It's no secret that wide bodied and platform pedals give more control. Simply look at the DH segment for proof. When absolute stability is needed, DH riders use platform pedals or pedals with a clip and platform. Shimano recognized that not everyone wants a super lightweight clipless pedal. For some control and stability is more important.

Enter the Shimano PD-M985 XTR Trail Pedals. The pedaling platform of the XTR Race pedals is already wider than any other non-platform clipless pedal on the market. With the XTR Trail pedal, Shimano goes to bat against the platform clipless pedal market and does so in excellent fashion. Unlike other platform/clipless pedals, the platorm and cage of the XTR Trail pedal isn't an after-thought, but the center piece. Without being a full platform, the XTR Trail has more pedal/shoe contact area for absolute control. The shoe is supported across the middle, sides, and behind the clip. The front of the cage cambers down for easy entry back into the clip.

Just like the XTR Race, the Trail uses the new wide body design with oval axle body for wider bearing placement and increased mud-shedding. The widely spaced bearings make the pedal stiffer, more durable, and increase stability. The body is made from a forged piece of alloy and stainless steel fulfills the roll of axle, wings and clips, springs and bolts material. The resulting XTR Trail pedal will most likely convert those who have normal Shimano pedals, it's just that much more stable.
