay because I messed up the upper bearing pocket using the wrong bearing puller like a dumbass), and bought a new Monarch Plus RC3 for it. I got 1 ride on it (the new shock was awesome) before I got sick and now I can't ride anymore. I've hung onto it for so long hoping I would be able to ride again at some point, but that don't look like it's going to happen so there's not much sense in keeping it.
I know the top tube seems short compared to all the bikes coming out now, but for example I'm 5'9" with a long torso and arms (like some one 5''11") and I ran it with 720mm bars (hey, that was wide for back then) and a 60mm stem and it fit really good. I had planned on going to go a 750mm bar with a 50mm stem before I got sick. It was already a pretty stiff bike (stiffer than the 2003 Santa Cruz Heckler it replaced, that's for sure) but I made a small brace that goes between the rockers and it seems to have made it slightly stiffer still.
I know some Jamis have a reputation for broken chain stays, but this clearly is not one of the bad ones. Between the extremely rocky local trails here in San Luis Obispo, 12 days riding at Mammoth, and a week in Downieville doing multiple shuttles and racing the All-Mountain race, it's safe to say if it were one of the bad ones it would have never stood up to all that.
I don't know how much it weighs (truthfully, it aint light) but as shown in the photo as I had it built up, it was right at 32 lbs. That was with heavy DH pedals, 850+ gram wire bead tires, dropper post, 500 gram rims, a 2x with bash guard and chain tensioner, and the stock DHX Air which is 60-70 grams heavier than the Monarch Plus on there now. A smart build should put you around 29-30 lbs pretty easily. So I guess that's it. I realize it's not a "cool" bike that everyone lusts after, but it's like that ugly mutt dog you find on the side of the road that turns out to be awesome. Price of $325 is firm.
